Gevalia Kafee

Has anyone order one of these?
It's where you pay $19.95 for this stainless steel coffeemaker & get 2 boxes of Gevalia kaffe-value retail for $125.00.Sounds too good to be true. If anyone bought this coffee maker & coffee-please give your pros & cons about it. Is it worth ordering?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

We tried it. As far as the equipment they offer, it's okay, but their premiums are usually assigned some inflated dollar value. The coffee was good, but not that much better than what we can get locally for a lot less. Still, if you want a coffee maker, it's worth the initial cost and you can cancel any time.

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

I subscribe to Gevalia and get four boxes of coffee about every six weeks. I find the flavor richer and deeper than most coffees you can get in a grocery store, but there are other really great coffees out there... they just aren't delivered to my doorstep. Someone tipped me off about another gourmet coffee subscription company and their rates were a little higher. Anyway, I love the stuff, but I'm well aware it's not the be-all end-all King of Great Coffees.

I found the free coffeemaker to work okay while I had it, but it crapped out and died a lot sooner than the Braun I invested in, and faster than the Hamilton-Beach I had prior to that. It also required those cone filters, and once the coffee maker died, I had no clue what to do with the leftover filters.

I think the special offer you have is worth ordering. You might even try a subscription. The best part is, you can call and put a hold on shipments and just not buy any coffee for a few years. Then you can call back and reactivate your account and they'll ship you coffee again. They're very good about not being in your face with the upsell. If you don't want anything for a while, just tell 'em.

I've had Gevalia off and on for about 20 years. I really like their coffee (my fav is dark roast and better than most) and that it comes to my doorstep. I subscribe for a year or two, and quit when I move. Subscribe again, get a new coffeemaker, over and over. Worth it in my opinion.

Thanks for all your in puts-I was wondering about the coffee maker-I need a new one & wondered if it would be worth ordering-can't beat the price-just didn't know if it was worth it.Dogzilla sounds like yours didn't last long-is the coffee maker made cheap or looks cheap? I would like to get a nice one-but funds are low.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Collie, yes, it's worth ordering. I've had them last for years usually.

Thanks Darius, looks like I'm going to have to get one :)

I too am a Gevalia coffee lover! It is by far the best coffee there is, in my opinion. Their darks are very rich & not bitter at all, & they grade the coffees by strength - so it is easy to decide what variety you will like. You decide how often you have them delivered. But if you are looking for a deal, forget it! Each bag, 1/2 pound, runs around $5.50. They send freebies several times a year, so you can try out specialty flavors. I did not like the teas - they tasted washed out. I had to stop drinking coffee about 2 years ago, & I STILL crave their dark roast! My original coffemaker is still going, after 7 years, & several more in storage.

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

This is how I got a coffee maker and I still order coffee occasionally - keep it cause my in-laws just RAVE about it.....so - I think it's a good idea. I'm thinking of joining to get the slick new coffee maker they've got now....

N., CA(Zone 9a)

Re: Gevalia...
In my opinion, their coffee is ok, but not worth the price of the regular shipments. The freebie offers are totally worth it when you get a coffee maker and a couple packages of coffee or tea. I have done that 3 times and I always end up cancelling the membership. They will offer you "come back" specials that are hard to resist. Their customer service is top notch. They will work with you to suspend your shipments or cancel alltogether.

Hey you said Tea tell me more...........

Springboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Have the caraffe from them and we used their coffee for about a year, Cinnamon is the greatest flavor... mmmm..... so good. My DH and I are official coffee snobs, but we eventually decided that Gevalia was really just about as good as some brands we could get locally.

Get this, though... very funny... DH bought some cheapo coffee (Chock Full O' Nuts) at a ritzy grocery store the other day just for the hey of it. We made it, "Hm! Pretty good!" we said. Then I got crazy one morning and added cinnamon to the grinds before I started 'er up. I am telling you... it was EXACTLY like the Gevalia Cinnamon. ROTFLMBO! We were cracking up! I really, truly cannot tell you that Gevalia was better than this store bought, cheap stuff! LOL!

LOL -- However, the coffeemaker/caraffe deals are well worth it. You can space out your delivieries as you like to keep from accumulating shipment after shipment. And free stuff is free stuff, right??? Coffee snobbery has it's perks.... no pun intended...

Huga ;)

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

They have lots and lots of tea selections as well, green, black, herbal, you name it. You can change your standard order to include teas, coffee or a combination.

Sorry, I forgot to watch this thread: the coffeemaker didn't look cheap, but seemed like it only lasted a couple years. I'm pretty hard on coffeemakers, but I've had "cheap" ones that lasted ten years, so bottom line: your mileage may vary.

I agree with others here: I'm not saying the coffee is any better than other gourmet coffees, but it beats the pants off Starbucks, hands down and the convenience + freebies = worth it, IMHO.

For what it's worth, my favorite is the breakfast blend, and the Costa Rican Terrazu, if I can get it.

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

anyone actually drink the tea how Good is it?

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

LOL. No, I don't actually drink the tea. I grow my own herbs, so if I'm gonna drink tea, it'll be out of something from the yarden. I would never actually pay for herbal tea when I have tons of it just outside the back door...

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

Dogzilla what do your garden herbs sound interesting . I hope i didn't sound like a Jack a**! I wasn't meaning to be. I love coffee and like tea but i have an excellent coffee maker but need a new tea maker.

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

No, I thought that was funny.

Check out Alessi teapots: a friend just gave me an antique. The kettle whistle is actually a two-note pitch pipe, so when the water's hot, it sounds like a train is running through the kitchen. Makes the dogs bark and the neighbors wonder!

