'Member Mail'

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Is it possible to tell if a 'member-mail' was recieved and read? I have sent a couple out to various members and have not heard back from them. Either they chose not to reply, or the mail has not been recieved.
Is there a way to check?

I am very curious about this also, as I have been trying to reach a member for over a week and don't know if they have read it yet.

A read receipt would be nice, I agree. Maybe the recipient should have the choice of whether or not it is sent, though.

I know that people don't always go to Dave's as often as some do. But after so many days, Dave sends you a notification to your regular email - in case they read that. I got a notification once - it was either when I was on vacation or after my surgery. (do not remember).

To me, a week is nothing. I have friends that don't check theirs for a month - don't even go on the internet for that long.

I've always wished, even before the mail system was changed, that we could be notified if an e-mail sent via DG bounced. I know the volume of bounces must be HUGE at a site with this membership, and maybe to add to that bandwidth by sending bounce notifications is just too much, though.

The ability to opt out of sending a read receipt defeats the purpose of having one. Still wouldn;t know if the member recieved your email or not.
My point is to know if someone is purposely ignoring my emails, or if they are not being recieved at all.

Just like with regular email, you never really know for sure if the recipient got it, other than to ask them and they answer you.

At least DG mail is more secure than regular email. There isn't any spam here and your messages here aren't going to get lost in a bulk mail folder.

It would be an invasion of privacy to give you the option to see if the member has read the mail you sent them.

With no disrespect intended, how is it an invasion of privacy?
I know when sent mail is opened and viewed when using my regular email program.

So at this point I will simply assume any unanswered mail is purposely being ignored...................

Thanks for posting an answer Dave

Do you? Email me at dave@standardout.com and then let me know when I have read it.

I will do so when I geting from work this evening......I don't have that option at work.

Thanks, I'm very much looking forward to this. I'm interested to see if it works.

It's simply a read receipt....no magic trick.

To protect my privacy, my mailer ignores read receipts. Most mailers can be configured (as a default option) to ignore them.

Ah well than that settles that I guess. :-)
Thanks again for your replies Dave

I don't allow my e-mail client to issue read receipts, either. You use Thunderbird, Dave?

No, I use mutt http://www.mutt.org/

Trish uses thunderbird, so I administer that for her.

I have used Netscape mail for years and Thunderbird for the last 1 year. With both email clients, I decline ALL read receipts. I have the choice to decline all OR accept all OR ask me on each message how to handle the read receipt.

AOL has a system in place where you can check the 'status' of sent mail (when and what time it was read) but it only works between AOL members. I love that feature!

Speaking of mail tho...I sure hope we can keep working on the system--with the round-ups, the mail sure does add up. It would be nice to have folders or some way of seperation.

I don't know if this is the reason you don't hear back from some mail sent, but I enter Dave's at FORUMS and any mail sent to me does not show up there. I accidentily hit HOME one day and saw there was mail waiting and had been there for some time. I now click on HOME at least once a day to see if I have any mail. I suppose I could change my favorite places to enter Dave's at HOME and avoid this problem. DUH. Harold

I use then home button everytime I change screens. :-)
I did finally hear from one of the people, but not all. I will just assume the mail is being ignored and move on since there is nothing I can do about it save pestering these people, and I refuse to do that.
Thanks for the suggestion though :-)

I do what Marc doesn. I check into home every time I change screens. It's fun because you can actually have conversations with people!
