Under planting brugs

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

What are some of your favorite plants to add to brug pots? I have the best luck with full sun coleus, sweet potato vine, caladiums, and impatients. I've tried many different type but most can not hold up to all the watering the potted brugs get.

This planter did not turn out looking too nice but the coleus did well.

Same planter the year before. This planting turned out beautiful but the brug did not do good.

Petunia's only do good the first month or so that I plant them.

Kristi ... those were absolutely beautiful.

How creative you are!!!

This is my favorite planting with a brug.

Thanks ladies. Do you guys under plant? If so please add a list of your flowers or folaige plants. I need ideas. I'm just a annual flower buying junkie! I go crazy and buy way too many each year. Most of the time I just stuff plants in the pots because I've run out of room in other places. Not too much planning on my part.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Love that last one, blue pot with whites and red, plus variegated brug. I never underplant. DH went nuts one year making me double wrought iron shephards' hooks. I had to buy all kinds of plants to put in hanging baskets.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Datdog, I have 4 big pots this year and I hope they look 1/2 as good as yours! I'll be happy with that. I planted same material: petunias, coleus, potato vine, + purple wandering jew, variegated wandering jew (can't remember variety name) and gomphrena. When petunias peter out I will buy some more or replace w/ periwinkle and/or dianthus--whatever is out there.

If I may be so bold, I thought, like you, peach brug w/ magenta petunia NOT the best combination. Making note to self not to do that.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

No...but the peach might look pretty with deep purple petunia...?

:~)

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Those are so pretty Kristi. Last year I planted Petunias in my two barrels but they got straggly mid summer so I won't use them again.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

Beautiful Kristi! I am going to try caladiums(sp). Joelle

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

I was just thinking (Strange creature that I am) That if you underplanted with something that fixed nitrogen, your brugs would be very happy. I know peas and beans do but not sure about ornamentals.. maybe sweet peas? Or are they too straggly for underplanting..they vine yes? hmm not goo to have the sweet peas vining up the brug I guess.. will keep thinking..lol

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Funny about the potato vine - I used them last summer, and one all but covered the patio. Yesterday, I repotted the Brug, ans found three huge red potatoes one the size of a football, much to my surprise.
I love caladiums and little "Bells a Million" petunias.
Also, several of the Wave series in purples and lavenders to go witht he pinks.
I bought a big package og hanging basket plant seeds, and I am planting them in each of my Brugs that I repot.
Plus some Lily and Jap Iris bulbs.

Whatever I have left over from my greenhouse supply. Last year it was coleus and potato vines. One year, I use torenia in a pot, and it worked very well. I also used New Guinea Impatiens last year and they were excellent (thanks Monika).

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I won't under plant in a pot again, neither the coleus or the brug did well, the coleus got too much water, and there was never enough for the brug. I'm planting the brugs in the ground and New Guinea impatiens and coleus in pots and, or in the ground but not too close to the brugs, and hope that lots of my perennials return. I'm nutz for pentas and have 6 of the new reds, hope they do well...

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Dat, I love all of your choices of plants...this year I'm going to do this too. I especially like the one you said was your favorite one. What is the white tiny flower's overflowing from the 4th pic you said was your fav.??? It's precious, I love how you arrange them.

i meant to ask about the white flower also. very pretty.

Dat, Just beautiful and I was making some plans to do the underplanting but in seperate containers on top of the soil. Your photos have given me the inspiration to attempt them this summer. Thanks for sharing. You have quite the eye for companion planting.

I'm not sure, but it looks like alyssum. Smells good if it is. Think I'll try some this year.

It does look really nice. It could also be White Lobelia. I guess we will have to wait and find out. :-)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Whatever it is, Kristi is really good at putting plants together to make a great display.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Yes she does! The High School here in Harlem (Ag. Class) is having their annual flower sale and I went and picked up some of what Kristi has lol...hope you don't mind me stealing your ideas, but you have made it irresistable not to! I got some yellow & green coleus, not sure of the name...all the teacher's got to the purple one's before me grrrrrr lol...Walmart has them I'm sure, and I got some impatients, and petunia's...the climbing kind. I'll check Wally world for the sweet potatoe vine, caladiums, and whatever you call those yellow and white tiny daisie looking ones, and the tiny white ones as soon as Kristi can see this post and give the names of them.

Way to inspire Kristi!!!

Julie

One more question...Kristi do you just pot them into the dirt inside the brug dirt? Or do you just set the little individual cells in there with them ....I've seen that too just turned sideways and let it drip over the pot. Also would like to know the little tiny pink ones like the white one's that are falling over the pot. LOL

I think that all your containers are lovely and the underplantings add so much extra color and pizazz!

Do you buy the underplantings or do you grow them from seed?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

As always,I love the way you display your plants!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

they're gorgeous
You have a great eye
I've never tried planting stuff together with the brugs on purpose
But I just might now......

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

They're beautiful, Kristi

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

The white flower is lobelia. I love it, but it doesn't do well here once it gets hot, which in South Texas is pretty darn early.

Goshen, OH(Zone 6a)

Just came in from the yard for a break, making yet another new bed. This is the first day in weeks we haven't had cold and wet weather so I just had to start a new project, but anyway what a nice break I took, Kristi the pic's are wonderful I never thought to underplant the brugs how it draws your eye to the container. Well I surely will try this also and hope they come out as sensational as yours .

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thanks everyone. Just stick the plants in and you can't go wrong.

Shirley1md- I buy all of my annuals. I don't start too many plants from seeds anymore.

The plant in the blue container is a lobelia. They die out very quickly from all the water the brugs need in pots.

This one did really good all summer.

I love the old wash tub. What did you just set your pot in the tub or did you plant your flowers in the tub. It really is a sight. I love it.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

LOVELY!

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

They are just planted in the tub. I've had this for 10 years and have been using it as a planter the whole time. So far no rust problems.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I'm not sure but I think a lot of the old wash tubs were galvanized. If that isn't right what were they made out of???? Does anyone know.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

They are galvanzied but so many of them still rust out. I bought a double one when I was at my mom's one year. It's BEAUTIFUL... Too bad my mom is in Kentucky and I have NO way to get it here.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

I never thought of that- to much water for the underplantings. Do caladiums like lots of water? Thanks Joelle

New Hyde Park, NY(Zone 7a)

oh that is beautiful

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Wow, now wouldn't some of the brilliant blue lobelia look awesome in the bottom of a white planter with a pink brug in it?
