Cut Lilacs?

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I bought my mother some lilacs for her birthday and that was more than a week ago and they're still pretty spiffy. Then for mother's day I cut some from a friend's bush and they started wilting the same day they were cut.

I would LOVE to know what florists use to keep their flowers so fresh and new looking.

I've heard of asprin, sugar, etc but they don't don't work as well as whatever the florist used.

were the stems smashed or cut?

Cut. Wouldn't smashed prevent any intake of water?

I've seen 'em smashed on various home & garden TV shows. As in
take a hammer and whack at the stems. I tried cutting into the ends
of lilac with sissers but it didn't really work that well. I wonder if you
soaked the entire branch w/flower trusses in warm water for a few hours
if that would help.

Sorry - no real knowledge here ;-) Just curious to hear what works too.
I love the smell of lilacs. I'm going to go out a cut a bouquet now and
try a few different things.

I belong to a garden club, and at our national meeting a lady who supplies cut flowers to shops told us the following:

For Lilacs....after cutting...immerse the entire plant in water and leave for 15 to 20 minutes and this will make the lilacs last approx two weeks.

I have yet to try this...but will when I cut lilacs in the future.

Ewwwww darn! I wish I had know that 2 weeks ago! My lilacs are nearing their end!! Thanks!

Even the flowers?!

Yep...from what I understand...the entire stem and flower. Afterall...the water will evaporate from the flowers after a short while. As I said....I have not tried this...but if I ever have any lilac blooms I will give it a shot.

Good Luck, Deb
