What is up with this thread thing?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

It used to be that if I posted to a thread, and was the last one posting, nothing showed up as far as something new to the thread. Now, everytime I post to a thread, it shows up "new" to click it, but it's just my own post.

It's on a delay of up to 5 seconds. After 5 seconds go by, the new goes away.

I'm having that problem too on the threads that I am watching. It pops up top as a watched thread with a new post even though I was the one who added the new post. This has never happened before when I was the poster.

Dave explained it above your post.

I don't know what you did, but it looks like it is all fixed now. Thanks, Dave!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Okay, it is not fixed because it just did it again. So, if I'm understanding you right, I have to wait five seconds between clicking "Send" and clicking "Home" in order for it not to pop up again in my Watched Threads; right?

Correct. Or, put another way - by the time you go look at another thread or visit another feature on the site, the "new" should be gone ;o)

Thanks, Terry:-)

so if it still says new, that means someone else posted as well, so you ought to take a look (after the 5 seconds, that is).

Here is some extra information about the 5 second lag:

Prior to a few days ago, the system updated your thread information in real-time. i.e., when you clicked on a thread it would immediately record that.

Now, it stuffs those into a separate little queue and then every 5 seconds it goes through and takes all the entries in that queue and puts them into the real queue.

Since doing this, I have noticed a tremendous improvement in the performance of the server!!! I haven't seen any significant slowdowns in a couple days and I think it is largely related to this (and a few other minor changes).

When it helps with the performance of the server it is well worth it.

I agree with Karrie - if it's good for the server, it's a good thing.

The only problem I've encountered is when I was trying to shove about 500 images from the queue into PlantFiles early this morning, and they wouldn't send - it kept timing out. But I was able to finish it when I got home (1:00-ish, Central Time.) I'll try to not "feed" it such big bites from now on ;o)

Thanks for explaining that, Dave. Certainly, if it improves the performance of the server, that is a good thing. I type and click pretty rapidly so, if I add to a post, and it comes up again in my Watched Threads, I will just ignore it unless it comes up a second time.

I've just been hitting "Reload" on my browser. Usually by the time I return to the forum and see it still says NEW and then hit Reload it disappears as New.

Is better performance also the issue in regard to no longer displaying the number of "views"?

I would most definitely think so, when you really think about it.
