Hi all, been gardening all day. A little of this, a little of that, until I finally ended up doing a major cleaning out of the River Birch bed. All it needs now is some mulch, and it will be set for summer. It's a good day when you come in at dusk and the knees of your work pants are filthy! :-)
Mary Lee, for the diary, go to the very top of the screen and click on the tab that says "Journals". It takes you to a screen that gives you the choice to "Manage your own garden diary" or to "View other garden diaries." It also gives you those choices for the Journal.
The great thing about the diary is that it really is very easy (even I can do it!) Its much like adding new threads to forums, only it is your own forum and each "thread" is referred to as a "tab". You have the option of making each tab either public or private, the default is public. Once you have named a tab, you just "add a new entry" (menu is on the right-hand side of the page), and you post - including pictures - just like you post to threads on the forums! You can also alter the date of the post, so if you want to add something that happened a while back, just change the date of the entry.
Here's Donna's: http://davesgarden.com/journal/d/m/dstartz/
Here's mine(remember, it's still a work in progress!): http://davesgarden.com/journal/d/m/maggiemoo/
Let me know how it goes, I'm interested in what you're doing (you can tell us how you made that trellis!) and how Tom's grapes are coming along.
Central TX RU 4/23 "afterglow"
Aw c'mon, yours is a great example!
Can we go back and forth on the public/private aspect?
John
How do you mean back and forth? Change the public/private selection back and forth? Yes. But it would be the whole "thread", or tab that is either public or private, not just certain entries on the tab. I figure that anything I want to be private I will simply put on the same tab.
OK.
Okay, I'm looking forward to seeing some more diaries....
Yea! Dave added the ability to "watch" tabs in the diaries, just like we can watch threads.
Well, where are your diaries?? We all have a lot to learn from each other.
Maggiemoo, I clicked on journals and then on "manage your own diary" and what appeared on the screen was dstart's diary. I'm very confused. There were no directions, and I didn't see anything about tabs.
htop, I think my spicy jatropha developed legs and walked off. It's not uncommon for me to not see things that are right in front of my face, but Tom couldn't even find it. Would it be possible to mooch another one? If that's possible, I will plant this second one right away in a really big pot that won't be so likely to walk away. If you don't have one right now, then maybe in November?
I think my mystery iris came from Kathleen.
Donna, are you still going to that Daylilly show? or was it daffodils? I wish I could go, but there's no way to do it this year. I took pictures of the trellis, but I don't know how to post pictures so you'll have to wait till Tom can do it tomorrow.
Mary Lee, I don't have any more spicy jatropha that are not promised to other people and I probably won't be taking cuttings from the mother plant for quite some time. The one I gave you was in a small container and the leaves were 3 lobed like the top ones in this photo:

Hopefully, yours will find its way back. I might have some cuttings started in November, but I am not sure. I just bought one that is a dwarf (compact) spicy jatropha that is not supposed to grow over 4 feet tall and wide. I hope it is a true dwarf and not a plant that has been dwarfed by the addition of growth hormones which eventually wear off.
OK... here is the trellis. We sunk the two end poles about 2 feet into the ground. The top and pottom horizontal poles are bolted to them. The rest of the cross poles are screwed to wherever there was contact. Its a little difficult to see, but one branch sticks out at the far right top corner. Want to put a hanging basket there. Now for the rose to hurry up and cover the thing!!!! Tom
What a really great trellis. It is beautiful with nothing growiing upon it. Very artfully done.
I picked the two cross poles... ML picked and placed the other poles. BTW... I think I figgered out the diary thing. Now for ML to catch on... stay tuned for further updates... Tom
Way cool trellis! I agree with Donna, it's a piece of art all on it's own! What kind of wood did you say it is?
Sorry you're having trouble with the diary. For some reason, that very same thing happened to me: would click to manage my own diary, and end up looking at one of Donna's tabs! It seems like I had to erase my cache or cookies or something to get her diary to clear. (Donna, your diary really wants to be read!! :-) )
We used juniper branches from Donna's place. Picked them up at the RU. They have enough of them to make trelli (is that the plural of trellis?) for all of DG!!!
Were those the branches they were burning? I thought those were cedar or mesquite or something (I really do not know trees!)
Junipers are a relative of cedars.
Aaahhhh! (lightbulb goes off in head)
Oh-oh, does that mean a migrain is coming?
Yes, is it painful?
:-)
:-)
:-)
You guys!
Does a polar sleep in the snow?
I will keep my mouth shut this time.
You were thinking about that other bear saying?
We finally discovered something about the diary thing. If I use Internet Explorer and click on "manage your own diary" I get dstart's diary. If I use Mozilla, I don't get dstart's diary. Just a little strange! So I'm using Mozilla from now on. I need to read some other diaries first.
htop when you get around to it, or when it's possible I would really like to have a cutting of your dwarf Jatropha. In the meantime we will keep working on this mysterious disappearance.
Everything else is doing great. The brug has about 10 buds on it. I use this stuff called Agrispon. It's an organic biostimulant. It should be interesting to see the results.
I do like our trellis, but I almost don't want to cover it. It's too neat. But the mess behind it is not so neat. We put this trellis and flower bed there to hide the mess.
Mess or no mess, that is a beautiful trellis. Don't give the roses the biostimulant, and maybe it won't be completely covered?
Mary Lee, I don't know when I will be pruning my dwarf jatropha, but I will keep you in mind when I do. I won't be trimming the regular size one back until the fall.
I start my new job on monday. Keep me in your prayers as I really need this to work out.
George in San Antonio
George, you will be in my prayers.
Ditto!
AMEN George, so glad you found something so fast. :-)
htop... you have mail
So happy for you, George! I know it's tough starting a new job - new dynamics, new relationships, everything. I'm certainly praying for you and your family.
You'll be a real success, George. There will be many in your prayer group. I will ask that this opportunity turns out to be better than ever.
Well, we just returned from visiting with htop in SA. We took her stakes to her and then we went had steaks for supper. Very good meal! Thanks a bunch. She has some beautiful flower beds. No surprise really. She's a gardener after all and gardeners always know what to do with good rich dirt.
Very cleverly put, Mary Lee. I received my stakes (thanks ... so kind of you to deliver them to me) and you guys received yours. :o) I enjoyed visiting with you and Tom. I had 2 disappointments. One was that I forgot to take your photos and y'all looked so nice with your blue blouse and Tom's blue shirt. I kept telling myself to go fetch the camera and then I became so wrapped up in the "plant talk" that I forgot all about it until we were already on our way to dinner. The other one was that we couldn't chat longer. I am glad that you two had a safe trip home
Sounds like that was fun. Wish some of you guys were closer to me.
If any of you are ever driving this way and have time to stop, be sure to let me know!
Maggie, if we're ever headed that way, I will give you a holler.
