Actually, Judy, I'm about to send out some coleus cuttings, so your packaging tip was very timely!
Thanks!
Sounds like nobody should count on cuttings of my new coconut one, which is a shame, because it's pretty cool. The leaves are shaped like little lily pads, not unlike nasturtium. But I'll hope to have seeds or seedlings to offer down the road! (Kathy! You really should have snatched those seedlings for us, LOL!)
Scented Geranium Swap (Pelagonium)
LOL, wellllll, I guess I can go back and ask, doesn't hurt does it LOL.
I'd be so embarressed, I could offer to dig them and buy them, LOL they'd think I was nuts.
You should read down one of the "snatchin' threads" that Weezingreens starts.... your embarassment would fade! With something like that, I always figure there's no harm in asking, "Hey, I noticed a bunch of volunteer seedlings under that plant back there. Are you planning to pot them up? If not, may I have them? I'd even be willing to pay something for them...." If you went back & saw them in the compost pile, you'd be sad.
If they self sow that readily, I'm hoping everyone here that wants one could have one eventually regardless of your success in snatching..... I'll be sure to save seeds. Do you know if SG's cross readily? Do I need to isolate the plants or the blooms in order to get Coconut geranium seeds that will grow out true?
they do self sow, if their left out where the seeds can get a hold, those plants at the nursery, were dropping seeds in gravel, and babies everywhere it was disgusting to say the least, I'm sure they'll pot them up and sell them for 4 or 5 bucks a piece. i'll stop by there to day while i'm in town and have a look see if their stilldown there.
PLMK how to collect seeds from the SG's, as I've never paid much attention before, and I'll hope my coconut SG produces seeds in time to send some along for the swap as a little bonus. Thanks!
I'm potting my new SGs into larger pots today, hoping to encourage them to grow, grow, grow -- so I can take more cuttings, of course! :-)
ok-- not a scented-- but I snached a cutting off a Martha Washington Gereanuim at the Wiliams-Sonoma store yesterday!! Think it will root? (I ad the manager's pernnmission LOL!!!!)
Heather
sure it will root heather, if you have some rooting hormone just stick it in ther e and put some on the end you cut off and stick it in the moist soil, keep it moist. it should root, others may root differently too, this is how I root and have great success with it.
Critter, when the coconut or any other scented blooms, don't dead head the flowers, they'll produce seed pods, and they will open up automatically when ready to harvest, you have to keep a close eye out on it, so it doesn't drop the seeds. I'll go out to the greenhouse to see if I can get a close up shot of some seed pods opening, not promising it will come out though LOL
this is an ivy geranium, starting to put off a long spike with seeds inside it will pop eventuallly spreading seeds everywhere , I've picked so many unripe coconut scented seeds, that now I just wait till they get like the one in the first picture so I know thier ready to harvest. I had about 5 little spots on that plant with that many seeds on it today. Ic ould pick 30 seeds a day on it, but I've started letting them fall . LOL I guess I could pick seeds for someone who wants to try them. I'll try to get a picture of the babies in the greenhouse tonight. and post it for yall
This is a discussion that is going on in: Plant Trading: USPS Priority Package - how long should I wait??? http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/514017/
It may have nothing to with here but maybe it's a thought; This was my answer:
Well the best response I ever got from a track and confirm was through United Parcel Service
I had ordered some strawerry plants last year for this years delivery. Well, I moved and forgot to tell them. They had shipped the order out to me; and notifed me by email that day it was shipped. I watched where it was going via **United Parcel Service** tracking method; it was recorded at each station it went through daily in the morning & evening, whenever it changed hands. I intercepted it before going out for delivery at 9AM and it was deverted to my correct address. They had even sent me out a secondary shipment by mistake of the same order and I did the same. When I spoke with them about it, they told me to keep both orders and that I didn't need to pay for the second order, it was their fault.
Now that's track & confirm service, the way it should be!

Great picture of the seedpods -- thanks, Kathy! -- now I know just what to look for. I may bag the developing pods so I won't lose the seeds if they pop when I'm not looking. Sounds like you've grown out seeds before, so I guess I don't have to worry about bagging blooms so I don't get crosses. I'll certainly save whatever seeds I can -- they're easier to ship than cuttings, and I'll be able to add SGs to my trade list.
Is robin's post in the wrong place? just wondering.
