I received my cutting on 3/25 and put them in 1 1/2 in. of water with some H202, and placed under a grow light. On 3/28 installed a bubbler with the cuttings and on 4/9 both my cuttings got mushy. So I trimmed off the mushy part and dipped into hormone rooting powder and planted in soil and put back under the lights. On 4/14 one of the cuttings is getting real soft, it doesn't look to good. The other does have a few small leaves starting. I am keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that it will make it.

Maya Cuttings field test, Zone 6a, Kansas
Linda, I am crossing my fingers for the weaker one, but the other posted in your pic looks good. Just let the dampness of watering slightly go away before watering. I always mist mine because I get heavy handed sometimes when watering lol...
You're doing great! I lost one of mine already :) and it made me sad but I had another chance with the other and it's being treated with kit gloves, so to say. :)
Julie
The first time I saw a variegated brug I knew I had to have one. I have been searching everywhere for one, then I got lucky and was picked to do this field test on a Maya. I read a thread yesterday where AlohaHoya's had taken a cutting she thought was dead, and pitched it. Later she ran across it and it was starting to leave out. Go Figure. Amazing. Do you suppose that could happen to us?
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/499471/
Well Linda...mine is gone to Heaven with all the other Angel Trumpets :(...
I wish I could have saved her but that's just the breaks for me. That hasn't happened yet, but it gives us hope :-)
Julie
Julie - did you lose them both?
No hon...I still have the one I posted on my Experiment thread. It's doing great! Just the one. It was just weak and very very skinny. :( But I tried.
Wonderful Julie!
btw Linda - Congrats and glad you've got your trial thread up! For some reason I thought we were already tracking yours.
Do either of you have the variegated Peaches and Cream? I think I've seen where it is not a prolific bloomer but it is such a beautiful plant I won't much care. It's also been the best grower in the basement - stocky, big leafs, not dropping the lower ones and closer spaced on the trunk. I moved it to the greenhouse 2 days ago.
It had two very nice suckers up from below the soil line and this morning I removed them and put in a bubbler. Should they root... would you be interested?
YeSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! Ummm and Yes again! lol Email me
8ftbed----Yes I would be very interested. Just let me know.
I kinda waited to start my thread, because I hated to admit defeat, so I was giving my cuttings some time to come around. Just hoping the one I have stays with me. The other one is so soft I don't know what to expect. But I am going to keep it under the lights, just in case.
Linda
Ok ladies, they got your name on them. I hope you won't mind if I play with my bubbler and get roots first. I'll post pics of mom and the kids this evening when I get home. Hopefully Mom doesn't wilt today since I opened the gh before I left. I didn't yesterday and when I ran home at 1pm she was pouting a bit but within an hour of letting in cool lake breezes she started perking back up and this morning was her fat sassy self. She really is a beautiful plant.
No you play all you want with your bubbler and get roots, that will make it easier on us. LOL I can't wait know to get one. I will check for post on them this evening. Thanks Again.
Linda
Blaine, wow, lookin' good bro! lol
Yes I'm with Linda, play as long as you like with that bubbler system ya got goin' there. The longer the root the more it has a chance to survive for us :)))))
Thanks BaBs
Blaine, I'm not totally positive, but I think your plant IS a Maya. It sure doesn't look like my P&C looked. The leaves look too heavy and wide for P&C. When it blooms, P&C blooms hang straight down like versicolor blooms. Maya blooms will nod a little. For me, P&C was a very slow grower where Maya grew very fast. Best way to tell for sure is to watch it bloom and/or try to cross it to the new Maya cuttings when they bloom.
Guess it's a win-win situation for me then. :)
This was one of the little potted sticks I got from Valleygrow on 11-20-04. I got the variegated suaveolens that has not been near as vigorous although she has finally put on some height.
I think you're in the money now Linda and with any luck it'll have a buddy soon
UPDATE:
I think this baby is going to make it. It has been 11 days since I last posted a picture of Maya. Check out how much the leaves have grown. There are
6 1/2, I say a 1/2 cause 1 is just starting to form. I have been really babying her and just been giving her water only. Guess I should start considering feeding her now. I have been watering from the top but think I will try watering from the bottom.
Now thats a great pic of a good looking baby. Your doing good girl.
I know I was worried about loosing both of mine because I lost all the cuttings off of my CG but the PF did great. I figure if I can get them to this stage I have a good chance of keeping them both.
