safe plant

Rogers City, MI(Zone 4b)

Hi, I am looking for a vine or hanging type of house plant that I can hang over my cockatiels cage. It would have to be safe for birds. I would like them to be able to chew on the parts of the plant the might hang inside the cage, while most of the plant is outside. Any ideas. Thanks ahead of time. Gail

I don't know how successful nasturtium would do indoors, but it does drape down and it is edible with a spicy flavor. Should it bloom, the flowers are good, too.

Try checking out some of the links in this search

What kind of bird do you have? I don't know much about birds so I didn't search for a specific bird. Try replacing the word bird with parrot or parakeet, or whichever bird you have and see if the plant lists change at all. You can also try a bird aviary or bird organization that should be able to recommend safe plants.

Even if a plant is safe though, it might not be safe if you fertilize it with something toxic to birds, which could be the case with any plant you buy.

Edited to say oops and sorry - here are links for cockatiels

Thank you so much. It had lots of plants I can use. Weezingreens nasturtium are safe. Thanks to you both for the great info. Gail

You might try some edible pod green beans also for a vining effect.

If peas are OK, there is a variety called Super Sugar Lace. The pods are edible and the habit is a bit bushier than most.

I would stick with the nasturtiums as some beans are poisonous at certain stages.
At least with the nasturtiums Weezingreens suggested, all parts are edible.
