29 degrees tonight ... Will they make it ?

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

I moved all my brugs out of the basement a couple of weeks ago ... the temps have been 40 or more degrees but tonight it's suppose to dip down to 29...... Do you guys think my brugs, bananas and Bird of Paradise plants would be ok if I just pulled them under the covered porch or should I move them all back into the basement/house....?

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I had all my Brugs on the patio waiting to get planted, now they say we will have 32 and snow, I moved them all back into the house, after babying them all winter I sure don't want to lose them as they are getting buds

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm going to drag mine inside tonight. Last I heard we were only getting down to 32, but that would do it.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Valarie, I'm in the same predictment as you. I have 30 - 35 that I've planted that I'm thinking about digging back up today. I also have corn, beans, squash and tomatoes that will probably freeze.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Wind is honking out of the NE.
Temps got down about 30 last night. I was concerned.
HH with the little heater held in upper 40's as it has since I put it out there. I see condensation all over the insides but haven't opened up yet. I'm moving an oil filled radiator type out today (with a few snow flakes blowing around. Now I'm happy I got the HH up and was very lucky for a couple weeks of early summer like weather without rain. It let me get a couple of big projects done and beds prepared. Mail order plants started coming in this week so I was able to get those in. It'll be thermal coveralls today but I need to plant the daylilys that just came in yesterday. Then it'll be a cleanup, pot up day in the basement.

Brugie! Nice to see you back.

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

oh no ahelms.... actually that's worse - you have to dig back up...... I just have to drag mine in and out......

kareoke ....... SNOW ...... say it isn't so .......

Brugie...... I better get to draggin........

Thanks everyone...... I'm not sure why I thought I could get away with leaving them out.... guess I'm just to anxious for the warm weather and all the planting ....... I've already put some hostas in the ground.... and all my other plants have really taken off .... What I need is a big bubble over the entire yard....... LOL

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Shirley, we were posting at the same time. LOL We've had 70 to 83 degrees for awhile and now a freeze. I have bunches of Brugs in pots also that will have to be drug somewhere. After potting them up, they sure won't fit back inside where they were. I sent DH to pick up some cattle panels to make a tunnel and we'll cover it with plastic (if we can fight the winds enough to get it on) I'm going to hang a few heat lamps inside and hope that will keep them warm enough.

It's so good to see you back, Shirley. We really missed you.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Midwest weather sure is changable isn't it? Last week I had the airconditioner on. now the furnace. Sounds like at least another week of near freezing temps here in Nebraska.

Susan

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

snowing here as we speak...sobbb Dragged everything from the GH into the house. Left about 100 geraniums in the GH = gonna get some blankets out and drap them and hope for the best..........

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

ahelms.... I draped/tied plastic to scaffolding I've set up over my plants..... that seem to work ok last night but it was only 35 degrees..... that dipping below 32 is the killer....

The weather guy says if it stays windy the temp will stay up ...... so send me your wind 8ftbed.....

good luck everyone..... I better get out there and start moving things around

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Dang it's suppose to drop to 31 here tonight. Yesterday the forecast was for a 36 degree low .. too much work to do bringing them all back inside.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Yikes! I'm here in Buffalo, I'm glad that I didn't take 'em out yet, we're forecasted for snow tomorrow and Monday too, with temps hanging around 32 degrees...waaaahhh!
I hope you guys can get them protected or back inside easily enough!
This sure is kooky, but we had weather like this in the middle of May a few years back, so I try to stay patient.

Worden, IL(Zone 6a)

Going down to 28 (ouch). Draggin in also....Whew!

Cindy

Oh how I feel for you all with that cold weather headed your way!!!!
I have been repotting small cuttings into gallon containers and then the large CG into a W.Barrel this morning. We can still get freezing weather for at least another 3 weeks. So I'm not planting any permanent yet until I'm certain it's safe. The CG I will cover with a blanket if worse comes to worse.
Good Luck
P.S. I don't trust the Weather Person either!!! LOL

Thank heavens I only have two outside to drag in right now. What in the heck is trying to do to us? It is going to be 29 degrees can you believe 29.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

makshi same thing here with snow showers, BRRRRR and I was ready to PLANT some brugs, I have a lovely bud on my Isobelle, and two smaller ones, sure didn't want to lose those

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Man, it was hard not to grab a six pack and just hang out in the HH with the girls. I went in a second time a little after lunch, after working outside for awhile and almost wrecked the place. Quick, step in and pull the door shut and pffftttt! Glasses fogged up, couldn't see squat and took a step... booted the spare heater into the bench which I also grabbed onto. A couple of Paradoxa cone flowers and 3 Chinese Red birches went off the bench and into the water barrel.
We're having fun now and all girls in the HH no longer have virgin ears.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Yep! I try not to count on those "Weather Liars"! I have over 40 still inside. I haven't even thought about bringing them out yet, It's been nice the last week but we can still get down to 25 & most of mine are in 3 gallon & bigger, too large to be dragging in & out on a regular basis. Last year we had an early spring by 2 months, I was lovin that! Our usual last frost date is mid to late May, & I think it will go all the way this year. Rats! I wanna get stuff out there! Bj

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

8ft, I know exactly how you feel. lol lol lol

Predicted for last night was 30 degrees but I knew it would exhause DH and I if we tried to put all the plants back on the porch and reattach the poly panel, then have to take them back out again. Too many plants, too much energy being expended elsewhere, etc.

