Where is a good source to purchase scented gernaiums for people who have none to trade?
Thanks.
Scented Geranium Swap (Pelagonium)
there are quite a few places out there to get scented geraniums, but the only one that I know of that doesn't have bad feedback on watchdog is hobbs farm, I'm going up to maine next summer, I know that's along way away, but hobbs farm is up there, and we are going to stop by there before we head back home, I can't wait LOL, best part about my vacation next summer, everyone else has severe bad ratings, and some have been turned into the better business bureau.
Okay, I'm here!
I'd take citronella so let's put Heather on the list! Heather, you can try to root them or send them to Critter, whichever way you two want to do it.
Kathy_Ann: I'll put you on the list above and we'll skip the one-one as we emailed.
No, my strawberry doesn't cascade. Just gets bigger and bigger as I pot up. Lovely flower, too! Though I'd take some pics of the flowers to add here from time to time.
Don't worry if I don't post every day. The MS sometimes keeps me from the 'pute but never more than a day.
Barb
YAY!!! I was hopin against hope somebody would want some (and I figured if not-- I would have plenty to keep away the skeeteres) so I took a few cuttings (7 or so) to try and root! Also I figured- why not and am trying to root the leaves like and AV-- the worst that can happen is that it won't work so why not? Soooo hopefully I didn't screw it up to badly and I will have rooted cuttings in a couple weeks.
Are you going to be selling any at the sale this weekend???
Heather
No, I want to try and get some going for next year's sale (after this swap of course). Have to keep a rein on my enthusiasm sometimes...
By the way I have great plastic boxes for propgrating (I'll try and take a pic tomorrow). Saves all that plastic bag stuff... Bit ones for big cuttings, small ones for wee ones. They are actually display boxes...
Oh, I forgot Julie on the list. Will add her now...
Have I missed anyone? (Did no one else notice I spelled the plant wrong in the title?)
Barb
Needless to say, Bluekat76 and I had a fabulous time at DeBaggio's today!
I picked up
'Lime' Geranium
'Coconut' Geranium
'Strawberry' Geranium (the semi-trailing one)
'Cody's Nutmeg'
'Southernwood' (which is going straight to BassetMom!)
I also found some neat thymes!
'Pinewood' (lavender) creeping thyme
'Spicy Orange' creeping thyme
'Caraway' creeping thyme
'Hall's Wooly' creeping thyme
'Provincal' french thyme
Plus, I picked up a Sweet Annie plant, a 'Spanish Lavender', and half a dozen tomato plants for a friend who's a very experienced grower and is heartsick over losing well over 100 tomato seedlings to a virus this spring. (She got many of my extras, and Bluekat76's too, and her son found her 30 plants at another grower, so her garden won't be entirely lacking.)
Heather, I'm pretty sure it has to be a stem cutting and not just a leaf for propagating SGs, but I admire your enthusiasm! BTW, I'll start a couple of cuttings, and then that strawberry geranium has your name on it..... I'd be particularly happy to swap it for some of that bamboo you've been snatchin' if you score some more!
ooh! ooh! Terre_, I would adore some cuttings of your cinnamon geranium! That's the one I wanted really badly that DeBaggio's didn't have today! You should've seen me bounce around in my chair when I read your post! I'm in the address exchange. Unless anyone else has a better suggestion for packing cuttings, please wrap a bit of moist paper towel around the base of the stem and put them into a zip-type baggie. Blow a little air into the baggie when you seal it. Wadded or shredded paper, scrunched grocery bags, or packing "peanuts" make good extra protection. A little box would probably work best, but a bubble envelope would probably be fine with a little extra padding/protection. Thanks, and PLMK what I can send you in return. If I can get more than 1 cutting to root, we could also add you to the swap if you want.
Barb, the idea with the plastic boxes is great.... one of those "why didn't I think of that??" solutions!
Judy, I'm sorry that DeBaggio's didn't have a Grey Lady Plymouth, but maybe if KathyAnn can start one for you we can earmark it for you as your first pick. The only other variegated one we saw looked kinda puny and didn't have much scent, so we skipped over it (Prince something, with gold variegation on the leaves).
C_Rose, I believe Sandy Mush Herb Nursery has a very nice selection of scented geraniums, and unlike DeBaggio's, they will send plants. I've visited the nursery (once, many years ago) & was really impressed, but have not ordered from them (yet). GW lists them with a 100% satisfaction rating, http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/1117/
Thanks critter! :)
well, I don't think there's anything on your list then critter that I'll need, I have all those scented geraniums, the strawberry is coming from basset, and I have the rest but the southernwood, would't mind a rooted cutting of that, but I see it's been spoken for.
soo, I'm only trading with basset mom right? just checking to make sure.
I do have a couple lady plymoth I can spare,
kathy_ann, why don't you just wait and see what happens with the swap instead of worrying about trying to figure out your final trade right now? I did take a few cuttings of the southernwood before sending it off, and I thought you were interested in my Cocoa Mint Rose, and you also mentioned wanting 'Dr Livingstone', which I think Judy was trying to propagate. BTW, it sounds like my new strawberry geranium may be different than Barb's, since DeBaggio describes its habit as semi-trailing.
I am soo gonna score more bamboo-- there are severla houses around here with it-- LOL!! I'll just go to them ALL!!
