Prepping my soil??

Beaconsfield, QC(Zone 5b)

Okay, calling all you wonderful and knowledgeable folks at Dave's ! I need advice on prepping the soil for my herbs! I've got an L-shaped box off the corner of my deck that contains 13.5 cubic feet of space. What's the best combo and proportion of earth/compost/manure etc, etc to make my herbs flourish? What's best?: topsoil vs potting soil, compost vs manure, and if manure, what kind?: sheep? mushroom? Do I need to completely change the soil in this box every year? If not, how much of the old soil do I get rid of? So, have I asked enough questions already??? :-)

I am eagerly awaiting your responses! :-)

Herbs are very happy with just plain dirt. Most of them like some abuse in my book, as far as perrenials go. Basil, parsley and other annuals like the potting soil. My favorite is Thyme-plain dirt.

Sharron, I would just ammend (enrich) the soil with some compost, unless the exisiting soil is unsatisfactory for some other reason... such as invasive weeds, rocks, etc. In that case, you can remove the soil and screen it to remove the unwanted materials, then return it to the box. If the box is very deep, you could consider putting gravel in the bottom for drainage, though this may not be an issue if your summers are dry. The pH & nutrient requirements of each herb can be entirely different. You can cater to individual needs by side-dressing specific plants.
