Red Yes vs. Black No

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Could there be a way to change the 'Yes' to 'No' without having to go to the thread and back? Some of us are just tooo lazy.

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

I agree with Ulrich. One needs to visit a lot of threads to keep track of what one has previously visited. It would be good if by clicking on the Yes, it would be marked as read without downloading the thread.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

That's an even better idea yet because it would also work for the 'watched' Forums.
Thanks.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Maybe I'm missing something. Why not just go to your Watched Threads list and unwatch them? Or are you just saying you want to have everything in a forum marked as NO even if you don't visit the thread?

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

No this is quite separate from the watched threads. Every time one visiots a forum, there are a lot of threads marked as having new postings and one scans through them all for any that you may want to explore further. If you don't read the threads they remain unread and the next time you visit the forum there is an even longer list of unread threads to scan over with no checl of where one has looked previously. By simply marking threads as read you could skip over them until such time as they are posted to anew

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Ahhhh.....I understand now.

I guess from what I've noticed (particularly in forums like Daylilies and Iris and probably many others I don't frequent) that threads often have a rash of postings to them so that every time I visit the forum over a few days that it is always a "YES" because there is heavy posting activity.

I understand what you mean though and can see it as a benefit to me in the manner in which I surf the site/forums. I would, however, ask that if this is implemented that it be user activated as opposed to an automatic feature that sets all YES to NO once you've visited a forum page.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

langbr (Brenda?), if kennedyh's excellent idea is implemented nothing would change for you; you would have to click on the 'Yes' to take effect.

Now but to catch Dave's attention:
HALLLOOO!

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Yep...I understand that, Ulrich. I can definitely see the benefit, especially to those on dial up.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Hi Dave,
is this worthy of your attention sometime in the future after the new server is settled in?
I hope so, the red is overflowing, HELP!

Edited for skipped keys.

LOL LOL ......you are killin' me Ulrich.

You are like a dog with a bone. :-)

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

I hope that's good and not like it sounds, LOL.

Northern California, CA

Tsk Tsk Tsk......it means you are tenacious when you are on a mission to bring about change. :-)

Okay, try clicking on the Yes and No now and see if it works.

It only works in the forums - not the homepage.

dave

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I tried it on the Garden Products and Co-op Forums and it worked just fine. Thanks a lot, Dave. Another 'minor' change that makes DG smoother to use than any other site I have seen. :^)

I'm glad you like it. :) I use the XMLHttpRequest model wherever I can. :-)

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

That is VERY cool, thank you!
Mary Ev.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

And where the heck is Ulrich? This is his baby and he's missing out. LOL

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

Thanks Dave, that's great. It will shorten the time to catch up on the forums considerably.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Well, I have a question....Should the markers be saved? Right now, I can go into a forum and change the yeses to nos, but if I exit and go back in, they're all back to yeses.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

This sure got off to a slow start, but look at it now! Kennedyh down under deserves honorary mention.
Thanks Dave. Yup, it pays to be tenacious, Ms. Happenstance, so it's a good thing, LOL.

Mary,

It should definitely be saving them. When they turn to No, they stay no until they are posted to again.

What happens is: If you click several Yes's to No and then select one of the threads, if you use the back button to return to the forum, your browser has cached the unaltered forum and the No's go back to Yes's.
This is only a veneer however. If you go back to your home page and reselect the forum, you will find all the No's you set are definitely recorded.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

I love it, I love it!
Now we just need a short line of instructions above the titles to inform future generations of DGers about the feature, right?

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Hey, MaryEv is right, the No's don't stick now, not even with kennedyh's way.
Oh well, it sure was fun while it lasted.

No, it is definitely sticking, since it is actually updating the database. You must certainly be looking at a cached copy.

Please try a Shirt-Refresh and see if that works.

dave

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

What is a Shirt-Refresh? If I follow KennedyH's instructions, exactly, it still doesn't work for me.

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

I think he meant Shift-Refresh. Poor Dave must have T-shirts on the brain. ;)

Northern California, CA

I think I like "Shirt-Refresh" better......more appropriate for gardeners after a hot days work in the sun!

Pssstttt.....Dave it doesn't work for me either, the NO's don't stick.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Yo, I even tried Shorts-Refresh and that doesn't work either.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

dunno - works fine for me (Mozilla user here.)

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

I agree with Ulrich. It works spasmodically. If i click on say 5 Yes's and then exit from a forum and then go back in to again, I will find that 2 or 3 have changed to No, bit the other 3 or 2 are unaffected. This happens consistently and I am also a Mozilla user.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Same here (on IE or firefox.) Or, one forum will do okay (eg: co-ops) but another won't (eg: container gardening)

Seems the first try works but subsequent attempts fail. Go figure.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Tenacious Ulrich here!
Hello Dave, you had it working once, and everybody loved it. So why is it gone again? Are we getting too spoiled or what?

Just wondering,
Max

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOL......don't give up easily do you Max??? ;)

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

That's what Happenstance noted earlier.
But I would look mighty silly without you folks' support.
Thanks all.

It's still working for me... I don't know why it's failing for any of ya'll.

dave

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Mine is working fine too..... I know Dave is on Firefox and I am too. Could it be the version of Firefox? I know I got a new update recently and I'm at Firefox 1.0.4

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

Well, what I do see is that you can change one only once and then it does not change until you exit the forum and come back.

So, if you accidently change one you have to leave and then come back to fix it.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Well, you musta done did sumptn, it works great just now.
Thanks, and I'm keeping my fingers and toes and eyes crossed for it to stay.
Could you then add a note on top to tell those who have been dozing through this about the beauty of this program?

Yours truly
