Here is a close up of the bloom.
The Epis Are Here, The Epis Are Here!! 2005 PART THREE
Rose.... "a few"???? Are you showing off? LOL That's stunning! Wow wow wow! Congratulations!
-Julie
Thanks Julie.
Yes, I am very proud of my baby. She is very special to me, because she is my first epi. She was also a gift from my DH. I want more of them. It is my entire DH fault I am now addicted to them. LOL
Patti
Great color, Rose!
Thanks Clare.
Rose,
She's a beauty!
What is in the green pot to the left of your epi? It has pink coloration to it. I can't tell if it is another epi or some kind of rattail cactus.
Darius,
yesterday's post - mine are just budding and I am also in 6b. They usually flower here in June, but I think they are late this year.
Your Epi oxy looks good! Lots of new shoots. I would predict nice flowers in August on the pads developing from that. In the meanwhile, some of the older pads might just bud already?
Darius, did you get that one from Antoinette? That looks like a Epiphyllum oxypetalum. I just stuck a tomato cage in with mine as it was growing those long shoots too. I'm so mad that two leaves broke off during this process, but I just stuck them back in. It looks like I may have some buds too, but those could be new leaves coming in so it is too soon to say yet. Very exciting!
Clare, yes, it's an Epiphyllum oxypetalum, and I've had it for 8-9 years, before even DG. Started out as one leaf cutting and the neighbor who gave it to me called it "Christ in the Manger". Last year I divided it (couldn't keep the pot upright) and gave away about half, plus a few more rooted cuttings this year. It will take some time to get root-bound again.
This one has usually bloomed in Aug-Sept. There is a whole time-series of one of my buds opening in PF, stayed up half the night to photograph it!
I just had an idea. How about an Epiphyllum Forum? What do you guys think?
Clare your bud is getting so close! Yummy.....
rose 318 - Looks like our "pinks" are on about the same schedule. Lovely!
darius - These Epis love to eat....and eat .....and eat. I don't think you can overfeed them if it is dilute enough.
Here's another update on my "pinks"...... those cold snaps that I was so worried about, doesn't seem to have bothered them a bit!

Just beautiful, Candy!
NOW who's showing off?! LOL OMG Candy....them's a lotta buds and blooms! It doesn't just overwhelm the camera....it overwhelms me too! Wow!
-Julie
The glare today is just weird....very high overcast and that funny kind of storm to come sky.....I'm beginning to think we're not gonna have a summer. Rained yesterday and supposed to have more today, more than a month into our "no rain" season. :-)
No sign of the whites yet, but they are getting close too.....can't wait, these have an incredible aroma.
OMG, Candy! When you say whites, are those Epiphyllum oxypetalum buds?
Shirley,
Yes it is a rhipsalis to the left of the epi.
Happenstance.
Yep our pink beauties are on the same schedule. What is the name of your pink beauty? Your plant is beautiful too.
I have night blooming epi ( white) rooted ,and I will be taking cuttings of my pink beauty for other epi's. I would love some other epi colors.
Epi forum great Idea Clare.
As far as I know these are just a white Epi hybrid, generally open during the day (but sometimes in the late evening), heavy fragrance and large blooms.
rose - these came as unnamed cuttings many years ago, so I don't have names on them.
There are just a few of us, probably not enough to sustain an Epi Forum this year...
But WATCH OUT as these Ugli Plants catch on!
Amazing flowers!
Clare I have mixed feelings about asking Dave for an Epi forum, but not strong inclinations one way or the other. There is the issue of the new hardware he is working on to improve performance which is due in another month or so. I think that's his focus right now.
Doing just a quick count since the first of the year, I'm estimating that there were an average of 5 posts per day about Epis in one form or another. That certainly is in line with some of the other less travelled forums, but I don't think those numbers could be sustained over the summer and fall months.
In my case, once my Epis have finished blooming over the next month or so, I won't have very much to add other than a reminder to bait for snails, feed every couple of weeks, and then locate them inside or in a sheltered location to winter over. We can certainly help people with questions on care and possible species ID's or locating sources to purchase them during the slow months.
Anyone else have an opinion about a seperate forum? Like I said I don't feel strongly one way or the other and would be willing to go with the flow of popular opinion.
As for an Epi Forum, the thing is, it would only be relevant for a few months of the year. Half the year would be dead air time. Just MHO....
-Julie
I think an Epi forum would fly. During the non bloom time, we can trade leaves, discuss soils, fertilizers, re-potting and the like. There certainly are a bunch of us interested, more would come if there was a forum. Perhaps Dave can use that as a poll question....."would you be interested in participating in an Epi Forum?"
Karen ;~D
I belong to a Plumeria forum on another site, and I never thought to ask for one here because of the same issues that Candy mentioned. Plumerias are beautiful and exciting for only about five months of the year for most people, and they are dormant during the colder months. There aren't a lot of growers of plumerias right now, but more are coming all the time. I was really excited when Dave gave us our own plumeria forum. I think the same thing would happen with an Epi forum, and I agree with Karen that we could talk about related things when they are not actively blooming. Maybe it should be called a Orchid Cacti forum and should include Hylocereus, Selenicereus, and Epiphyllums. It could also include Chrismas Cactus and Rhipsalis, and all things generally called Orchid Cacti. But, if Dave is busy with other stuff right now, then maybe we can ask at a later time if everyone is interested in one. For me personally -- and please don't take this the wrong way -- when I go to the Cactus and Succulents Forum, I skim the threads until the word "Epiphyllum" or "Selenicereus" or "Night-blooming Cacti" catches my eye, and I read those. I like some other cacti and succulents, but I am most interested in the different types of Orchid Cacti.
Here is my bud today. It's pink!
OOoooooo Aaaaaahhhhhhhh! Purdy Clare! :-)
-Julie
Beautiful, Julie! Can you detect a fragrance?
Thanks Clare :-). Yes it's got a lovely fragrance. Nothing like some of the knock your socks off, smell up the whole house with heavenly aroma Epis, but it's nice :-)
-Julie
Julie what time is it where you are now? Your flower is lovely!
Oh wow......a pink and a white! Love them both.....Julie your white looks a lot like mine so far. Don't you just love they way they "puff" up right before they open?
Hi again Clare :-). Right now it's 10:55 pm. We're GMT-2 here. And thank you again :-) I'm off to see if it has opened any more. I can't stay out there unfortunately because my garden is under aphid attack (the month of May!) ACK!
-Julie
Ah, so this is a night bloomer. Very interesting! But you don't think it is Epiphyllum oxypetalum; right? Do you know what it might be? Sorry if I asked this before. I can't remember now. I thought all flat-leaved white fragrant night-bloomers were Epi oxy? Just take a strong stream of water to those aphids, Julie, and it will wipe them right out. Safers insecticidal soap works well too.
