Tropical Plant Sale

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I ordered some plants from this site last year and all were small. By small, we're talking about them fitting into maybe a 2" pot at the largest. My nanas grew and are getting bigger, but I lost about 1/2 of the Alocasias. Maybe it was too much of a shock for them to go from Texas sun to Oregon sun.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Edited to say, I asked the guy I traded with and he knows nothing about this place. LOL

Look at "Daves Garden" Forum, for the "Watch Dog" thread.

It is in regards to "Paradise Gardens" (not the same as "Paradise Plants) but I can't help but wonder about this........ Hopefully it is nothing.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

There's a thread for Paradise Plants as well on Garden Watch dog http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/3543/

The feedback I see there is consistent with what I've experienced. Took a month to even get my order.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

yes - I had read that and saw it was a 50/50. I am hoping this isn't the same company as the other one that was listed on that thread I provided.

Paradise Gardens is owned by Oakes Daylilies sort of(It's a member of the family who owns it and it's right there at the daylily farm). I love their daylilies and have been to their nursery many many times.I think their daylilies are great(nice huge clumps, not bad price), but the plants I saw in their "Paradise Gardens" division I thought were waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too high and some were scrawny.
Forgot to add.......someone mentioned in the GWD ratings that the plants were shipped from Garden Crossings. I'm 99% sure they are owned by Walters Gardens, a big wholesale plant company that has nice bare root plants that they sell wholesale. They have a website but aren't listed in GWD.

i cant load their web page today. Is it me or are they down?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I just now clicked and went straight in.

glenmora, LA(Zone 8a)

ok for me to thank you.

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

I was thinking of ordering some daylilies from Oakes in their catalog they have 100 mixed hybrids for 249.95 what do you think about this?
It says "The plants will be the same large size as our named daylilies, and the mix is heavy on the pinks, reds, purples, eyezones, with mostly large flowers and less of the oranges and yellows.

Sounds like a good deal. I wonder if my hubby would notice $250 showing up on the credit card?
I used to go to their display gardens for Open House and they gave everybody that came a seedling. I loved their display gardens, made me want one of everything, plus they had stuff that wasn't in the catalog.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Ya know, I can't remember what company it was, but my neighbor across the street said she ordered 100 daylilies for $99 or something like that. I can't ask her, because she must be out of town - I haven't seen her for over a week. When she returns, I'll try to remember to ask her about it.

I called Paradise Plants yesterday as it had been a week since I placed my order and I'll I had heard from anyone was confirmation of payment from Paypal. I was told she was just getting ready to email me.

Today I got this:

"Dear dstartz,

Your purchase will be shipped with PayPal Shipping with U.S. Postal
Service!

Paradise Plants used PayPal Shipping with U.S. Postal Service to create a shipping label for your purchase. Once the package is given to the Post Office(tm), it will be on its way to you!"

Monday should tell the tale....

As to how email addresses were obtained:

I have a secure website for people sending me financial information. Someone out of state sent me an app last week, and within seconds of sending it, they received an email from a competing company, stating that whatever I offered, they could beat! This didn't go to the email addy they used in my app, but to an old email addy they rarely use anymore. Needless to say, I had a few words for the company who handles our site.

They were all over it very quickly, and put a stop to it the same day. But apparently this is one of the things that can be done with cookies and spyware and such, is track when you respond on a website, and it triggers an email.

glenmora, LA(Zone 8a)

i got my order from them today.i ordered nebula imperialis and crassifolia. They were the size of plug trays, but they did look good.

I got my plant today. It's a small plug-type plant, but has 2 large healthy leaves. For $5.00 it was a good deal.

If I order from them again, though, I will be sure to tell them I'm a member of DavesGarden. ;->

I think letting them know you are part of a large gardening community that rates them is a very good idea! :-)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I may have to go order that Nancy's REvenge after all!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

well I threw caution to the wind and send them my $4.95. When I talked to Mr Luper on the phone I told him I wanted an EE Sarian, then I changed my mind and when I sent the ck I wrote a note that I wanted Hilo Beauty instead. Well guess what, I got both! Will mail her the balance. As you can see from pix plants look good. I think I will keep both in a pot this year, however, too tender-looking to brave the brutal Texas sun this year.

He done right my me so I will post feedback accordingly.

Kaleem,

I just remembered your kitten story. I don't think you've seen mine. It is on the Jokes & Chat Forum - in a couple of threads. What happened is I discovered that there were kittens being raised high up in a tree, in a hole, and thought it was just amazing. I called the News channel that I watch, and the next day they sent over a guy who spent at least 2 hours (patiently) getting footage of it. Well, it made the local news, and then the next day aired on national news, on the Fox News Channel. Here is the link to the best pics:

Those ears look REALLY nice! Were those some of the $4.95 ones or higher? How was the shipping and packaging?

Next questions. Is that your yard and pool?? Beautiful!!

Okay, I'll leave ya be now. LOL

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

badseed, yep to both questions and thanks. $4.95 was shipping included.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I was going to ask if you wanted to adopt me too but I thought that was WAY too many questions. LOL My brother lives in Dallas and I have never been down there.

Let me try this again. You pay $4.95 for the plant AND that includes the shipping?? WOW!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Oh please come visit! www.plantparidise.net is the website. Two days ago when I check I didn't see the little $4.95 plants but I'm sure they have them. If you buy w/ the expectation to "baby" them this year, and have a decent plant NEXT year, I think this is a good deal. The plants are delicate but they were very carefully packed. Again, $4.95 covered shipping.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

their phone # 1 800 281 0228. Also I goofed on the name. the correct website is www.paradiseplant.net

lol!

I ordered a second plant and it came even faster than the first.

Maybe they're getting their act together....

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

There is always the possibility they were just a mom and pop deal with a few extra plants and thought it would be nice to sell them on the side then things started to steam roll or they got more serious about it. I am happy to know they are sending out nicer plants and in better time.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Badseed, that is what I originally said - that maybe they were first getting started, and are more organized now. Glad to see this is panning out, and perhaps can be "good" on the watchdog. Be sure, guys - to put your input in for them.

Olathe, KS(Zone 6a)

Well I reckon I'll give them a shot, they have many EE's not easily found around here. It sounds like mentioning DG membership pays off?! I'll let ya know.

sad news, folks. my EE Sarian bit the dust. was in the shade, watered as needed, but it had crown rot (?). The EE Hilo Beauty is doing well, has put out its third leaf.

I ordered 2 more plants, EE Hilo Beautyand dwarf Orinoco banana, last week and received them today. All are doing well so far. Nery, so sorry to hear of your loss. I'll be interested to hear what they do about it.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I was going to let it go. they sent me 2 for the price of one, so it was no financial loss to me. However, if I go buy another Hilo Beauty, which I might, I will be sure and mention the loss then. I was reading up on crown rot and it says you can repot root system and give your seedling a 2nd chance. will keep you posted. ta ta

Since I posted what I did about Paradise Plants I thought I needed to add this post script.

The Variegated African Mask 'Polly' I purchased from them came apart before I could get it planted.

They're response, "On your next order we will throw in an extra plant for you." "We cannot be responsible or guarantee a plant after you receive it. Not with only paying $4.95 and no shipping charges at all. There really isn't much more that I can do."

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I did nothing. The one I do have is doing really well, considering the freak heat, no humidity heatwave. It is about 8" tall, but it has been adding leaves. If it can make it thru this summer, I think I'll have a keeper.
