Very cool...did it take a year of growth before flowers first appeared (i.e., did it flower the second season)?
As the storm clouds parted, a dark & sultry lady appeared...
It went into the ground in the fall of 2003 and bloomed last summer.....not very well because the wind kept beating it up and breaking it. The flower color was much paler last year http://davesgarden.com/contest/2004/image.php?rid=2178
Good luck, Joseph. I lost mine last summer to too much heat and humidity.
Beautiful flowers on Ms Scarlett!!
Good luck to you Joseph, wishing you the best with your toddler!
Ms. Scarlett is drop dead gorgeous! I love the red.
You must be proud....
Me too! Any way you look at Scarlet, she is a beauty!!
Now she is showing off. But why not?
Now doesn't that look like two big bug eyes to you guys?????
Try and visualize a big nose right in between those "eyes."
I think it's time to go outside for awhile.
Miss Scarlot, WHAT A HUSSY!! But, frankly, I'm sure she doesn't give a ****.
Happenstance, what part of San Franscisco do you live in? I used to live in Noe Valley years ago and then the Sunset before I moved to Oregon a few years ago. Do you think this type of plant could survive outside with a few freezes a year? I gotta have one of those.
Chad
Love it
that color is awesome!!
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very very beautiful, first brug flower I saw in red color......
Thanks for sharing with us.
Kaleem
Wow makes me want to go to California. Just beautiful.
So glad you are enjoying the tale of Ms Scarlet. Her only complaint is that there has been no sign of Rhett during this whole ordeal. But she's got a good attitude about life and hasn't taken to dressing up in the parlor drapes yet......da da boom.
Now the trick will be to see if I can promote some more buds and keep her going. Someday, I'll have to take a picture of this straggly plant to show you how hard life has been for her. She is about six feet tall, has been "topped" by the wind a couple of times, has a crook in her back, and now has this little topnot of good growth and a couple more buds. She is a powerful force and every time I try to take a full-on shot it comes out blurry or completely black. Yikes!
Sorry Chad, I got wrapped up in the saga of Ms S and forgot to answer your question!
On closer inspection I think you'll see it says "Bay Area"........well now since that covers 9 counties, it's a pretty large area, but members from other locations seem to find it sufficient. I used to have "Clayton, CA" which very few people had any idea even existed. So to be more specific, we're about 50 miles due east of The City, beyond Walnut Creek and a quarter of the way up Mt. Diablo's 4,000' elevation.
Love The City, but don't get there as often as we used to, when my husband worked in the financial district.....I hope you are loving Oregon with it's beauty and serenity.
she's gorgeous, candy! i just started some seeds, and i can't wait. i have a yellow that's about to bloom, and glad we don't have a storm for a week.....
thanks for sharing!
Thanks for showing her off but please keep taking picture so we can see the color changes. I have never seen a red one. Joan
Thre's a place called "Strange and Wonderful Things" that sells a plant that looks like that. It's on Evil Bay, and I've reached my Christmas spending limit. ;-(
mary, i drool on that listing every week....i watch it go higher and higher...
i bought seeds instead and they are coming out as we speak.
Beautiful blooms!!! Thanks for sharing those gorgeous flowers. I'll have to be satisfied enjoying them through posted photos. I bought seed before learning about their temperature requirements. All 5 seeds germinated and were growing really well until late May when our summer heat kicked in. I have one left and it is barely hanging on.
Betty what are the heat requirements? Joan
Joan,
It's not heat they need, it's cool weather. According to Preissel's book, B. sanguinea won't bloom if the temperatures go above 71ºF. Temperatures between 50º - 60ºF seem to be ideal. I was surprised at how quickly two of them died. Literally, over night. The third and fourth B. sanguinea to die languished for a while before the tip drooped over and the whole thing turned yellow and died. I put the last one in my small orchid greenhouse because it stays cooler during the summer. I need to move it to the larger greenhouse now because it is now the cooler of the two.
I am so sorry after growing them from seed that they would just up and die on you.
When we live in Tx. every thing has to be heat proof including me. Joan
Where can I get seeds for these beauties?
Lavina
HI hAPPENSTANCE WHAT IS THE SECRET OF GROWING SANGINEA I HAD TWO THAT WERE BEAUTIFUL BUSHES AND I BROUGHT THEM IN DOWN TO MY PLANT ROOM AND WITHIN A MONTH THEY BOTH DIED. WAS IT TOO COLD MY CELLAR IS 62-64 DEGREES AND ALL THE OTHER PLANTS ARE DOING GREAT. bOB
