We found this bird outside next to a glass wall not able to fly very well. Most likely he flew into the glass and is now stunned. I'm not sure what to feed him or how to rehab him. He drinks when you place a drop of water on his beak. Any advice from you bird people? Here's a picture to see if anyone here can ID him. Thanks.
Can you ID this bird?
HI, the closest I could find in my bird book, was a Blue-winged warbler.
What I have done for stunned birds is just to keep them warm and still for a bit, then take them to the emergency clinic. His accepting water is a good sign, so keep on providing it.
Do you have an Audubon Society in your area? They may know of some local rehabers, or your local vet may know. Good luck, such a cutie.
I'll have to look around and see who I can take the bird to. I don't really want the responsiblity that comes along with caring for this little guy. I'm not sure if we have any society type organizations but I'm pretty sure we do. Thanks for the info.
That is what we (in East Texas) call a yellow finch. They stay the winter around here and leave in spring. They love thistle and we keep feeders out all winter. There are still a few around here. They will leave about the time the hummingbirds arrive. Guess they are headed farther north. Jenny
This happened to a friend of mine a few weeks ago. She put it in an enclosed porch and kept food and water available. It survived just fine and flew away to freedom a few days later. I think it is a golden(yellow) finch.
Cool. Thank you both (and all of you for that matter). You've all been a great help. I hope he survives. So he's a seed eating bird, right? Thanks again.
Hi Hugo,
I believe it is a female Prothonotary Warbler. They are much duller than the bright yellow males. They nest under my porch every year and I enjoy them. They have a thunderous voice for such little birds.
Thanks Lisa. This little guy is very quiet and unusually calm (a bit concerning) but does try to fly if something moves quickly infront of him. Obviously, I try to speak more quietly and move slower around him but dogs will be dogs. They were so excited when I found it. It's now wrapped in a towel and I placed him in a dark quiet room. I was afraid that he might have a hurt wing and continue hurting it if he kept trying to fly. We'll see how he does in the A.M. What should I feed him? Any ideas? Thanks.
no, hugo, wish I knew :( my neighbor brought me one last year that was injured. I wasn't able to save it. I hope you have better luck. Cute little birdies aren't they.
Yeah Lisa, They ARE cute. We'll see how he does.
Oh, boy! its going to be a tough one for you Hugo. According to this site; http://www.nearctica.com/birds/warbler/Pcitrea.htm they eat insects & aquatic invertebrates. Does it attempt to fly on its own?
Gemila
This makes sense since I live a block away from Santa Rosa sound.
****Update****
I have great news! He flew out of the t-shirt I had him wrapped in this morning. He was fluttering about in the bedroom with no indication that he ever had a problem. I let him go later on shortly after giving him a drink of water. I watched him fly up in the tree closest to the house. He sat up there for some time and hopped from one branch to another. He then flew on away. He had no difficulty flying so I'm sure he'll be fine.
Good for you (and the bird), Hugo!
That's great! I just saw this thread and was so happy to get to the end and see good news. :)
That is So good to hear.
