Seed Snatchin' Part IX ... Plantin' the Snatched Seeds!

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

You guys, I have to stay out of the gardening departments when I go to the store. I'm going broke. I want everything. I'm greedy. Shame on me.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hee hee Kathy! If you were closer I'd let you 'shop' in my yard! FOC!!!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Remember kathy, snatchin if free, so snatch more and buy less!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Mysticwill, if you must have a habit, this one is certainly less trouble than most!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Better for you too!! I can think of a bunch that only do you harm!! :)

Brookhaven, PA(Zone 7a)

Although- it's enough to give my DH fits! LOL! the propagation bench he JUST built me (holds 15 flats) isn't BIG enough! LOL!!!!!!!

Just started the seed form the bubbblegum rose today! the cuttings look happy and look like they are growing!

Now if I could just get these stinkin plumera cutting to grow...... :-<

Heather

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

You've got the seed starting fever, Heather! Your poor DH is in for a lot of building! My poor DH has built me six plant racks that hold 16 flats each, but I'm also running two halide lights and my little greenhouse is full. Last Monday we went to get 8 more bales of potting mix and another frame tent to cover in plastic for a second heated greenhouse. I'm completely out of room and I've still got hundreds of flats to do... sigh!

Rotterdam, NY(Zone 5b)

I have a quick question about saving seeds. Some stems of flowers had broke off these coral bells I bought...well actually they were already broke I just stuck them in the pot and made it look like it was still attached to the plant....LOL. Anyhoo....can I save the flowers for seeds?? I'm not sure how that's done...I don't have any books yet to get info from...since I have been so busy planting and playing in the yard I haven't really made the time for going to the bookstore (another hobby I love). Any suggestions or advice would be great. Thanks!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

It really depends on how far along the flowers were in development. If they were ready to fall off, the seeds might continue to mature, but otherwise, I'd doubt it. However, it never hurts to try, does it?

Rotterdam, NY(Zone 5b)

Nope...sure doesn't hurt to try, thanks Weezingreens.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Hi Lisa~
Welcome to Dave's Garden. Sounds like you are already a seasoned snatcher LOL

I bet you have been busy with that long growing season. I lived in North Highlands, not far from you. Went to the hospital in Roseville a lot, and the Farmer's Market there too I believe. The Valley is such a beautiful place, I will have to take my kids there one day.

I snatched a beautiful cutting off a hibsicus at Sam's the other day. I was sitting on the bench, waiting for my oldest to finish in the bathroom, and a lady came by with a potted one she was buying. We struck up talk, nad I pointed out to her that she could root the limb that was broken down. She broke it off and handed it to me. Said "If they give you any trouble at the register, you tell them that I already PAID for this plant and can give you a piece if I want to.

Problem is it has been a hectic week, and I have never rooted a hibiscus before. It got stuck in a plastic bottle with water as soon as I got to the van. But not it is wilting. HELP! It was a beatiful sort of mallow with a white star in the center (no blooms on my branch though) Any suggestions?

Tamara

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hmmm... hope you can get some help Tamara!

I have a big bottle of rooting gel - if you want I will send you a smidgen! Maybe someone will let us know if it will help...

I'll keep watchin'!!!

My - this sounds like a thread for me! I was out walking last night and wanted to snitch... but was going to bed immediately after got home. Thought this site about propagation would be interesting for those that asked some questions. Just ignore where he is trying to sell nursery business info. He does have a lot of info, don't remember if hibiscus is there. http://www.freeplants.com/ There is another great site, some university - I have the link on my home computer. Tried to look it up and found this, which may be good, haven't got to look at it, my lunchtime is over... http://muextension.missouri.edu/xplor/agguides/hort/g06560.htm

Have fun snitchin everyone!! Suzi :)

Howdeeeee, I am so happy to see so many new folks here, Art, who likes theme parks for cuttings, Heather and her bubblegum rose, Lisa and Suzi too.
Un fortunately I have been on the snatched side instead of the usual way.
2 beautiful baskets swiped from a fundraiser last Saturday and a Cement Birdbath out of the front yard I'm not sure when.
I'm hoping they went to someones mother or GM whose life really needed cheering up from someone who Truely couldn't afford them. I have really missed yall and don't know how this got past me.
I've got 3 roses that look like they are taking and just so much to keep me busy http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/498947/ is where you can see my begining atemps at basket design.
Mags writes great songs too.

