Canadian Trading Forum or ???

Mississauga, ON(Zone 6a)

OR what about "Canadian Forum"

There's something here that is elluding me, but just can't quite put my finger on it.

I would like to see a name that indicates Canada without it being over-whelming or mushy..

Are you changing your vote above Joan? We have approximately 140 members who could change the above posted numbers.....I put the cut off date as May 7 so that those that don't visit too often would also have a chance.

Lillypon, not changing my vote, just pondering out loud. I want a name that is comfortable for all Canadians.

Joan

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

A name that's comfortable for all Canadians....I wanted that too.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

That might be difficult to accomplish......it's a very rare group vote that has 100% agreement between all concerned.

edited to say for good or bad I think we should stick to what has already been posted. I believe we should present Dave with the wishes of the majority vote. As time goes by another vote could take place.....nothing here is written in stone.

Lilypon
I'm wondering if you are a regular contributor to the forums or are you someone in authority here on DG?

Being a relatively new member, I would like to have any information possible.

Thanks so much,

Joan

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

No I'm not in a position of authority (I have been a contributing member for a couple of years).... a deadline usually has to be set, both for suggestions and a vote. This was started because people have been complaining for a number of years about the title of our forum. It can be laid to rest or sent to Dave for consideration. Usually someone, unfortunately, has to take the bull by the horns to make a change.

edited to say normally people go straight to Dave with a suggestion or an idea and post it in his forum and then if a certain amount of people agree with their idea Dave either Ok's it or turns it down. I don't think I've seen a vote done here before but I thought it would give Dave an idea of what the majority would like the *Canadian Trading Forum* forum named.

I like the idea of presenting him with some of the legwork already done.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

good for you Pam for getting this organised. I agree that Dave will look at it more seriously when he sees the prep work already done. Thanks all you who have let your opinions be known, it helps.

Medicine Hat, AB(Zone 3a)

I wote for Blooming Canada, eh! It's Canadian, eh!

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Just like fingernails on a blackboard...

No offense, Brenda. I just have too much family in the States that just love to bug me...eh!

Canadian Gardeners sounds good to me as well.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Both Dave and I are keeping an eye on this thread for the vote outcome, and we're happy to change the name on this forum when some sort of consensus is reached.

Please remember the forum's genesis was in trading (because there are some snags in trades between Canada and the US), and even with a name change, intra-country plant and seed trades can still be arranged here.

With that in mind, do you want to maintain a reference that feature within the name? If so, what about "exchange" - which conjures up both an exchange of information as well as a barter or swap of some sort.

Canadian Exchange
Canadian Garden Exchange
Canadian Gardeners (Gardening) Exchange

Just a few more ideas (not to throw a kink into your voting, though!)

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Thanks for your interest as well as your input, Terry. :)

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I appreciate your input too, Terry! Personally I'd rather get away from the "Trading" aspect altogether. Our forum is only rarely about trading. I'd submit that the genesis of the forum, while important, is outdated and no longer the purpose of the forum - and, in fact, might even be limiting its perception among other DGers, Canadians included.

We're pretty much like the other regional forums that have been started lately, or like the European Forum, for example. Trading threads do get started periodically in our forum, and I don't think the name change will lead anyone to think that that's no longer possible. Besides, whenever I want to trade with someone in another country, I usually talk to them in the thread related to the subject at hand, and then through DG e-mail - I wouldn't be looking for a "Trading" forum as such.

JMO - I'd be interested to hear what others have to say. :-)

IMHO, we don't need the word 'exchange' in the name. If I were brand-new to DG and saw this word it would throw me.

Any actual exchanging could be (and probably is) done through other means (forums)

Joan

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I think the forum could be named whatever is voted upon but underneath the name it could say:

This forum was created for Canadians to discuss gardening related issues and it is also a place where Canadians can trade. Sending plants and seeds across the border can be a risky proposition and sometimes ill-advised.

Excellent point, Pam.

