California forum?

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Would it be possible to add a forum for California Gardeners?

Thanks,

Kathleen

Northern California, CA

Ditto! Ditto! Ditto!

Does that count as 3 votes? LOL

I've kept quiet while the Texas Forum has flourished and now Michigan has its own forum.

We have some fairly unique situations and thousands of micro climates within California.

Perhaps other CA members will speak up and join to rally round a California Forum.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Candy. And we are a huge state!!!

Oh, good, some supporters! Can we advertise somewhere? :-)

Talk about micro-climates -- at our last place I think we were in three different zones!

It would also be a nice place to discuss which companies ship to CA -- it drives me nuts when I read about a great web site only to find out they can't ship here. I've learned that the first thing to do is check the shipping page. We're landscaping with natives, but do have some 'special' potted stuff around the house.

Tell all your friends!

Well we could do an internal email to all California members, but that kind of bugs me and it would be a tedious process. What about posting a short off-topic message to each of your favorite existing forums to drum up some support?

Kathleen - same experience for me with the shipping issue....I also now check for the "We Will NOT Ship to Ca" before proceeding to drool on websites offering exotic plants that NEED to grow in my garden.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Errrr.....cross-posting the same message to multiple forums is permitted on a limited basis - I'd recommend that you-all pick one or two forums and post a link to this thread. ;o)

Northern California, CA

Oh Terry I also agree with that, I've posted one cross-post to the Cactus & Succulent Forum as there are quite a few CA members and I'm not sure they visit this little corner of DG.

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Where do I go to say I miss some of the Texas gardners and try to get over there as some of their growing conditions match mine.

Same goes for California. SOME of you have some of my gardening conditions and some of yu differ so much from each other you might as well be different countries. I'll probably end up missing you too.

I guess you guys are just trying to get a CA. forum going, right!? I kind of agree with Blooms...with CA being such a large state, there are so many different climates...would we really have enough in common with one another as far as growing conditions go?

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

A yes vote!

I think a California forum would be fabulous for those of us who occupy this varied chunk of land.

I'm game, too then....it would be nice to have others to talk with and maybe meet with who live kind of locally!

I've been thinking about this for a long time. So glad you all posted this. I vote yes...

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

IT would be great to add that here! I sometimes go to that (gulp) 'other' site to check a few forums including the California one but am annoyed by all the adverstising so it would be great to have that here instead.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Calif_Sue, I go over THERE sometimes, too -- but it's just not the same as DG. That's why I thought I'd ask if we could do something similar.

We do have lots of different climates -- but it would be a little easier to find folks with the same or similar circumstances. And I really think we would all continue to visit our other plant/subject specific forums anyway.

Blooms, nobody has to miss anybody! Everyone will still be here -- don't be sad! It's just sometimes you want to go to the corner store instead of the supermarket. :-)

Valley Village, CA

I vote yes also, and would like to join if you would have me. At least we could trade with each other and don't need to be worried where we can mail or not. Norma

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

Definitely a YES vote from Central San Joaquin Valley

I'm in!.........besides I keep reading about a round-up here and a get-together there.....always half way across the country! We can meet and trade "locally" here by getting to know each other on a CA forum! YAY!

Karen

(Norma....are you kidding? Where would we BE without you! We NEED you!!! :~D)

Thanks Dave! We love you, man.

Thanks, Dave!

Just finding this post after viewing a post in another forum. I would definitely vote yes, but see that our wonderful Dave has already created it. Thanks so much Dave.

Thank you Dave!

Thanks Dave! Now it's our job to keep it alive and growing.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Does this mean that all the cool cactus and succulent entries will be focused in the California forum? :(

Northern California, CA

Not a chance MaryEv......Cactus & Succulents will still be my favorite forum. See ya here (the California Forum is for CA residents and all visitors are more than welcome too!) and over there too!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you for the reassurance. That is my favorite place to go, too.

I was under the impression that it was illegal to send or bring any plants in or out of CA. I have some dahlia tubors I want to send a friend, but I don't want to get arrested. Can anyone clear that up for me?
Happenstance seems to be everywhere!

Thanks for the invitation. I will visit often. I have learned a lot from you guys and lots of the plants you grow prosper here as well. Visit our Texas Gardening Forum sometime.

Here's a link to some information which applies to commerce and private citizens whether the plant material is shipped commercially, by US Mail, Fed Ex, etc., by truck or brought in via your private vehicle. In other words if it crosses the state line in any manner:

I have actually had one of my (incoming) plant trades opened and inspected by the CA dept of Food & Ag. They taped it back up, placed their stamp on it (so I would know who opened the package) and sent it on to me. It came through just fine.......BUT......the person at the other end did a fantastic job of packaging it. Here is what I do now......I wash all soil off the roots; wash the leaves with a mild soapy water (to eliminate pests if there are any); wrap the roots in clean, moist spaghnum moss then wrap in a plastic bag (so roots and moss are visable); tag the plant with botanical name and place in box with padding of some kind. Hopefully I'm not breaking any laws! I'm going to check that link above!