GRRR!!!! Sugarweed!!!!!!!!!!!

I am also missing my Sum and Substance hosta and a bunch of daffodils from my mailbox. They MAY have died but there is an awfully big hole where my hosta used to be. It was my favorite too! Oh well, none of it was rare and the other yards in my neighborhood are not the yard of a gardener soo....

The birdbath was a bold move though!! Those things are HEAVY!!!

I am sorry! Can't wait to see you at the round up!!!

Nicole

Oh and I have been playing around with my flower pics a bit. Check this out!

Snagged me about 40-50 pots tonight. Neighbor had roof redone, dumpster still in yard. I cleaned glass and a can lid out of street (recycling truck donated, apparently). Figured, why not put it right into the dumpster?! Noticed all the pots - Bright smile appeared on my face!! Have never met the wife, but figured she wasn't going to mind me helping myself to her old pots, so I took them. It was sort of like saying, here Suzi, thanks for cleaning the glass off of the street! Couple neighbors said thanks too! Great to be helpful. Even better to get rewarded immediately thereafter! I feel like I scored a great bargain, life is great! Have fun! Enjoy! Life is too short! ~ Suzi :)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

God is good all the time!
I have been planting hanging baskets and selling them. Found some great nice plastic ones at WM with hangers and drip catchers attached for 97 cents each, bought 23 today. Will plant now to sell for mother's day. I am having some luck.

Hey Weez! I just read about Aurora the Octopus. How neat!!!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Welcome to all the new snatchers and DGers! No matter how many come, there is always room in the bus.

LOVE that pic NC, can you put it on some notecards for me? Send it with my PGel. LOL.

Sorry you got robbed Sugar, but you have such a good attitude about it. Sounds like your plant selling business is really taking off.

Suzi~Life is great, and the rewards are grand! :-)

Still no rooting advice, will go to a new thread and see what happens...

Later on~Tamara

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks Tamara ! That's a good idea actually if only my printer weren't a billion years old!!

If you end up needing the gel let me know!!

Tamara, try posting in the propagation forum.... Sorry I can't offer much help, never tried rooting hibiscus. My usual fall-back method is to dip in rooting hormone, pot up in moist soilless medium, and keep humid by misting or by enclosing in a big plastic bag. During the summer, my DM roots cuttings of various sorts by putting them in water for a week, then sticking them in the shade under a bush....

So far, I'm glad to say my neighbors have been content to enjoy the plants in my yard, and none have gone missing. GRRRR, indeed! I came inside sputtering like a teakettle last summer when I discovered a hole where I'd had a nice clump of feather grass.... the more so since the miscreant had actually left *my* shovel right by the hole! And then I discovered that the "miscreant" was DH, who thought that clump was regular lawn grass that had escaped into my garden & gotten away from my weeding efforts! He said it took a lot of digging to get it out, too, and he couldn't believe I hadn't pulled it while it was still small, LOL! Fortunately, he had only tossed it back into the fence row, so he retrieved it and I replanted it, and it's already putting up new leaves this spring. :-)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

HAHAHHA!!! Critter that is HILARIOUS!!!

My mowed over all my basil last year but so far hasn't actually dug anything up! I asked him, "Did you not SMELL it when you mowed over it?" He just said, "Duuuhhhhh, no?"

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You can smell it all over the neighborhood when I mow back the mint......

Anybody wants to snatch some spearmint from me, just LMK..... 'Kentucky Colonal' is a nice cultivar..... pretty sure the other stuff popping up is 'Chocolate Peppermint', and I have plenty of catnip too.... I bet I could tuck a few rooted sprigs into a BE and they'd travel just fine!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

ohh, I could grow those boys in a POT!!!

hmmm.... I need to stop snatchin', I am going to be moving soon.... no no no no ... I will not Snatch from my Snatchin' buddies, I will not Snatch from my Snatchin' buddies, I will not...