* I do a lot of reading on ethnobotany (how native peoples used plants medicinally) and grow a lot of things that have certain properties. Then I find out that I have to kill the plant to make the tea, so I just enjoy the plant and never bother with the tea. Echinacea (purple coneflowers) are an excellent example! I end up using stevia to sweeten things, and occasionally drink lemon balm tea or something. Catnip tea is actually very good, too, kind of minty. (But it makes me want to scratch up the furniture and then go bury things in sand... just kidding.)

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

too funny

How do you make your tea with the coffeemaker?
I know the Gevalia folks will tell you but would love to hear some of the ways any of you do you tea making with the coffeemaker.By the way I made my order last week-will let you know when it arrives.I am glad to hear their coffee is better than Starbucks because I got hooked on Starbucks in those little bottles(cold coffee) I have never been a coffee drinker until I started buying those in the bottles that come 4 to a pack-which I think is too pricey for such little bottles-but I love the taste. Now with the coffeemaker-I may really become hook on coffee.I have always been a Pepper-you know Dr.Pepper & nothing else. I'm a Pepper big time-so will have to see if I will come a coffee drinker-but don't think coffee will or can over come my Dr.Pepper habit :)
Oh,don't forget to tell me your tea making secrets with the coffeemaker.
Thanks.

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

I think i am going to try this special out . What teas should i start with? I need to loose a few pounds so any that might curb your appetite naturally would be good and I like to have a cup at night some times before bed.

How many tea bags= to how much water.
My bil makes tea in his coffeemaker & coffee too-it doesn't seem to affect the tea-I love his tea-but they won't tell me how they make it-guess I will have to keep going to their house to drink tea :) I think their's is a Mr.coffee-not sure. I know he puts the sugar(don't know how much) in with the tea bags(don't know how many) & run it through a cycle & then puts this in a gallon jar & add more plain water to make a gallon-they have told me this much but won't tell me the whole recipe-just say you know just put tea bags & sugar in & turn the coffeemaker on.Maybe this is all that's all to it-but somehow seems there is a step they are leaving out telling me.
Darius,I know you would know what to do-you are great at these kinds of things.

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

well i would say three small tea bags or four and 1-1/12 cups of sugar to a gallon of water

Thanks,springsong-would that be the regular size tea bags or the family size bags?
Haven't gotten my cooffeemaker,yet-hope it won't be long.

springsong,I'm sorry,,just notice you said small bags.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I make both loose tea and tea bags the same way in my coffee maker. Measure out 4-6 small tea bags or 2-3 heaping teaspoons loose tea IN THE POT, not in the filter unit. Run 8 cups of water through the filter unit (fill it first! before putting tea in thge pot).

Let it steep 10-15 minutes, and pour into a jar with an equal amount of cold water. For daytime tea, I use a blend of half regular tea like lipton's and half some herbal tea, like raspberry, lemon zinger or cranberry. I like the raspberry best. For a lovely night-time tea before sleep, use sleepytime teabags, or straight chamomile buds (1 Tbs. max). DO NOT make it strong as it's a pretty good sedative and you want to awaken in the morning!

Even though a Southerner, I seldom drink sweet tea and only add 1/4 tsp. of sugar to coffee to cut the acid. You could add whatever amount of sugar you use for half a gallon (like 1 cup) to the pot with the tea bags. It will dissolve.

Quoting:
four and 1-1/12 cups of sugar to a gallon of water
is enough sugar to put one on the road to being diabetic! What that much sugar does is dump lots of insulin in the system. Please try cutting it back!

Whatever you do, PLEASE do not use any of the artificial sweeteners. Bad Health reports (and deaths) on them are coming in fast and strong, esp. aspartame.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I'm thankful I like unsweetened iced tea. I do like a little sugar or honey in regular hot tea, but I like most herbal teas unsweetened, too. We got a Mr. Coffee 3qt. Ice Tea maker from a member on Freecycle http://freecycle.org and it brews great tea. I think using loose tea leaves would work better than bags for the reason that the grounds would have room to plump up and more flavor would be extracted. Alton Brown says to spritz your coffee grounds and tea leaves with a little water and let them sit a few minutes before brewing. I've not tried that yet, but will next time I do the tea.

Thank you so much Darius & Kim!!
I can't wait to get my coffeemaker.
I think,I will be making more tea than coffee :)

N.C. Mts., NC(Zone 6b)

Gardenwife, I don't open the little valve on my M.C. tea maker. the water will run out thru the over flow slower. The water is sitting on the tea bags longer. It works, and has never run over. I let the last bit of water sit in with the tea bags for awhile.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, that's good to know, Lizh - thank you.

I got my coffeemaker last week & like it alot :)
The choices of coffee,I do not care for:
Amarello & Breakfast Blend,to me they are too bitter for my taste.
Which flavor(s) are your favorites?
Do any of you like sweetens or cream in your coffee?
If so what do you use & brand,do you use.
I have never been able to drink just black(plain) coffee.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I don't like bitter, strong coffees, either. We like the light roasts, and don't make them as strong as the directions call for. I usually have to ask for mine to be cut with hot water when we go to coffee shops because they brew it so strong.

I like mine black, but sometimes have flavored creamer in it. A tablespoon of melted ice cream works great, I've read -- and you can flavor it accordingly. I like the International creamers and those by Nestle. They're just not worth the calories, fat or $$ to us, though, except for special treats.

There's a bunch of creamer recipes at http://www.recipelink.com/gm/0/64701

Thank you Kim-I never thought of using ice cream, sounds good.
What flavor ice cream do you use & what brand? Seems I read at somtime back what your favorite brand was & can't remember what it is.
Will check out your link later. Thanks!!

bump
