Julie Andrews

To commemorate her 69th birthday on October 1, actress/vocalist Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP.

One of the musical numbers she performed was "My Favorite Things" from the legendary movie "Sound Of Music."

However, the lyrics of the song were deliberately changed for the entertainment of her "blue hair" audience. Here are the lyrics she recited:

Quoting:
Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,

Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,

Bundles of magazines tied up in string,

These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillac's and cataracts and hearing aids and glasses,

Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,

Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,

These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak,

When the bones creak,

When the knees go bad,

I simply remember my favorite things,

And then I don't feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets, and corn pads for bunions,

No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,

Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring,

These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinnin',

Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',

And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,

When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache,

when the hips break,

When the eyes grow dim,

Then I remember the great life I've had,

And then I don't feel so bad.

Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over
four minutes and repeated encores.

I had heard she lost her voice a few years ago, and this confirms it.

Well, Dang! I usually check those things before I post but it sounded SO plausible...

Actually pretty sad, because of what happened to that marvelous voice.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

She hosted a Broadway Divas show for PBS about three years ago, and at the end of the show sang a few bars from a song from "My Fair Lady" with a Broadway actor. It was so wonderful to hear her voice again, and the audience was on their feet!

Darius, no matter who wrote or sang it....that's a keeper! LOL

Darius...no matter whether Julie recited it or not, it's definitely something she *would* have done. I've loved that lady since I first saw her on T.V with Carol Burnett. And it only got worse when I saw Mary Poppins. BRAVO to *whomever* wrote the words...and "Encore" for all of us who KNOW what they mean! LOL
:-D

It really is a cute poem!

I saw her interview on TV, I think it was with Baba Wawa... she told the whole story of the botched throat surgery, so very, very sad. I can watch her movies over and over!

kooger, I see you were a fan of Saturday Night Live too when they used the expresion Baba Wawa fo Barbara Walters. That's where I got the expression "Spousal Unit" for my husband.

Rosanna Rosannadana!!!!!!!!! ROLFLOL (I always thought that was the best SNL bunch - Jim
gilda Jane dan and the skinnny one just went blank on her name lol)

Meadows Place, TX(Zone 9a)

kooger, her name is Lorraine Newman......I had a visual crush on her.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

yup, that's it! lol

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Lorraine Newman was in the shark episode. Telegram? Candygram? and then she says, "Are you that nasty old land shark?" No ma'am, I'm a dolphin!! I can see that in my head and laugh anytime.

I used to babysit every Saturday night when SNL first came out and it was the highlight of my night watching that. :)

We should have a thread about SNL memories.

Oddly, I did not see the early ones with Chevy Chase. But I saw the ones with Steve Martin, playing that banjo with the headband that made it look like an arrow was stuck through his head.

Oh my gosh...I didn't know that about JA...How sad :(...she's one of my faves... :( poor thing, I feel very sad for her after reading the quotes from her about her lack of singing ability. It's a terrible feeling to lose things you love. :(