You know, I have no idea about cross pollination, but I went to the nursery today, you know the one that had the baby coconuts on the floor LOL. they pot them up of course. LOL I was embarressed he he, there was no cross pollination on those little babies, they were a picture perfect coconut scented for sure. the whole greeenhouse was full of geraniums too, so I really don't know if they cross or not, but how else would you get new varieties right? I know i've seen humming birds in the greenhouse but no bees yet. dont usually see any either.
and I'm pretty new to germinating the seeds this is my first year with the coconut seeds, I only did them cause it was hard to propigate by cuttings, I'll run out to the greenhouse and snap a pic real quick of the babies
oh, those are really cute, Kathy!
I'm thinking maybe the SG's don't generally cross, but you could surely do deliberate crosses by hand pollinating. I won't worry about it, but I will try to save seeds if my SG's bloom, especially the coconut one.
Good for you for checking about those SG babies.... otherwise, we'd all have been wondering! Don't be embarassed; if the nursery guy was a "plant person," he'd totally understand about wanting to make sure those babies weren't going to be scrapped!
BTW, I am probably stopping by DeBaggio's again tomorrow before picking up DH at the airport.... any requests? Maybe they will have more cinnamon geraniums, but I'm not holding my breath.
How much do they run?? If they have any Apple, lemon merange, or orange ... I will send you the $$ and pick it up at the RU.
Heather
They were $6 or $7 (sorry, memory is fuzzy). Are you sure you want orange? Bassetmom and Kathy_ann both had orange on their propagation lists, so I was trying to hold out for the swap on those. I'll certainly pick up whatever you want, and don't send $ now, we'll figure it out at the RU. PLMK before 11 am Saturday, if possible.
if you like a sharp lemon scent, lemon crispum or lemon fancy is the best of the best for lemon scented scenteds.
any of these would be lovely, joy lucille, mrs, kingley, true rose capitatum
silver leaf rose, old spice, gooseberry/peach, fair ellen oak, pretty polly, candy dancer, french vanilla, pheasants foot, . ok, that should satisfy me,
but don't pay over 3.75 to 4.00 for them, hobbs farm has them on sale it looks like their normal price is usually 4.50 their all marked down. so guess who's fixin to order some
ok-- forget orange then.... LOL! I have an atter of roses I am expecting in a trade YAY!!!!! and my cit. BUT-- I tend to like friuty scents so if they have an apple or lemon..... I am going to see Bassetmom tomorrow so take this as my "final answer" ;-) Did you mention to her about my picking up stuff?
Heather
scratch the above critter, I just placed an order with hobbs, LOL. i'm such a bad person
kathy
I just bought these, but I figured I could since I made $110.00 today selling plants, I put an add in the paper, dividing perennials. so they'd know theirnot in pots, and a lady came out and mopped up LOL. I was just selling my extras and ones that multiplied. how about that. had money to buy geraniums LOL

i was reading their feedback on their web site, and folks were saying how big they were, so maybe i'll be able to do cuttings of these. we'll see in a week or so.
Heather, Barb was delighted to hear you'd be able to take a box back with you for me. I'm delighted too! Thanks for being so generous about that. Pick out something extra for yourself, please, and of course feel free to take any cuttings that you might like. If DeBaggio's has a Lemon Meringue, I will sniff it and see if I think it is a lovely enough lemon for you! (likewise with the Apple) I love the fruit & spice scented ones too!
Oh, and you will love 'Attar of Roses'! Today, I checked the ones I started in water several weeks ago, and 5 of 12 'Attar of Roses' cuttings have tiny rootlets! There's nothing from the 'Chocolate Peppermint' that are in water, but I'll have more cuttings stuck soon, and I may take these out of the water and stick them too. Yes, I've stopped rooting in water and have switched to rooting in potting medium as described above.... potted cuttings are bagged & under lights, on a heat mat with the thermostat set to 78 degrees.
Kathy_ann, I suppose it's just as well you placed that order.... not only are the geraniums at DeBaggio's more expensive than your $4 max, but also I don't think they had anything on your list!
LOL, oh well, some of those geraniums were on sale for 2.75 and 2.50 which was way cool. hey I wouldn't mind the attar of roses if you have any extras.
kathy
maybe I can get some cuttings off these that come
I've been able to take multiple cuttings from 'Attar of Roses' and should be able to get more next week plus more from the 'Chocolate Peppermint'. We'll see how quickly the new ones grow. I'm hoping everyone who wants one will get one! :-)
Heather, they didn't have 'Lemon Meringue', so I figured you'd just as soon have another lemon scented one from the swap. I sniffed the 'Apple' SG, but I just didn't think it had much of a scent, so I left it there as well. Still no 'Cinnamon' SG, and they are done propagating for the season, :-(
Tom DeBaggio was there, and we enjoyed chatting with him, although I'm sorry to report that his Altzheimer's has really progressed in the 2 years since I've seen him. But he's still soft-spoken and charming, and he seems very content amid all his plants. For anyone who hasn't heard the story, he was hit mid-life with the Altzheimers. He did manage to write down much of his knowledge in his books, including _The Big Book of Herbs_, and he also wrote a book about living with this disease, called _Losing My Mind_.
