29 degrees tonight ... Will they make it ?

Worden, IL(Zone 6a)

8ftbed. I know I started my tomatoes too early. I had just gotten a greenhouse in February and was just dying to start some seeds. But I do live in southern Illinois, and until this past weekend, we have had pretty good weather. Finally the wind has settled. I only moved my brugs to the front porch just in case I need to drag them back in again....Back breaking work :-(

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

mine still are covered. its still cold here and now calling for rain. i have a black trash bag flying around too.

went to a garden show over the weekend. a freind who owns a nursery made a cool looking tent to show the flowers he sells under them. well saterday night during rain winds and hail the tent took to the sky. havent see it since.

three crepe mrytles around town were blown over . and my poor camellia has a bag over it because it is now naked. all the new leaves are gone. got the ice storm in jan and feb so now started to put leaves back on and those are gone.

where is the warmth??? hehe

my tomatoes are outside today with the peppers hoping will be okay. already have flowers.

8ftbed you are a sweet heart. But after you finish using the pillowcase just toss it in the nearest trash bin. I wouldn't want you to ship it with my P&C, because I couldn't do that to my postman.

After the wind tossed and turned some of my Brugs around Friday, I did bring them in the house to recoup. But I noticed today that 3 of them are starting to 'Y' where they broke off. Is that normal for them to do that after being stressed out by the wind and breaking of some stems? They are already starting to put on new leaves. These Brugs are strong little critters aren't they? They can wilt down to where you think they are going to die, water and they look good as new. The wind plays heck with them and they just come back for more. I love them.

I can't believe it there is no wind at all today. It did start raining about 2am this morning and it is still raining, you now the good kind, the slow soaking type.

Worden, IL(Zone 6a)

Send that rain my way please!!!!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

It has gone somewhere, the sun is out now, don't know for how long. Let me know when you get it.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

We have it now. Beats getting snow. LOL!

Worden, IL(Zone 6a)

Raining now. Another cold spell coming our way but only getting down into the high 30s, so everything should be fine. Supposed to be cooler than normal the next 10-15 days -HECK!!!! :-( Bring on the warmth....

Send some warmth, would ya! LOL

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

another frost warning for tonight........ : - (

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

My temp. gauge says it is 45 here today, but it feels like about 32. It is suppose to get to 32 tonight. We do have a freeze advisory for tonight. Can you believe it's the end of April, and Sunday is the 1st of MAY.

When I got home from town today around 2, I went ahead and covered the tomatoes, green peppers, and covered my EE's that I planted and also covered my hardy hibiscus that are starting to come through the ground. The last time it got down to 32 it got the leaves on my Rose of Sharon's, Crape Myrtles and my Magnolia tree. But I am hoping they will come back if and when ever the weather warms up and stays warm.

What will probably happen is we will have to turn off the heater then have to turn on the AC the same day. That is Kansas for you.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Even with the sun today that cold wind of the lake wasn't fun. It was supposed to be cloudy and in the 50's so I left the hoophouse closed. Came home at 2:30 and it was 94' and a couple of brugs made it clear they needed a bigger pot. Even though I watered yesterday and last night 2 were wilted like they hadn't seen a drink in a week.

Worden, IL(Zone 6a)

Not again :-( This weather is getting pretty depressing. Where's the sun????? and some warmer temps. vs71009 -I hate to hear about the frost advisory. That means we will get it for tomorrow night. Wish you would just keep it there! LOL. I guess I am dragging in once again. Will I ever learn -probably not!

Cindy

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I give up on dragging stuff in. It may frost, but it won't kill the plants, so I'm taking my chances. 34 here tonight. This is getting old. Good luck to you all. Maybe this will be our last bout with cold weather in the Midwest.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Good luck all. I've sure drug mine in and out a lot this year. It's gets old after awhile. LOL

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

When do you all have time to count how many you have? I don't have that many fingers and toes.

Worden, IL(Zone 6a)

I sure hope you are right brugie. I am getting sick of this too. The weatherman said that by next weekend we should be back to normal 50s to 70s. I am sure that is true since the weatherman is never wrong. We ALL believe the weatherman....LOL.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Up here, we're behind 3+ inches in rain. Weatherman pointed out the last time this happened was 95 and the summer turned into brutal hot with that 3 day string of 100 and humidity that killed hundreds of people in Chicago. 500 or 800 I think.

Once again, the storm has dodged us. Nary a drop of rain from this last system that slid through.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

We badly needed rain here, but we got 'we don't know how many inches' yet, in a very short period of time, along with twisting winds that damaged plants, trees and shrubs. I do not know why, at my age, that I'm always surprised by the weather. It is certainly not freezing here, but it is chilly. The plants loved the rain, but the wind and falling tree limbs took our pretty spring garden and made it look like it has been vandalized. It will take a couple of days to get it cleaned up, assuming the wind and rain stop, and it should recover quickly and continue to grow, like Brugie said, bigger and better.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Brugie I am like you, I am about to put out all mine regardless, funny thing is the unnamed ones I had, all about 15" tall that I left outside are doing as good, or better than ones I brought in and it has been pretty cold in the low 30s but I don't think we will get freezing weather any more.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

SherryLike, we had your storm about a week ago and last night we had another but the winds were not as bad.

Good Luck every one, we've worked too hard to keep them alive to give up now.

Oh, Judy, I'm really sorry it hit you too!!! Your place is lovely and I've really enjoyed your photos. Your house is super, I really like it...

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Got to go outside and uncover my plants to check out what damage I may have gotten. The frost was sure heavy on the patio. Come on warm weather it has finally reached 50 degrees right now. I'm out the door.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I still have my brugs inside the house. The weather has been toooo crazy here to trust it with my babies.

I just fed everyone, looks like the cold was pretty bad,may have lost TS,but other then that, not too bad.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Mine looked okay this morning. I don't know how cold it got, but they were predicting the frost for the western part of the state. I sure hope it is all over now. I'm ready to garden.

Remember, if the frost does some damage, it doesn't mean they are going to die. I've had them totally defoliated by frost and in a week or so the leaves are jumping out of the stems. I hope everyone's plants are okay.

I am going to do it once and for all next Thursday or Friday. I can't take looking at them anymore with their leaves pressed up against the glass, begging for fresh air.
I have to keep battling the mites and the whiteflies too, so after reading this thread I think what's the difference?...losing leaves to the bugs or to the frost?
The benefits of the daytime fresh air & temps has to better than the stuffy indoors.
LOL
Thanks everybody for the advice.

I have one brug that I am taking in and out because during the winds we had a couple of weeks ago it fell over and all the soil came out and I just went ahead and replanted it in a 10 gallon pot. It is my Strawberry Creme. It had almost lost all its leaves and now they are starting to come back. I did notice after by Brugs went through the trauma of the wind, they are starting to Y now. Some of there leaves still look tattered, but new ones are coming back.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Some of mine I started calling "Naked Brugs" because they lost all their leaves to the really bad storm. They are now starting to leaf out again. Insects and storms can knock these babies down but they fight like the dickens to get back up.

What really gets me is that it's bad enough to have holey brugs because of bugs, and it REALLY miffs me when I get wind, stick, limb holes in otherwise very nice brugs. Only thing better about most of the storm damage is that it generally happens in layers, and I often have one row, all the way around the brug with wind/storm holes and the rest of the leaves looks nice, know what I mean??!! I have some dressed in their undies too, Judy!
