Planting and designing memory gardens

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

Hi - I went to the memory gardens forum and they jumped all over me 'cause I asked them anbout their forum...So I hope this is a place to ask questions? I am working on a memory garden for my son who died two years ago, and I'm sure there are lots of other gardeners here who have this same idea. Is there a forum to share ideas, etc. about this or could we start one?

Hi Caitlin!! Welcome to DG btw. The Memory Garden forum was recently started to be a place to remember fellow DG'ers that have passed on. I can see now, especially for someone new, that the forum name might be a bit mis-leading.

I do not personally have a Memory Garden, but my mom is creating one over the last couple of years to memorialize my grandparents (her parents). My grandmother, in particular, was an avid gardener and so Mom has tried to plant things my grandmother loved. The area she put it in is shaded except for morning sun so she's going with a lot of ferns, columbine, hosta and the like. She did put in a Paul's Glory hosta as my grandfather was Paul. I think a lot of people do similarly in that they put in plants that the loved one liked or that have some connection to their name. She put in a garden plaque with the common verse of "Gone Yet Not Forgotten". You see them all over the internet. Last year she put in a grieving angel which was very beautiful.

I think Mom consciously selected a shady spot for her garden as it was a more serene and calming environment. A good place for reflection and remembering in peace.

Good luck with your project!

P.S. If you've not heard it discussed here we are having a plant swap/get together in Des Moines next weekend (May 6-7th). We'd love to have you there if you're able to make it. Here's a link to the announcement. There are also food/attendance, hotel arrangements, and plant trading threads separate from this one.

Thanks, Brenda
The swap meet sounds great - maybe next year. And I will check out that site for a thumb-sucking angel - which is what I am looking for - I saw one in someone else's memory garden, but haven't had any luck finding one. What would be the best forum to post an inquiry about that in? You are coming to Des Moines from Kansas?

Hmmmm....I've not ever seen an angel like that and I'm always on the lurk for angel statues for my yard. I collect angels and fairies.

There is a Garden Art forum here that might be the best place to start.

But Garden Talk is also a good place for general garden design, fertilizing and the like.

Yep...I'm driving from KC to Des Moines. I know there are also folks from Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois coming too.