Brookhaven, PA(Zone 7a)

I want some chocolate peppermint!!! I'll pot that baby right up!

Pretty please?

Heather

Brookhaven, PA(Zone 7a)

the bublegum rose didn't make it........ and I met the new neighbor she seems nice , hopefully she won't cut it down (or will let me have it) or will at least let me try again after I pick the brain of those who know best how to get the stinkin thing to root........

Heather

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Heather, I'd be happy to send you some.... we'll try a few sprigs in a BE, and if they don't travel well that way, we'll try again! Please send me DG email to remind me..... We'll be out of town over the weekend, but I'll dig around early next week & find some for you!

If you're not in the exchange, please email your address too....

nc, I always have plenty of mint, so I'll be happy to send you some after you move!

The spearmint, in particular, has spread through a bed that gets tilled every spring.... it's fairly shallow rooted, so it doesn't seem to interfere with anything else we want to plant there. I think it makes sort of a nice "green mulch," and it also seems to keep the bunnies away from that bed -- Bonus!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Heather, I'll look for that great rose rooting thread, I think it's in the rose forum. First they have to calous, then they root. It takes 3 - 4 months. I have 1 in the ground with a gal. pickle jar over it. I also have some in pots with 2 liter soda bottles (with the top 1/5th cut off) turned upside down over them. when that green stick with thorns starts swelling red buds and leafing it's great. The thread(s) may be under propagation.

Moon Twp, PA(Zone 6a)

Tamara,
Guess the other 2 links I sent did not help you. This one should: http://www.gardenhive.com/q-a-forum/q-a-propagate-hibiscus1.htm Happy gardening! ~ Suzi :)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Thanks Suzi, just haven't had time to look. Have pink eye right now. Garden comes frirst then rest, then only the basic computer stuff. I hope it lives till I can search those links you gave me thanks!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey, Heather, I took a nibble of that mint today, and I'm no longer sure if it's 'Chocolate Mint' or not.... I know I had some there, and this has the typical dark stems of Chocolate Mint, but the flavor seems stronger & less sweet than I remember..... Maybe it's just that these are the first spring shoots. I checked some coming up in my neighbor's yard, where I *know* we only put 'Chocolate Mint', and it seems to be the same, so maybe it's just different in spring or at least different than I'm remembering it! BTW, 'Chocolate Mint' doesn't really smell strongly of chocolate, but if you close your eyes you can sort of imagine it being like one of those "Andes Candies" choclate after dinner mints.

Regardless, I shall snatch you some (from the neighbor's, if need be), and I'll snatch some spearmint while I'm at it. (No problem telling them apart, in addition to flavor/scent, the spearmint is a brighter green.) I had a thought.... any chance you're planning to come to the mid-Atlantic RU? I'm going to try to make it, and if you'll be there I can give you a nice big clump..... I can still try sending some starts in a BE this week too.

NC, that spearmint is pretty much coming up all over that 5 x 12 foot bed, so there should be no problem sending you some after you get settled again!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Mints are stronger and weaker according to a list of things. The same mint will taste stronger in the morning than in high heat.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I also think mints cross-pollinate, so who knows.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

That sounds great Critterologist!!!! Who knows when I will be 'settled' again. I already have so many plants I'm taking with me waiting is a great idea.

Danville, VA(Zone 7b)

Hello all snatchers, just wanted to make sure this thread wasn't just for seed snatchin'. We e-mailed Weeningreen to tell her about my wife and I snatching cuttings from plants in the area. Now we've gone one step forward and are snatching cuttings from plants we don't even know the names of just because my wife thinks they're pretty. Can't wait for things to start seeding cause it's sure alot easier to snatch seed pods then digging up plants when you're in that snatch mode in a deserted house back yard that's posted no tresspassing!!! This is where we got our phlox!!!! No need to buy it, snatch it!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

You are in the right thread! :-D

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Hi, rb250. No, this thread isn't just for seed snatchin'. Any sort of snatchin' applies. I came back with the ol' seed snatchin' bus to give you a lift over to the new thread. This one is getting pretty long. As you'll see on seed snatchin' X, you can even snatch at the city dump!
