Posting Your Zipcode

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I kind of don't understand. : /

Submiting your zipcode for a plant means what? It's hardy in your area or just that it'll grow there?

Like... hmm.... how about annuals? I shouldn't put my zipcode b/c it won't survive the winter?

I queried the help desk about this very thing a few months ago, and suspect that Terry wouldn't mind me sharing her answer to me then:

Dear Donna,

If a plant can successfully complete its lifecycle in your zone, you should add your ZIP code to the entry. That includes annuals that fare well in your zone, thriving from last frost until first frost; as well as perennials and woody plants (trees and shrubs) that are reliably hardy year-round.

Hi Terry and Dave! :)

While I've already made 20 or so zip code reports in the PDB, I've been reluctant to add my zip code to any plant that was not well established in either my yard or a neighbor's (such as trees, shrubs, perennials). I'd dearly love for my now 2' tall rosemary and tarragon plants to be perennials, but will only know for sure next spring.

Is it useful to report that something grows well in my zone if it is only during a portion of the year? For example, summertime here in Spokane vs. non-summertime if I moved back to Phoenix.

Thanks,
Donna

Perhaps this will help in the short term. :)

It helps in the long term! Thanks

I had never been in this forum before, other than in the last 10 minutes, but I have been thinkin on this one.

Might I suggest that you change the zip code thingy to indicate whether it grows outside in a zip code? Or soemthing of that sort- I have noticed some people post a zip for an area that is VERY DEFINITELY NOT a tropical zone, yet they list it under tropicals, etc.....

IMHO, anything can grow (almost) if it is in a nice warm comfy home at 75 degrees or so. BUT will it survive outside? So, what if you were to put a little click box to make inside or outside in any given zip?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

OldeOake, no doubt! Folks shouldn't enter their zip unless the plant can be grown outdoors for a full life cycle, like Terry says. Shoot, some tropicals don't survive in my house, LOL!

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I'm holding off on adding my zipcode on my newly planted things until they've proven themselves through a year.

I'm hoping to add a whole lot!!!

I've found the zipcode reports to be really useful. I can bug someone in my zone for help with particular plants.

Would it be hard to clarify the standard (below) on every page into something a little more direct? Or would it have to be done one page at a time? (Forget that!)

"Does this plant grow in your area? If yes, please give us your zipcode (U.S. only) so that other members in your region can benefit from your experience."

What would be the best way to tweak those directions? Just add "outside" after the word "grow?" Maybe put "outside" in bold letters?

"Does this plant grow outside in your area? If yes, please give us your zipcode (U.S. only) so that other members in your region can benefit from your experience."
