need help with an alien garden! (well alien to me anyway)

Coral Springs, FL(Zone 10b)

A friend has asked me to put in a garden in Western New York. This is a terraced garden and part of a co-op condo type home. It is located in a place called Chautauqua Institution. The condo is below ground, but the gardens are eye level when sitting on her patio, you walk out her door and are confronted by shoulder high gardens on each side of you that are about 2 feet wide and 10 feet long. They are in deep shade. The rest of the narrow garden opens up into a teardrop shape and winds up at ankle level. Planted at the widest part of the tear are pachysandra...and what I remember to be a japanese locust tree.
The season is 9 weeks long so any ideas are appreciated to help me build her a big, pretty, high impact garden that will win the awards it deserves!

Hi Handbright! Could your friend do small container type gardening? Since the season is only 9 weeks and in deep shade there's a limit to what she could grow but ferns and houseplants might enjoy a nine week vacation.

I was a newbie, as they say, back when I wrote to you. Now I've found forums on hosta. Maybe your friend would like them in pots. Most plants do require some sun.

Amy, send me another email so I can see if I have the problem fixed, please. Also, send me a DG email, and I'll try and get things straightened out.
