Central TX RU 4/23 "afterglow"

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

The 4/23/05 CTRU is over, and we had a great time! Hope everyone will post here - pictures and your experiences - for those who couldnt make it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to Donna and Ernest (DH) for making this happen, for giving us a great place to meet and talk dirt (and the things that grow in it)! You all need to know that Donna didn't learn her lesson, and is inviting us for another RU early November! She'll give you the details.

Apparently, in this picture, Donna is surprised by what she sees in this bag of seeds. :-)

(Sorry guys, all the pictures I got are not too complimentary, I'm just going with the flow. We were all flapping our jaws so much, I didn't get near the pictures I expected.)

Trois assumes the position.... of the typical DG person, trying to shoot a close-up of that tiny flower!

Kathleen (catbird8) is very animated as she tells us a story. Hazel (htop) and Bob (her DH) listen in.

Margie (loudigger) was all business up to the moment she stepped out of the car. Then it was all fun! Margie brought door prizes for all to enjoy (I walked away with some great stuff!) Thanks Margie!!

Tom (silverfuter's DH) and Barbara (Trois's DW). It was tempting to call them "DH" and "DW".

(edited to correct name) Oops! I'm bad at names when I'm tired...

A better picture of Trois (Trois). By the way, his name is pronounced "Troyce".

I have refrained from posting the pictures of people with their mouths wrapped around food, etc, because even after meeting you, I really like you!! ;-)

Donna and Ernest are probably on the road right now, heading back home. Hope to here from everyone soon, it was a lot of fun.

TamaraFaye, I hope everything went well for your mom, hope to see you next time.

Jester, we wondered where you were, so sorry to hear what happened (and I join everyone in prayers for you and your family.)

John, we really wished you could have been there, hope you can make the one in the 1st week of November.

Dave, Dave, Dave. Well, you did such a great job with the Gardening Diary, we'll let it slide, but we sure would have loved to have been the first to wear the new Dave's Garden t-shirts! (I ordered mine before I left.) :-)

Now, eveyone (not just those who attended) join in! Questions? Answers? Ideas?

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Oops! I guess they're already home!

Hugs to you Donna! Glad you made it home safely.

Here's the incomparable htop with the wealth of plants she and her darling DH, Bob, brought up from San Antonio.

One of the plant labels found at the swap. And for those that can't quite make it out, it's Latin name is "Some Kinda Iris"; it's common name is "Homeless-needs a caring family"

(If you ever get the chance, invite Katleen to one of your parties. She's a hoot!!)

When everything was said and done there were several orphans left behind.

Fortunately their mothers did leave notes attached. ;->

Donna, I will be very interested to see what's growing in that area in November. It may be a strange collection!

Trois, the pleasure was all ours. I hope we get to see you and Barbara again in Nov.

BTW Thanks for the photo above! I see it's time to buy some new shorts that are more in keeping with all the lost weight. < : - }

LOL!! This morning I found where someone left a large portion of well-seeded flowers behind.....

I'll see what I can do to help them along. ;->

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Wow, looks like a great time was had by all who went! Glad to know it is troyce, so much eaiser to say than "trwah"! he even looks like a Troyce!!!

Glad to hear there will be another in the fall.

My mother is thankful her heart doctor gave a green light for her knee surgeries. Esp since less pain equals lower blood pressure and more physical activity :-) Now another bridge to cross, scheduling the first surgery. Then I will know if I can go to Texhoma roundup...

Keep posting pictures, I will be watching...

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Wow y'all...this looks like a great time. My DH and I will have to attend the next one in November. It is great seeing pictures of all y'all...especially Hazel! She has been a huge help to me in the plant area. And some of you I recognize your names from the Tomato forum who have helped me a great deal. Sorry we missed out on the fun. It was a busy weekend: my bday, my DH had to move a friend's 850lb gun safe, I had to plant my maters, DH had to plant our new beautyberry. Thanks Maggiemoo and all of y'all for the pictures and the updates. Michelle

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

I guess I should have used a picture of a pretty flower as the 1st pic on this thread. Sorry Donna, for having that picture of you with your mouth in a perfect "0" as the "banner photo" for the thread (but you have to admit, it is pretty funny.) I almost used the one of Trois "assuming the position", since it was the first in-focus pic on my card, but I didn't want to do that to him. :-)

Michelle, we'll be so happy to meet you and your DH in November. There should be fewer "gotta do it now" gardening things going on at that time. One thing we thought about is that when we all go home with our new finds from exchanging plants, it will be the best time for planting perennials.

John, I hope you see that we took your suggestion to heart - having one RU in the Fall, so the other could be in the Spring. BTW, I also checked out your Crossvine this morning, it added some new leaves while was gone. I'll find a way to get it to you (before November), I promise!

Tamara, good news about your mom! I know that was a releif. We went through a number of scares with my mom last year.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Yes, I did! And, two fine traditions in the making.

As wonderful as you are, maggie, I forgive you.

So glad to hear all is well so far with your mom, Tamara. Hopefully this is an omen of things to come.

Happy belated birthday, Michelle! Look forward to seeing you and your DH in Nov.