So I went to bed way early, got back up at 10 to check the weather again, the forecast had changed to low of mid 30's occuring at 6 am this morning. Up at 6 and the temp was 37.8, WHEW!!!

Are we crazy or what!!!

Judy

Oh that is sure good news Judy! I was feeling for all of you. I bet you had Nightmares about your cold spell. I just saw a post of snow in Ohio overnight. Now that is a NightMare.... Hope you don't have any further freezing forecasts. That can make one Crazy.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Gosh !! I really feel for all of you. We have been having nice weather up until yesterday here in the San Fran. Bay area. It is hard to imagine that it is still freezing and snowing in other parts of the country.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I covered my little Magnolia tree last night with a pillow case (which my DH said would do the trick, just something to keep the frost off) last night, got up this morning and removed the pillow case and the little sprouts that was starting looks a little mushy. Even my Crape Myrtle the leaves on it don't look to good. But the strawberry patch that is on the south side of the house about 4 ft away looks real good, and they were only covered with bed sheets. When my DH went out this morning to spray down the Iris's and my Live Forevers, he said the garden hose was froze. It said last night it was suppose to get down to 32. Now I wonder how long it stayed down to 32 or even lower. I did cover up my tomatoes and pepper plants with buckets and they look pretty good. All I can say is time will tell. Now tonight it is suppose to go to 42. Right now it is already 52. Then again Tues. it is suppose to go down to 35. When are we ever going to get above 50 at night and stay there?

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Well I sure was glad I brought all my Brugs back inside we got down to 29 last night with a little snow, that would have killed them for sure, now debating if I want to put them back out this week with forcast in the low 60s could go way down again.

Doris

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think I'm going to move my four flats of seedlings back out for a couple of nights and bring them back in Tues. My large brugs are in the garage and I have to move them to get the mower out, so they will probably say outside this time.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Looks like the two days of 30mph winds did more damage then the cold.
Poor Ruffles has seen better days.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Root, when you plant that close to the drive, do the brugs squeeze your auto space?? I ask because I want to plant in a very similar location and wonder how close I can go to the cement is safe. I guess I can always take cuttings on the troublesome side. The wind has ripped lots of mine too, but it hasn't been nearly as bad as last year.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

This spot is a little bed out front,I have such a small yard,I have to use every inch.
This brug is a sprawler,so I want it to be a bush form,I will whack on it as it spreads out.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Root, I have a bunch of plants that the winds did just like yours. We've had terrible winds for awhile and it's still blowing like crazy. I hope it settles soon so I can get the plastic over the makeshift shelters for the Brugs before the 32 degree temps get here. Friday evening before the storm, the winds were blowing so crazy, all of a sudden, you couldn't see anything. It was one huge dust storm and it lasted for awhile. Everybody was talking about the weird look that everything got. I've never seen anything like it.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Thanks, root. I have a little sliver between a concrete drive and a wooden fence, so it would be bordered and at least protected on one side and I'll just whack on it if it gets in the way...

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I had all my brugs outside and they were looking pretty good, until the wind got to them. Tore a bunch of them up. I have them back in the house now, I guess I will wait a couple of weeks, before I put them back out. This Kansas wind can do a job on things when it wants.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Ahelms- if you see any paper bags flying in the air - it is probably the ones that have blown off my brugs here in western upstate S.C. LOL

Worden, IL(Zone 6a)

Brought all brugs into house. Covered tomato plants and peppers. Covered strawberries and marigolds. Did not get any sleep worrying about all that stuff. In the end, I only lost 4 tomato plants -and I think that is because of this gosh-awful wind and not so much the cold. Only supposed to be 36 tonight so I hope I am safe (keeping fingers and toes crossed)

rootdoctor -poor, poor Ruffles -I know exactly how she feels.... :-)

Cindy

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

I feel like Ruffles too. My husband said "why are you so uptight today". I said , "I am a gardener...we have high wind and frost/freeze warnings.....do you have to ask ? !"
:)

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

cmalon - you had tomatoes out already? Maybe you're way down south. Shoot - I just started seeds on the 14th and now have the seedlings in the hoop house.

I've worried about brugs and wind since I fell in the brug-pool in Nov. I just didn't see how they'd get along here with all the wind. Especially all the dangling flowers. That's gonna drive me to drink... more!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Funny thing about brugs and the wind. They always come back bigger and better. This was last year. Becca Lynn lost most of her shoots and still came back and bloomed. We had lots of hail damage. The damage never left the trunks but it didn't take long and the leaves were all replaced.

Charlotte, I haven't seen any bags yet. LOL We sure have had some terrible winds and I hate the freeze warning. I've worked myself to death getting plants in under shelters and digging tender plants. I think we need to move further south. LOL

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I placed pillow cases out last night to cover some of my plants and have come up short 1 King size purple one with white trim. ahelms if you happen to see it blowing around just e-mail me please.

Linda

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

2pugdogs..... I think I saw your purple pillowcase blow by Osage City towards Kansas City late yesterday afternoon....... Maybe it will end up at RootDoctor's.......... LOL

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Ohhh, that's where that came from! One of my big rugosas put the snatch on it yesterday as it was sailing by and I was using it to tote some composted manure around. If you want, I'll try and wash it up and send it back to you with your Peaches and Cream.
The P&C by the way, went into a pot with it's roots this morning and I think I'll probably ship this weekend.
