Calif. Roundup-June 25 - Plant trades

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Arrange your trades here! This thread is for people who plan to attend the Calif. Roundup on June 25th at Drdons home in Temecuala.
While most of us will bring more than what's here, threads like this will help us all decide what to toss in our vehicles before we get on the road. .

For those of you who haven't done this already, just start your own post in this thread and keep up with your items to swap in that one post. You can go back and change your lists of things that you will have to swap and things that others have promised you whenever you make a deal with someone.

If I show Don's list of salvias to my hummers, they will be salivating all over the patio. Please put me down for at least a costa rica blue. The "boys club" in my front yard will be ecstatic. They spurn all feeders in favor of mexican sage.

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

You've got a deal frogsrus.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

The hummers are doing the happy dance lol! I just removed the giant blue shrimp plant and I am currently in the dog house. I guess I had best get my list up.
Janice

Donna, Caryopteris sounds like I am bringing you a dinosaur lol.

hiya SoCal,

Very interested in your Adiantums. Are they a cold hardy variety? And the big question, is there anything on my list or anything you've seen in my gardens that you'd like to trade for some?

I've got some Cassias is you're interested. Cassia javanica, C. fistula, C. reticulata. All well rooted seedlings. Also have Phlomis fruiticosa (Jerusalem sage) if your interested in rooted cuttings.

Can also root Justicia or Pachystachys for you.

Does my desperation show too much? :-P
Best,
Don

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

Naien do not worry. Many of us would be very happy to leave with far fewer plants than we arrive with. I was smiling. The first time I planted red sunflowers, my DH thought I had stuck fake flowers in the garden. They look "wrong" to him.

Now lets see. And just where exactly would I put a pumpkin Lol.

Edited cause my fingers and the keys do not seem to be in sync today

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

I just figured something out. . .duh!!! When I went in to edit my plant list, I could edit out the

'This message was edited on May 31 at 5:28PM'

etc. messages from my previous edits leaving only the current one when you hit send.

Takes me awhile sometimes. . . . ;-Janet
(Might save some space in these long posts too! as I can imagine by 6/25, could get rather long. What fun we're having!! ;-)))

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

dovey, a ginger for me please. Thanks frogs

Don, how much water does the cassia need? Can I put it in the ground here? I have been clearing out and ammending a new home for salvias. The resident hummers are much interested. Did you know that they swipe bugs from spiderwebs? Caught one at it today. No camera in my back pcket-just clippers.

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

hiya frogsrus,

That would be a fabulous photograph, a hummer stealing from a spider. In some countries spiders actually catch birds in their webs. Now there's a sight.

I would say that in your zone you can certainly plant C. reticulata in the ground. C. fistula is a minor gamble and C. javanica is for pots and for winter protection unless you've got a warm spot close to a dryer vent that runs all night with sun for 12hrs a day...lol. C. javanica is one of my favorite plants. I had it in Cardiff and planted it at our place in Laguna Beach, but it only grew on the south side of a building with black mulch during the winter to absorb heat. Our air temps don't bother it as much as our soil temps.

C. reticulata has marvellously deep flowers that hummers do flips for. But few plants even come close to Salvias for hummer activity as you know.

Hope your saving frogs...ours are getting more and more elusive....lol. They've moved from the back garden fountain to the new rose garden where they can hide better.....bloody amphibian Houdinis.

I'll reserve you some Cassias if you'd like and whichever Salvias you fancy.

best,
Don

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

Frogs
I have you down for Kalihi Ginger, it smells wonderful
Dove

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

Dovey,

I'm saving a Wisteria sinensis for you. This one is already acclimated.

Don

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Don, should I have Fiona catch you a bucketful of frogs before we head your way. No diminished population here. We can hardly watch tv for the ribbiting going on outside. The tadpoles seem to find brug roots to be fine dining.

Well I have the dryer vent but am a little lacking in the sunshine in winter so reticulata it is. Any and all salvias are greatly appreciated. I am getting rid of the lawns so have a fair area to turn into vegetable delight and hummer haven. I will warn the hummers about that bird eating spider but they are so spoiled that they do not travel far from home. Removal of the mexican sage would probably cause a revolt lol. I was much cussed for removing the poor sad tired blue shrimp plants. I tried to explain that the seedlings would grow if they would be patient. You know how patient hummers are LOL!

Janice

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

I'll save one of each of the Salvias for you, and I've got one Salvia madrensis (forsythia sage) for you as well. This is a rarity for Salvias in that it is yellow flowering and very lovely. I'll also save you a Cassia reticulata and a C. fistula.

One of my favorite sights in the Yucatan are the Cassia fistula street trees in the city of Merida. They are called Lluvia de Oro in Mexico (Rain of Gold). They are just fabulous in bloom and should do well in your area because we got one to overwinter here thus the reason for planting more seed. Truly a striking flowering tree.

best,
Don