It was touch and go there for a while, lost one of the cuttings and I thought this was going to be a goner as will. It kept turning to mush in the water, so I finally put some root hormone on it and placed it in the ground. I hate to say it but I didn't give it much hope so I just placed it in a pot that I had a starting of a hibiscus in that had died. Just pulled it out and placed the maya cutting in it and ram bam it liked what I gave it and it came around. But now it is in good fresh clean soil. So I guess sometimes you can be too careful with them. I wouldn't advice anyone else to do this, but like I stated I didn't have high hopes of my Maya making it. But this baby is no quitter, she wants to survive, and so far she is making a good show. Love it Love it.
Isnt it amazing how they work, just like a teenager, baby and coddle and they wilt but the minute you ignore them BOOM, LOL.
Great progress Linda!
I think I'll follow your lead with the tough love with that piece I cut off to try and root for you. Looked like it was going to root but then the bottom has a darker grape green color. I haven't tested to see if it's mush but will this evening and if so - It's getting the 2pug whack-n-stick. :)

Linda, she looks GREAT! Keep up the good work...you're doing something it likes!
Julie
UPDATE:
Maya has been planted in the ground for about 3 weeks now. She is putting on new leaves and getting bigger. She does have a few places that something has taken a nibble out of her. I am thinking she needs more sun. I have her in a place where she can receive morning sun and no afternoon sun. I am planning on trimming up the red bud tree that is to the left of her, then maybe she will get the morning sun better.
She looks great Pugs, looks like she loves her spot along with her brug buddy beside her :-)
Hugs
Julie
fabulous
You're on a roll now and she's looks great. You won't be able to see any dirt by the end of the season.
I'm pulling for you
whewww, that's a good sign Linda.
Now considering your local and the odds of getting more hail... What if you teepee'd 3 or 4 small bamboo sticks or something and wrapped some wire mesh screen around the top 3rd or so? Let light and air through but protect her from future hail storms for awhile.
She is small enough now that a bucket will fit over her when it storms. The same with my P&C.
But you do have a good ideal there, I may run to down today and pick up some hail screen and get them all fixed up, just to be on the safe side.
Linda, you and Maya have really been through it, whew!! I'm glad she is a fighter and is coming around and that you had the patience to wait her out. When I first started, everyone said I should have a Dr. Suess and EP, and, I ended up with two Dr. S and three EPs. Well, they are doing so-so, EP the better of the two, but if Dr. S doesn't come around quickly it is history. Should anyone ask me, I'd say that Maya is a good starter brug - she is a fighter and both yours and mine prove that. Keep her covered if it even thinks of storming and continued good luck!!!
Thanks Sherry, every night before I go to bed she gets covered up now not taking any chances until we are out of the stormy season, if you know what I mean. Our rain quit today and I have feed all of the brugs, and my DH is out mowing the lawn. I had to come in and take some sandwich meat and bread out of the freezer. My DH said last week it seems like all you ever feed me on Fri. is bologna sandwich's what's with that. I said will you are lucky cause during the week I usually don't get to eat lunch and if I do it is on the go. He is semi- retired, self employed, so he takes off every Fri.
UPDATE:
Here is Maya she is starting to put on new leaves growing very nicely, but very slow. I fertilize about twice a week, either by foliar spraying, or just by watering. She is actually taller then she appears because I just finished mulching about a week ago and there is close to 2 inches of cedar mulch around her.
Linda
your siblings are over here cheering and waving!!!!!!!!
She looks great, Linda!!! Have you seen that new cedar mulch that is finely shredded??? I love it, but it sells out quickly, it's at WalMart...
UPDATE Maya has grown. She still isn't real big, but she has Y'ed. There are about 4 now. So I am looking for some buds to start showing. I hope winter doesn't come before she gives me a bloom. At first I was only feeding once a week, then noticed everyone else was feeding twice a week. I have started feeding every three days, half strenght on everything except ES. I use Peters 20-20-20, Maxicrop Liquid Fish Emulsion, Maxicrop Seaweed, Cal-Mag PlusŪ, and epsom salts. Since I have started doing this she has Y'ed, and looking much better. It has been so hot and dry here that I have been watering 2 to 3 times a day. We did get some needed rain last week-end, and it has been raining all day today. All my plants have been doing the happy dance, since they are getting bathed and watered.
Thanks to Kell and Scooterbug for Maya.
Linda
