RedRose, several years ago, I came in the back door, and there was a snake stretched out in front of the sink. I swear it was 6 feet long. Husband not at home of course, ran to get a neighbor, because I am so afraid of them, I would not attempt to kill them. When we got back, the snake was gone. My parents came, and my dad tore the house apart looking for that snake. Never did find it. Well for a week I lined up chairs or whatever I could stand on and be off the floor to walk from room to room. Never did see it again, don't know how it got in or how it got out. My husband was in West Virginia on business, I called him and asked him to come home so he could find that snake. Well logic should have told me that it would be gone by the time he arrived. Drive time about 8 hours. About 9 years ago, we built a new house on what was formerly a pasture. That first summer, we had so many snakes in the front yard, and on the front porch, I literally did not go outside. DH got a chemical to spread on the lawn, and it got rid of them. Haven't seen on in the yard since. DH says that they are as afraid of me as I am on them. Well they are scared creatures!!
Have any animals? If not, I'd get something. I'm more of a dog person, but many years ago when my kids were little, we lived in Tulsa on a creek. Kids started screaming one day, and I ran to see. I'll be darned if their cat didn't have a snake cornered beside the front porch. She wouldn't let the kids get near it or go up the step to the house beside it. Kept herself between it and them, about turned herself inside out hissing at them, and doing an about face to hiss at it. Scared me to death, because it was partially buried in some leaves, and it was rattling! I was a small child in southern New Mexico, I know what rattles sound like.
Fortunately DH was at home so I sent the kids away to get him. He killed it, and it turned out to be a rat snake. According to the book, they look like a rattler, and like to hide in dry leaves and use their tail in the leaves to make a noise mimicing a rattlesnake to scare off predators.
I'm NOT a cat person, but for the last 16 years, that cat has gotten gourmet canned food and a bowl of milk every day of her spoiled life. Who'd of thought a cat protecting the kids?
So Rose? Get a cat!

Yep I got the cat inside which she just got the baby kittens that she refuse to leave her babies and never leave that room.
Redrose, post this over on the Wild Life Forum. Most of those people over there, especially TROIS, deal with snakes and things all the time.
Cheryl, that is a remarkable web site!
I agree that having an animal is the way to go. I have two mini-Dachshunds and a BIG tom cat. I'm in the process of clearing out debris left by the hurricanes last year in my shade-garden-to-be. It involves a lot of hands on clearing in places I can't see. As long as my three "watch dogs" are with me I don't worry about what's under there I can't see, even the little lizards aren't safe! LOL
Pati
If you live in the country a guinea fowl is good for running off snakes and eating ticks. Peacocks also kill snakes with glee. I have learned to stay calm and shoot snakes with the .22 pistol, but it took me years to learn to that.
OH RedRose.. I hope you are alright by now. I know its scary to have snake in the house.
In 16 years of living on two different farms, I have only seen two snakes. Now DH sees black snakes all the time in the fields. They are good to have in the fields. One of our workers saw a snake last year wrapped around a tomato plant, but i've yet too (knock on wood!) I hate snakes, have nightmares about them and my MIL actually doesn't like to visit with us, because in her mind our house and barn are dripping with snakes, go figure!!! It's a good thing :) Hmmm, I should make up lots of snake stories to tell her, ha, ha... She also thinks that every tornado that touches down anywhere from Oklahoma to Florida must have surely destroyed our farm in its path and that we are hanging by threads after each one. We live in a berm home (underground home) and I told her we are safer than anybody; she won't listen and that keeps her away from us. Let me just say that she lives in the country in Massachusetts and has more snakes and lately, more tornadoes, than we've seen in a long time! Can we say dramatic?
Anyhow, snakes are not my favorite thing~!
Yes I am still kinda little scare so bought some moth balls and will put under everywhere to make sure the snake go away and my mother in law said she used to whole smash garlic to roll with cheese to make a ball to put old sock to put near by sink and icemaker in back icebox also all bathroom sink it help the snake go away hate that smell so I will use it both.
RR, when we first moved here...and had put our mobile home on land that had never had a home on it.....we had mice...DH got that foam stuff in a spray can and put it around every opening...like the plumbing under the sink...bathrooms, washer and dryer....
The other day my DGS drilled a hole for a new phone extension and I got 2 micce....back to the spray foam!
The reason I knew about the mice was because my Dashchund, Tessa, would jump up and bark around the closet area....I figured it was mice...so I set traps and got them. Jo
Thank RRunner so I will use spray foam .
So far I don't see snake anywhere it must be gone, I hope so.
Jo, what is the foam stuff? Specifically for vermin, or just for plugging holes?
If the first, only for rodents?
~'spin!~
It is just for plugging holes...you can get it in a can about like spray paint at Wal Mart or any hardware...it comes out in a yellowish foam...then sets up into a harden mass that encompasses the holes. under the sink...around any pipes going to the out side...like water pipes or electrical lines...even phone lines...does not deter the "sweet ants" in my kitchen in the summer though!! Jo
If that is the stuff that expands to fill the holes, squirt carefully! A little goes a long way. We used it where a wall in the basement was pulled up from the slab a couple of inches. Boy does it EXPAND!! I squirted it in the crack moving along as I squirted. It not only filled the crack, it came two or three inches out onto the floor!
But it sure stopped the field mice from joining us every fall.
Shoot, I was hoping it would work for the kitchen ants! Of course, they would just find another hole, they have all day (and night) and more bodies looking for ways in, and only lil ol' me trying to keep them out. But sounds like handy stuff!
~'spin!~
Mix boric acid with apple jelly and the ants will eat themselves to death. My mother is the one who used this and swears it works. Sit it somewhere safe since boric acid is harmful to many living things.
Judy
Thanks for the tip Judy...they are just now begining to move in on me...I've only seen two so far...but I think they were the "scouts" LOL
Yes...I did forget to say it expands a lot...have had to use a utility knife to trim some after it dried. Jo
I"ve had excellent results with a product called Terro. You can get it at Walmart, hardware stores, etc.. It cantains borax. Just put a few drops on a small piece of cardboard. The ants seem to come in droves, but in a day or two they're gone. I saw an ant in the kitchen today where a crumb was dropped so I'll probably have to use it again soon. Haven't had them for a good while.
I've used that ,Ginny...but had forgotten all about it....Thanks! But you know...it may be just a more expensive thing made from these home remedys. LOL Jo
You're probably right, Jo....although I saw it advertised in a hardware circular last week for 1.99 on sale. I'ts just so handy to grab the bottle and not have to mix up anything.
Terro works good but be very careful if u have kids. I've read it's poisonous. When I had my daycare, I followed the trail of ants, found where they were coming in - the patio door - and put a small circle of dishwashing soap around their entrance. NO more ants! They won't cross the soap.
Cool idea, Kooger!