Right now it says that it's for us "to trade seeds and plants within one another." - which actually sounds somewhat painful to me! ;-)

North Saanich, Canada

This is all very confusing. I was just looking at all the different forums, and this forum is actually listed under TRADING FORUMS. Perhaps what needs to be done is we need to move to REGIONAL FORUMS and get rid of the "TRADING" status. At the moment, under Regional Gardening, there is California Gardening, Texas Gardening, and MIchigan Gardening. So perhaps Canadian Gardening could be added.

Just my 2 cents worth!!!

Glenda

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I agree, Glenda. And not to speak for Philomel et. al., but I've always wondered why the European forum wasn't in that section as well.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I agree, add my 2 cents here too. Makes perfect sense! Too much confusion the other way(s).

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

The reason this forum was in the trading section is because it was designed to be a trading forum. At the time it was implemented, DG was still relatively small, but our Canadian members felt it was difficult to sort out where someone was located when they offered their plants or seeds in the main trading forums. They wanted their own forum to avoid having to decline trades across the border.

I realize it's evolved into more of a regional "general gardening" forum, but that's why I suggested what I did - and why it's currently located where it is ;o) We can move it when a new name is chosen.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

That would be terrific Terry. It's true, with Dave's Garden gaining such a huge membership over the years, The Canadian contingent has, as you put it, evolved into something far more complex than just trading. But I can understand why it was named as it was in the beginning.

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

Canadian Gardeners

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Canadian Gardeners is OK by me.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

I'm back on line with my own puter now and Canadian Gardening Forum is ok by me. I would lean toward one of the more colourful names but would probably be bored with it in no time. And I also agree that a concurrent request to move the forum to regional forums is in order. And the hockey game ended the correct way too - right on canucks!!!

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Welcome back, Lynn. :)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Canadian Gardening has my vote.

Right now the tally is:

Canadian Gardeners= 20 votes
Canadian Gardening= 11 votes
Blooming Canada= 2 votes
Canadian Corner= 1 vote

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

So are you in agreement the voting process has concluded? If so, I'd suggest we go with Canadian Gardening. Even though it was the second choice by popular vote, it would be in keeping with the other regional forum names (Texas Gardening, California Gardening, etc.)

I don't think we'll run into any problems with the CG site by the same name, but if we do encounter a problem, we'll deal with it from an administrative standpoint then - and we'll know if we have to fall back on Canadian Gardeners, it is/was a popular choice ;o)

I really appreciate y'all taking the initiative to act on this issue on your own accord. Oftentimes, problems are dropped in our laps without any suggestions on what we can do to fix them. We certainly don't mind taking on those tasks, but it's a refreshing change of pace to have a solution provided along with this request!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I think it's over.......thank you Terry.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Whoo Hoo...Canadian Gardening has a wonderful ring...doesn't it? Thanks Terry and to Pam for organizing the vote.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It looks fantastic.....thank you sooooooooooo much for the wonderful write-up Terry!!!!!!!! ά

Whee Ha! Great new name! Now we can do more than trade ... lol.

Many thanks to all.

Terry I can't find any source at the library to confirm however that Pulsatilla patens was chosen as our National Flower. The official Government documents here at the library don't have it listed nor does the Government of Canada website: http://www.canadianheritage.gc.ca/progs/cpsc-ccsp/sc-cs/index_e.cfm

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

According to the Geobopological Survey, Canada doesn't have a national flower.

Quoting:

NORTH AMERICA

United States—The rose was officially adopted on November 20, 1986.

Canada doesn't have a national flower, but the rose is commonly used on emblems as a symbol of England, while a stylized lily, or fleur-de-lis, represents France.

Go figure...

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I corresponded with Lilypon when she spotted the error. Apparently each province has its own flower (similar to our state flowers here in the U.S., and a few sites/sources erroneously listed it as "the" official flower of Canada, rather than Manitoba ;o)

I've removed the national flower reference altogether and apologize for not researching it more fully beforehand.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Thanks to Lilypon and Terry.
I love the new name.

Cheers,
Carol
