Stunning tree, Kell. I love it!

I am with you Kell. I only go for Urban camping.....a soft bed, hot shower, and bathroom with a door.
Awesome plant even if it goes with the pepto color theme.
Mel

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

well I checked out the plant WHAAAAA too expensive for me over $130 with postage, I can get a whole yard full of Brugs (from friends) for a lot less LOL and with my luck it would die.

I guess if you have been dissed, I have too!!!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I went out this morning looking for osteospermums and came home with a tree. I sat down to google it and it took me right to this thread. Now, I need another 30 ft tree like a hole in the head but I couldn't walk past this tree. I had completely forgotten about this thread or the name of the tree but I swear, it followed me home. So I get to keep her. Now I just have to get it planted before dh comes back from California. " I swear honey, it's always been there in the middle of the lawn.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Liz, it will be beautiful where you are located. You live in a paradise by the water. I bet DH will fall in love with it also!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Don't tell us you paid the same price or more!!! lol lol

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Here's one that isn't so expensive http://www.songsparrow.com/2005new/plantdetails.cfm?ID=1769&type=

Isn't it gorgeous, Kell it really is. This is on my want list for sure. Does it get really big? Or more Wide than tall is what I mean? Beautiful!!

Hugs
Julie

I read it's from the sycamore tree family...I don't know how to spell LOL

now Julie.... how big a hurry are you in. Hmmm?
FF is about to send a 5gal tree to me.
However... if you want a bunch then wait till next year or this fall. They'll definitely be on my winter tree seed crusade. Angelgrove Treeseeds has them listed but are out till the next good harvest. Maples should be easy to start.

http://www.forestfarm.com/search/closeup.asp?PlantID=acps680

zone 4-9 that takes any soil and laughs at salt spray? Sounds like a good street tree up here where they salt streets in the winter.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Blaine, make sure you get the variegated variety if you want this one.
Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Eskimo Sunset’.

I am sure Liz it will be spectacular in your garden. I love this so. Every day I look at it and it makes me very happy that there is such beauty in this world. The new leaves are as pretty as the old ones. It is too sunny now, but I took a picture anyway. I just couldn't lug it to shade to take the pic.

That picture makes me smile to just look at it Kell. It's beautiful.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

That is a beauty Kell! I am still amazed at this line of yours -
"My husband had sent me out to go nursery hopping, I was under orders not to come home for hours. "
Can he teach that to my DH? LOL! The other day I said I was running to the grocery store but I made a round about side trip to Navelet's, just to check for coleus & get those Abulitons. He never noticed the new pots by the front door, used to seeing them everywhere I guess. Not that he doesn't appreciate the garden, he was BBQing the other day and I caught him sitting in the chair on the patio just staring at the garden, said he really liked how lush it was. All that rain helps!
And the mention of Fort Bragg & Mendocino, we are in need of a weekend get away and had just talked about this, we haven't been up there in so long and the wine tasting on the way is great too. Of course, I didn't tell DH about all the nurseries I want to visit while there, all in due time. :-) he should know me by now though!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Blaine, I couldn't ask you for this. You are so kind and giving. Bless your heart, you always think of other's. (((hugs)))

Julie

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

very true Kell - there's actually a number of variegated sycamores. It's wild how these types of variegation came in to being. I think Mother Nature was doing a little recreational chemicals the day she was designing these trees. :)

I don't actually have room to let something like this be a full tree. It'll either have to be penjin (sp) or as so many others, I start and/or grow them on in pots for a couple of years then find them a good home.

Wait till my tree seed source gets their harvests in. Heh,heh... guess 2006 will be the year of the sycamores

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sue, he normally would never say such a thing. But I was such a sad sack, he was trying to cheer me up. He sure regrets it now. I haven't stopped. LOL.

Blaine, I will have to keep an eye out for seeds. I never have noticed seeds on my Japanese Maples though.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Here ya go...I had to look cos' I do have some dogwood tree's and I would LOVE love love to have them everywhere I turn lol! I just love them. Looks like the maples are pretty simple...just takes time is all :-)

I don't have the patience to go through lots of stratifying exercises. I've ordered various Japanese Maples before and didn't get anything (or didn't even get around to starting !!) My seed starting is a winter-basement thing. But I also saw one of the gardening programs talking with some bigshot retired college coach down south and he was a J.Maple fan.... and he had volunteers!

Julie - do you have any Pagoda Dogwoods? Got room to grow out a couple of youngsters?

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL Blaine then he cheated eh? lol...AND he's retired so he has all this time plus someone to help him experiment! Deligate and designate!!! Well...it really takes alot of time to get a tree and everytime you go down to the local store and see one standing there tall and pretty with blooms already,,,,you wanna just go toss the seeds LOL! I'm not a real die-hard tree-seed starter but I may dabble just to see if I can do it...it's a challenge I guess lolol...knowing me, I'll forget it's there anyway. :-)

Looking up Pagoda Dogwoods......http://greenwoodnursery.com/page.cfm/19982

Ummmmmmmm YES I DO!!!! Gots lots of room!!!!

