I'll post the pictures, and then I'll show you what happened. This is Charles Grimaldi planted in my front yard.
Before...
Before and After
Well, I'm sorry. I don't know what is wrong. I apparently can't upload any more pictures. I'll keep trying.
I keep looking and nothing has happened, Clare. LOL! I hope someone didn't run it over. One day I'd like to get another start of Charles Grimaldi. It bloomed so nicely for me.
Sorry about that Shirley. I keep posting more pictures, but only the first two are showing up. I don't understand why this is happening, but I'll keep trying, and I'll explain what happened. Basically, this Charles Grimaldi tree had grown huge, and I cut it back pretty severely. It took a long time to grow some branches back, and the ones that grew back looked sickly. When I examined it closely, it appear to be diseased, possibly with SB. So I tore it out today. I'll keep trying to post pictures so I can get your opinion and other's opinion. It is heartbreaking, but I have other brug trees nearby, and I am worried about them.
So sorry Clare....are you putting at least one character of text with your image? You need at least one character for the image to post.
Oh no, I hope you don't have that horrible SB. Don't know what to tell you about posting pictures. You should be able to do multiples. I think it was Karrie that put up several in a row today.
If you put the word "before" on the second attempt as well as the first image, I think the system believes you are trying to upload a duplicate and throws it out.
So sad......but we are lucky to live in a climate that will soon give you back some beautiful Brugs.

Oh, I understand. Thanks for explaining that, Candy. I see now.
I guess I can't even plant another brug there; right? I did get up all the roots, but I suppose the virus is in the soil; right?
GRkkkkkkkkkkkkk! You poor thing! CG 'before' is so beautiful!! Hope none of the nasty stuff lives here!...but you can bet it does, somewhere!!!
Carol
So Claire, what happened? And over what period of time? Was it sudden or gradual?
Jeanette
Wow, that is some strange looking stuff going on there. It doesn't look like the SB that I've seen, but that doesn't mean it isn't. Got me. I'm so sorry to see that tree down. It was so pretty. I hope Monika looks at this tomorrow when she gets up. I'll bet she could give you some idea of what might be going on with it.
Clare
it doesn't look like SB
all the picts of SB have a black ring around the sore
could something have damaged the plant ?
they look like wounds ? similar to wind damage
my CG has some wounds looking like that where the limbs rub against a rose bush
Dick
Bummer, Clare! how old was the CG and how old the one with the pink flowers to the right?
I'm brug challanged. What is SB?
I'm so sorry to see what happened to your Charles Grimaldi Brug. It was an absolutely gorgeous tree! It looks like SB lesions. Are your other Brugs alright?
Stangelbrand is a disease they sometimes get, but from what I've heard, it is usually found in yellow multihybrids. It is fatal and transfers easily to other brugs through the soil, I believe. However, again it is mostly the yellow multihybrids that are suseptible, but not to rule out others too.
Thanks, everyone. I hope Monika will give me her opinion too. It appears to have the dark markings like SB, and every few inches it has scars like something ate away at the outer cambium layer.
Jeanette, I'll have to go back and look at the dates on the pictures to figure out a time line for you. This picture was on January 1st, 2004.
Clare, I'm sooooo sorry, but it doesn't look like SB to me, or the photos I've seen. What was the time frame on this and do you have any others with problems?? Man, it was just beautiful, what a terrible shame!!!!!!
Woodspirit, here is another thread that has some SB information on it with pictures.

My, you guys are quick, or I'm really slow!
Dick, we do get some wind here, but there is not really anything to rub against. We also have lots of snails, but I would think they would eat the leaves before the ate the branches. Thanks for your help.
Nery, I have to go back and check the dates on my pictures, but I'm pretty sure that I planted CG in December, 2002, and Pink Beauty in early 2003, so that would make them about two years old.
This picture was taken in June, 2004, and I think I trimmed it some time after that -- maybe in late summer of 2004.
Thanks, Shirley. The others look fine and are growing normally. CG was definitely showing signs of stress, and the other ones aren't so far. The leaves of the CG were very abnormal and sickly looking, and it was only putting out a flower or two at the most.
i'm a brug novice, but what you're saying doesn't sound good. feel bad for you, clare.
Thanks, Sherry. Well, as near as I can figure, this happened very quickly after I pruned it severely some time after June 28, 2004, which is when I took the last picture above. It never came back well after that, and I thought maybe it would come back stronger in the spring, but if it wasn't SB, it was something that was making it look extremely unhealthy, and so I took it out. I have another CG growing in a container at least.
Sorry you had to chop your Brug down Clare. That's a bummer. :(
If it had been mine and I had other Brugs nearby instinct would have made me do just what you did.
Slugs, actually, killed some young orange trees we had full of leaves. They went for the bark and completely "ringed" them. There were lots of little bites too. Has anything splashed on the trunk...or burned it?
Thanks, Snow. That makes me feel better. I am starting to have doubts about whether I did the right thing by taking it out, but there is no sense having a sickly looking brug in the ground. I'd like to plant another brug in its place, but perhaps that would be prudent.
Carol, no, I don't think so. Those limbs were pretty high up and away from everything. I didn't even get new growth after I cut it for several months, and then winter came, and then the new growth looked bad right away. I even cut away another plant that was near it that was a snail haven. You can see that shrub trunk in the picture with the CG root system. I think this was diseased, if not SB.
So between June, 2004, and when you dug it up, no others are having problems?? I would think that if it was SB or otherwise contagious, that other plants would show some symptoms by this time. I wonder what the incubation period for SB??
Oh Clare. Break my heart. I just loved your brug pictures of your front. I do the same thing you did, if anything looks funny plus is not putting out good healthy growth, out it goes. I have too many to fuss over just one.
Did you use a sterilized pruner on it when you cut it back? I always boil all my clippers for 5 minutes between brugs o rany plant for that matter. Also if the cut is going to be a decent size, I seal the wound to help prevent any entry of nasties.
I am so sorry, Clare. I bet your neighbors are all going to notice it is gone. Such a beautiful sight.
Clare, it looks like it was pretty close to the fence, maybe it was rubbing against it when the wind would blow. It's really sad to see it gone, but now you have a spot for something new. I'm glad that you still have one in a pot. Since it was puny for a long time, it looks like you did the right thing. How much fun is it to have a yucky looking plant right on the corner where you see it from every direction?
Hi Kell. Thanks so much. I feel better knowing you would have done the same thing. It is such a shame, I agree. I have a little redbud seedling that I might put there or my Delonix regia seedling, but first I have to see if they are susceptible to this virus if indeed it is a virus. Yes, you are right. I definitely should have used a sealer on the wound because actually it was a decent size wound on several limbs. I think this might have been the cause of the problem. On my pruners, I do use a bleach solution and some wipee's which they use in hospitals, which will kill germs, viruses, bacteria, everything. Thanks for your help:-)
Thanks, Ronna. Yes, a sickly looking plant on the corner would not be fun to continue to look at, and it is right off of the driveway. The limbs were about a foot away and a couple of feet higher than the fence when I cut it down. Initially, it was hanging over the fence, and I had to cut it back. It has been cut back quite a few times over the past two years. I guess that wasn't the best place for it.
I just hope that it hasn't somehow spread to my other brugs. I'll keep you all informed. Thanks, all, for your help and support.