Should have been careful about what you asked for, John. Now you have to be there in Nov. ;->

And speaking of that I've started a thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/503336/ about picking a date for the next CTRU. I would love to hear y'all's ideas!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

those are great pix, everybody. hopefully i'll be able to make the nov RU

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Yesss!!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

maggiemoo, I was wondering if you were going to post the one of Trois "assuming the position". It was kind of you not to do so, but it would have been sorta neat. That's how our neighbors usually see me. One told me that they thought that I was deformed and only had a backside for months after they moved in cuz that's about all they ever saw of me. Thanks for taking such great photos and posting them so quickly. I know that you had to be a bit tired after the trip, but you took the time to make this great new thread. Thanks for all of the great plants.

It was so great to meet everyone in person (I had had the pleasure of meeting Donna before) and my DH and I had such a great time. What super plants I obtained from you guys and what special people you all are. Thanks a bunch and especially for helping meunload my SUV and load it back up.

I was so sorry that I had to leave so quickly on Saturday because I wanted to vsit more with everyone. I went back on Sunday and was able to meet Kipper who has annointed me with a new name. Kipper, the zebra plant is so lovely and I sure will plant those columbime seeds from your beautiful plant. I only hope that I will be able to do as well with them as you have done with yours. Thanks for the suggestion to coolect seeds with a hand vacuum. I would never have thought of that. I had been wanting a star hibicus for a long time too. I will try to keep it thriving as you had done. I guess you will have to plant shade plants now in the new flowerbed that you made around the "dead" tree. I hope all the new plants do well in the great flowerbeds you have made in your yard. I know how much work it took to make them. Your store is fabulous and so unique. The antique displays are so beautiful. I woud love to come visit with you and see it in person one day. By the way, I guess you found out that I am no "goddess". My husband has another name for me that is not as complimentary. :o)

Thanks Donna and Ernest for all the hard work you did at your place in the preparation for the Roundup. Ernest, the brisket was the best brisket I have ever eaten. My husband said the same thing. Donna, I can't wait for the hibiscus bloom to open and I have found a spot for the honeysuckle. I hope it doesn't rain today so I can plant it. I hope the Lemon hibiscus prospers for you which with your talent at growing plants, I am sure it will. I think you will like the bloom color. I still feel bad that the surprise plant I brought you (the blue butterfly clerodendrum) had its stem broken right before the trip. It was the first cutting that I started in October. I had been so thrilled that it was going to bloom for you a few days after I gave it to you. Thanks for sharing the information about starting firespike by leaf cuttings. I will tenderly care for the ones you gave me. I had been looking for one that had a purple bloom for soooo long. I had to fight my brother who was trying to steal the pony tail palm. I won.

Margie, thanks for the all the preparation you made for the game. It was fun. We have already eaten the peas which my husband cooked in the new electric wok he had just bought ... delicious. When I received the "gag" gift I supposed everyone wondered why I kept them. I knew he would love testing out his new gadget as well as eating the results. My new necklace will bring back fond memories of the time we shared with you at the Roundup. I have it in my etagere. I think you brought the coleus. I had been wanting some for a large container and hadn't had the time to go buy some. The mints surely will be enjoyed., as will the Stella d'oro. I was happy to obtain the pink Obedient plant.

Trois, I enjoyed all of your stories about the big gator that is lurking about and I sure hope one of the children don't disappear. I really enjoyed talking about the snakes too. I have never seen one snake eat another one before. You ought to write a book about your adventures with the critters that inhabit your neck of the woods. You are a natural storyteller. But I don't mean a liar storyteller. I mean you make everything so interesting and fun to hear about.Tell Barbara that I said that she is are a very gracious lady. Trois, you are lucky to have her as your DW. Thanks for travelling so far to be with us. Maybe we will meet again and I will be able to chat with you both a lot longer.

Kathleen, you have such a great sense of humor. You sure made me chuckle a lot. I love your hair. I am so glad that you were able to join us at such short notice. You sure must have benn scurrying to get the plants ready that you brought. I liked the blooms you had there as samples. Your Phytostegia are at my place now. I was so happy you brought the
Montbretia, Crocosmia because I had seen a photo of them earlier in the PlantFiles and they were on my "to buy" list. They will look so good with my orange blooming bulbine. The Brazilian button bush is a really interesting looking plant.

Marylee, we'll be eating green onions and hopefully strawberries thanks to you. I had been planning on buying green onions. I cook with them a lot and eat them raw too. The rose scented geraniums will add some wonderful fragrance to my garden. I have been brushing against them already just to smell their heaveny scent. Thanks for the red globe geraniums. My brother took one of those before I could stop him. They wiil be a nice addition to my geranium collection. Tell Tom that the venison salami was delicious and that I ate far too much of it. I felt like a real pig, but it was so yummy. I reeeally wanted the stakes and was sad that they wouldn't fit in my SUV, especailly since nice Tom had cut them for me. But, hey! that's an excuse for us to get together when you are in San Antonio and we can go to dinner ... my treat! Let me know when you guys will be in town. Thanks for all your help as I reloaded my SUV.

This was one of the bet times I have had in a long. long time. Thank you all for being such great people. For those who couldn't make it. We missed you. Maybe next time we'll have the pleasure of your company.

:o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) o) :o) :o) ) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o)