So, I actually didn't get any SGs on this trip. Of course, we did pick out a few non-geranium items, LOL!
Boy oh boy, I'm gone for a few days and you all just post and post and post! What a great thread this is!
I THINK I have stuck cuttings for all my SGs. I will check tomorrow. I am a bit cross-eyed at the moment...
Heather, did you see the news that night??? You were on it with Ellie, taking your flat from her... at 6 and 11! Very cool! I was so happy to meet a DG'er! And, for the record, Ellie and I both wore our DG shirts that day, folks! Oh, how is the little one's knee?
Barb
I saw it at 6 -- a friend called me at 11:30 to tell me she saw it again (I could have KILLED her LOL!). Rhiannon's knee is fine she has so many scrapes lately that it blends right in....
Jill you plants are making themsleves at home in my tent (gazebo type thing) with the rest of my seedling ect... now if they'll all make it to you ... I donno -- they may jump into a garden here.... ;-)
I got my Atter Rose--- umm can you say TINY?? it was a bit of root with some babies just starting to grow soooo it will be quite a while before I can take cuttings-- mybe next year.. When do they start smelling? I couldn't detect any rose scent.
So Barb What's left from the sale??
Heather
Heather, I can't thank you enough for giving my box of plants shelter & TLC.... I hope you picked out something for yourself, and I hope you'll feel free to take cuttings etc! I'll almost certainly have 'Attar of Roses' SG's for the swap, as 5 of my cuttings that were in the water have now struck roots, and I'm about to take some more cuttings from my big main plant. My plant was probably 6 inches tall with several stems when I got it, and it smelled heavenly from the start. I'll bring one to the RU for you, Heather. BTW, Barb just asked about the RU when she emailed me.... send her email & help me talk her into going!
And this isn't a SG thing, but BlueSpiral, you'll be happy to know that when I planted my Hall's Wooly Thyme today, I noticed it had already begun layering in its little pot, so I potted up half a dozen little cuttings.... if they take, I will share! :-)
Kathy_ann, I've been meaning to tell you that your ivy geranium in that picture is just gorgeous! If you're willing to save seeds from it, I'd love to find something to swap you in return....
I don't remember posting an ivy geranium? I didn't see itup there, which one are you talking about ?
I never did post those other pictures did I LOL
i'll do that now
you were showing me the seed pods.... your post starts, "this is an ivy geranium..." :-)
I'll have to take some pictures of my 3 new big geranium pots (the pots are big, the geraniums are striving to match them, LOL.... I put them 2 to a pot, with a smaller/trailing variety in front). But I am not going out there in the dark with my camera.... it's groundhog mating season out back, and that could get pretty wild! Ha!
Very pretty! Judy is just going to flip over the variegation on that one! The splashes of white/cream remind me of "fantasy" markings, like some of my new African violets have....
That looks a *lot* like my Cody's Nutmeg..... I wonder if they smell different? I suspect it's just the lighting in the picture, but had to ask if your Nutmeg has a thin, light colored edging around the outside of the leaf? The leaves on my 'Cody's Nutmeg' have a lot of silver-grey to their color, and they are soft like silk velvet.....
OK, no more comments from me tonight.... it's time for sleep! Better wash my feet first..... was out planting peppers this evening. :-)
You are right about me going ape over the snowflake scented....its gorgeous...I told Kathyann that I went and bought some scenteds at Hobbs...so we are all going to have enough scented plants to enjoy...yippeee what a great idea having this swap...Judy
yes, aren't we having a ball LOL.
my nutmeg doesn't have any silvering at all in the leaves, solid color green, but very silky feeling, distinct nutmeg scent, very strong. post a pic of your nut meg critter.
I'll give you guys a holler when my scenteds come in, post a pic so you can see them, I've heard good news from feedback on their site of them sending out huge geraniums, we'll have to see LOL
Kathy_ann, check your May 27, 4:07 pm post..... there's your picture of the ivy geranium! The picture is really of the seed pods, but it seems to me I see some pale lavender blooms back there as well as some lovely foliage!
I'll post geranium pics soon, including that Cody's Nutmeg. My cuttings are looking good, although I haven't started tugging on them yet to check for roots. I'm just happy to see them all looking green & sturdy!
oh ok, those are white flowers with burgundy sploches in the centers of the petals. I have a fushia colored ivy, red ivy, pink ivy and that white one.