Heather
sorry, I already forgot about those. I guess if I dont' write it down I don't remember LOL
Just checking in... I'm hoping to go to a local nursery tomorrow for a donation for this weeknd's sale AND score some SG's. This will be a rare treat for me, as rarely get to such places in person. Taking the above list with me to see if there is anything new, if not I'll just treat myself which will make more selection for the rest of you when I do the final sort. did that make sense?
Terre_, are you joining in with your cinnamon?
Barb
I can send Kathy ann some Dr Livingston when its ready..I also got a few more scenteds coming so I hope to have enough to share when the time comes....got feelers out all over the place so I should have a goodly amount to share in the swap...Judy
Heather -- you go, girl! Just let us know what you'd like in exchange!
Judy, I don't think KathyAnn was backing out of the swap, so it's probably easier to just send everything to BassetMom in one go, don't you think?
I think we've all got feelers out, trying to get even more varieties, or at least cuttings from ones we don't have! Our windowsills are all going to be so full this winter! :-)
Sounds good to me..I just bought 2 scented and will take cuttings as soon as its big enough...Judy
nope not backing out here, just send it all to bassetmom, I will to,
kathy
well Ive got a few more scenteds....lolol....pine and one I really really wanted...variegated Peacock....Judy
oh woohoo, i've been wanting both those, I had a peacock one a couple years ago, but I lost it, hope you can get cuttings off it.
Well, I only got choc mint, rose mint and varigated mint today, but that will leave more of those for whoever needs them. Big plants, though, so I'm happy with them.
Barb
Ive got a few trades going but since we are going on vacation the 11th of June I may not get them before we start sending rooted cuttings...Judy
basset mom, put me down for that varigated mint, I love anything variegated ok. I'm sure I can come up with another something to give you for it LOL
They are nice big plants, chosed for just that purpose, Kathy!
Barb
great, we're gonna have us one huge swap going LOL
I took the liberty of taking a few photos today of some of my geraniums,
this first one is the platinum fancy leaf, this is just a rooted cutting, but I wanted to take a shot of the flower. the mother plant is right next to it. I have quite a few of these rooting
I have a few more to post will post afterwhile
kathy
Kathy ann, I think teh grey lady plymouth was for me..I have the Dr Livingston that I know you want..may I ask if the robers lemon rose is the same as a plain old lemon rose?..I got a cutting of that one....Judy
I've not heard of the plain old lemon rose, nor have I seen it, don't really know that, sorry. does yours look similar to mine (the leaf)?
Great pictures, Kathy! Especially love the 'Apricot' and the 'Lilac Rose'! I'll see if I can get a shot of my 'Chocolate MInt' to post, as it's developed the dark centers to the leaves again since I set it outside. I've got about 8 cuttings that I hope will strike roots soon. I have a bunch of other cuttings downstairs on the heat mat under the lights now.... the 'Coconut' one wasn't big enough for even one cutting yet, but I'll pamper all the new ones so they'll shoot up fast, LOL!
you'll have trouble rooting the coconut for sure. it's the hardest one to root I think, their trailing plants, and don't really get tall like others, and it's hard to root the trailing part. I have a couple of coconut scented geraniums, and I propigate them by seeds, got one now in the gh, andit's about 2 in tallnow. doing quite well, I've gathered alot of seeds, now their just dropping on the floor , hope they germinate down there, I was at the local nursery and they had the huge coconut scented geraniums for l3.99 big hanging baskets of them, and litttle coconut scenteds on the ground sprouting everywhere, I almost asked if I could have them or buy them LOL, but I passed on it.
maybe that's why my chocolate mint isn't getting brown on the centers of the leaves, cause it's hanging in the greenhouse. not outside.
Its kind of early since mine is just a small cutting...it does look darker then yours but that could be light related....Judy
yes it could be, good thing about cuttings, is they grow tall fast, and you cut them back stick them in the same pot and keep dong this till you get a nice plant , which is how most of mine became nice plants LOL
and the other nice thing is when I send out cuttings without rooting them I just snip, put it in wet paper towel..put air in the ziplock and send it out..I really like how tough they are...
Ok, you send out closed up in zip lock bags? I thought that was a no no, especially in the heat, just wondering, I got a package in the mail today, it was sealed up in a bag and rotted, i've received with air in the bags, no rotting, but I don't think honestly that's a good idea shiping sealed up in any kind of bag with or without air. water gets on the green leaves and causes rot. fast.
I always wrap the end in moist paper towels wrap the end then in saran wrap and leave the top out so it can get air. I was just about to post on (the other place) about sending plants sealed up in bags, air or not. why take the chance that the air is going to stay in the bag, right?
just some useful info or my info.
I also think I"m going to start asking with all my trades that theynot seal up in bags. i've received quite a few in bags and they were a rotting stinky mess when they got here.
Hmmm..I have shipped out lots of scented that way and never had anybody complain..maybe its been the right time of year but you are right about the mush part....Ive just never experienced it...I do put them in the middle of the box so they stay cooler.....I also have a different way to send coleus cuttings..take all the cuttings and wrap the ends in wet paper towel...put that in a ziplock...take the cuttings which usually are huge..about 18 inches tall..wet them down..shake and wrap in a newspaper that has been spritzed with water...the cuttings come just like fresh cut cuttings..this isnt pertaining to scented but thought to share...I guess I could do the same for scenteds...lolol.....Judy
