Under planting brugs

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I tried million bells last year, but they melt away here when it gets hot. Ace of Spades sweet potato vine looked gorgeous in the pot with Sunray. I put impatiens in several pots, and they did great. In fact, Kristi, your white one that I love so much still has a full skirt of the impatiens with the white star in the middle.

One thing that I originally did to give water to the brugs instead of the annuals has worked so well that I did it to ALL of the pots, not just the underplanted ones. I cut the bottom from a 24 ounce bottle, turned it upside down, and sank it into the pot so that only a little bit sticks out of the soil. When I water, those get filled as well. If the plant is dry at the bottom, the water drains out quickly. If it has plenty of water, it stays in the bottle and seeps into the soil as it's needed.

Kristi I know where you live and as soon as I get a chance I will be up your way to hijack some of those BEAUTIES!!!!!!! LOL

Great idea Ronna with the pop bottle! I just remembered I was suppose to email you back the other (more then the other day) I'm so SORRY!!! How are you doing after your fall? I'll write you tomorrow in the a.m. I bet the impatients look beautiful under the white one. I'm going to have to get a cutting of that one this spring. :)

Sue- I wish you would come here. I can load you up with some plants & cuttings. I even have a few extra large plants that need homes.

Shirley the lobelia is beautiful but it burns out on me about a month after I plant it. I'm going to try Ronna's pop bottle idea.

Ronna do you put dirt in the pop bottle or leave a void?

Thanks Gaylams! I started to do this when I had so many left over annuals and no more pots to put them in.

I'm fine, Kristi. For everyone else, I happened to email Kristi right after tripping on my front step, smashing a brand new clay pot that I was carrying, and bruising my body and ego in the process! I'm glad that you want a cutting, I've been trying to give you one forever! The blooms on it last twice as long as any others in the winter, and smell heavenly!

The plastic bottle in the pot is empty, pushed down into the soil. The little neck of the bottle probably gets filled up when it's pushed down, and it makes it wick the water out as it's needed. I had several plants that would wilt in the afternoon, even after being watered in the morning. Once I put the bottles in, the wilting stopped!

Ronna, Glad you're okay. Getting our ego's bruised is the worst part. LOL

On the sentence: I even have a few extra large plants that need homes. Be careful what you post, you will have more DG'ers knocking at your door then you want. LOL

Kristi, all of your plant combinations are lovely. You have quite a knack for great combinations.

Thanks for the soda bottle trick, Ronna. I'm sure I will be using it!

2pugs I have more then enough to go around. :) for pickup. I just HATE to mail a lot of plants. I'm never organized enough to get it all together. As it stands now I owe someone cuttings of Golden Lady via mail. I have hopes to get that out tomorrow. I intended to mail in the fall. This is how bad I am. On the plus side. I NEVER forget.

You do better then me because I forget. If I don't get something done as soon as I say I will, forget it, because I probably have forgotten it.

What marvelous combinations! Are you planting all of them in the same pot with the Brug or in pots up next to the Brug? Or both?

Now a departure from all, Datdog..............way up on this tread there was a dog. By any chance is that an Affenpincher? It was had to tell by his smile.

Karry I plant in the brug pots. I also group containers together so they put on a good show.

Here are a few on the deck area. I try to plant like planters on either side of the door.

Molly is just darling, and your plant photos are just gorgeous!
Thanks for all the ideas.

The patio area. This was taken in Sept. and everything was going strong. If you group things together it really adds a great focal point.

Kristi, I just keep going back and looking at your pictures. They are all so beautiful. You really have a knack for putting your flower combinations together. I was at a local nursery this morning and saw some blue pots similar to yours. I was so tempted to purchase at least 1 of them, but I have so many pots already, that DH would have thought I'd lost my mind. But then, what does he know? LOL