Is that it? It's beautiful...but I think it's www.greenwoodnursery.com/page.cfm/19982.....see if this one works..duh me!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Well,I got on a waiting list for Eskimo Sunset from FF,unless I wanted the big one, they said small ones may be available this fall

I did get Acer pseudoplatanus variegatus ( generic variegated sycamore I guess)
Its leaves are gorgeous, just gotta find a good spot for it

Do these like water like sycamores do?
Ya know how the grow along stream banks?

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

From what I've ready CC, they are part of the sycamore family, and the perfect setting would be underneath a tree in shade and they require water and acidic soil. Guess that's why my dogwood is planted underneath and inbetween a huge pecan tree and Cypress tree. It's doing great in that spot. I love that layered look in a landscape though. Beautiful!

Oh and I read they thrive around the Mississippii River...here it is

Large, dark greened, glossy leaved Pagoda Dogwood, with its showy, aromatic, clustered, tiny white, spring flowers appearing in May. In summer, the blue-black fruit on red pedicles held above the layered foliage is an impressive sight and persists for about a month. The Pagoda has unique horizontally layered branching that makes it a true specimen in anyone’s landscape. Its attractive early purple fall color gives this plant multi-season interest in the landscape.

The Pagoda Dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) is a native plant that grows from the Mississippi River east from Zones three to seven. It grows in woods, thickets and on rocky slopes where it forms a small clump tree. It has been cultivated since 1880 and it is the only hardy dogwood tree in Minnesota. Although it grows naturally as a multi-stemmed shrub, it is commonly found as a single-stemmed tree about 25-feet high with a spread of about 20-feet.

Pagoda dogwoods grow best in cool, shady areas and prefer moist, acidic, well-drained soil. They are known to be very drought sensitive and decline when grown in hot, dry sites.

A good home landscape site would be under a large tree with other shrubs and perennials. The result will be an ornamental tree pleasing to the homeowner’s senses and a good source of food for the birds.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

That's the girl! The horizontal layering is too cool if you have room orrrrr you can keep it whacked to a smaller proportion and use a little selective pruning to accentuate the horizontal scaffolding. I think 3 or 4 seedlings still hanging around from last year. Stupid bunny thought he found a Chinese buffet and topped them but they're all leafed out and growing. I've got your addy and will see about sending a couple down Sat a.m.. Gotta go send a couple of Water or Chinese Red birches to Moonlighter as well.

edited: I double checked my FF order and found I had selected the wrong variety in my excitement. I just called FF who did the switch, said the surcharge probably won't apply and it'll ship early next week!! whewwww

Here's what UPS dropped off yesterday afternoon.
Definitely an eye catcher. My neighbor across the street who has been saying 'NO MORE TREES' came over. Next thing you know he was writing down FF's address then brought his DW over later... with a flashlight since it was now dark and the tree was already planted.

Mine looks alot like that except it does not have the pretty color on the back of the leaves
and its much tinyer(is that a word?)

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

The Variegated Sycamore Maple is green and white (read your tag).
'Eskimo Sunset' has the maroon back and the top is pale pink wash as well.

You've still got a cool tree. I saw that when ordering the E.S. and it's on my short-list.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WOW Blaine, that is fantastic. How much did it cost you to ship it?

CC, I love yours too even if pinkless. LOL. I can just see these adorning your property!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

plant = $25.00 + ship = $39.00 Total - 64$
I thought there was a surcharge for the 5gal size but when I called to confirm I had ordered the correct one, the surcharge didn't apply. I like it!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm on the waiting list for the "small" eskimo
This is just the generic.....to hold me over and see if I kill it

don't have any room in the ICU.....

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

It's beautiful and I found that the color gets better the more light it gets. The pink and burgundy tones are fabulous on the new leaves. I can't walk past mine without touching it. lol

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I still can't see where it is listed for sale on that site, Blaine.

I agree Liz, it catches my attention every time I walk by it.. I admire it!! I have to have a 40 year old apricot dug out and then I am going to put this one there.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

It's totally gorgeous, kell! Great find! 8ftbed, your's looks great to! Whenever you have any seeds could I get on the waiting list to? Liz how long have you had yours? Did you get it in Canada? I wonder if I could get it to survive here?
:) Donna

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

That's really pretty Blaine, I found FF, I think lol...I was really surprised at all the different varigated types of Maples they have. Gorgeous tree for sure. Enjoy! Good to see you again :-)

kell - maybe they've taken it off their inventory. I went in and manually searched and Brugie's link above takes me to the same acer group. Maybe they're out now and have pulled it so people would quit calling and/or ordering anyway. See what you caused? :)

Donna - I'll keep you in mind and hopefully their germination rate is not like the Japanese maples. . My tree seed source is Angel Grove seeds.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Thanks, Blaine.
:) Donna
