How do you germinate Datura Seeds??? HELP!!!

I MUST KNOW!!! But I don't...ha ha ha ha

How do you germninate these? The only ones I've ever seen germinate are the ones that came up by themselves (after winter in the spring). Do these seeds need cold treatment? Maybe I'm impatient? How long must I wait??? I have collected just about every kind..enough to have a Datura farm. I can germinate just about anything..But these seeds got me stumped!

maybe you have a weird strain of datura...please send all seeds to me and I will let ya know how they do. :D hehehe

Purple and white ones are easy for me. Just pop them into moist seed starter - they are up in about a week. However the yellow ones are hard for me. I have tried three different times this year and still no luck. Oh, I do bag them up until they sprout.. good luck

I am having problems with germinating the datura seeds, too. This year I soaked the seeds in H2O2/water but only 2 germinated out of 12. Should the seeds be on a heat mat? I did not since the seeds germinate outside after winter in huge amounts.... I don't like the lavender ones because the flowers seem to have very little fragrance. I wish I had more advice. I will try putting some in flats out in my greenhouse so they can go through the freeze/thaw.... at least for a short while. hmmmmm.... seems many people are able to get them to germinate easily. Light? Dark????

I have had no problems wrapping them in a damp coffee filter, putting them a ziploc baggy and taping them to a sunny window. I have no idea what the science there is but it works.

Hmmm sounds good to me..I'll give them one of my concoctions..Doing the baggie thing too...LOL

Old method, plant in plain potting soil, cover with 1/4 inch soil keep damp in a corner of your garden, under a bench.
Forget about them, cause everybody says they are "iffy"
Just about the time your getting ready to post pictures on the ID forum, it dawns on you that every single cell has sprouted purple stemed daturas.
They were planted on about the last day of frost in Feb. here.

I've had success similar to the coffee filters but useing paper towel damped, and folded with the seeds in between. In approx a week I begin to see tiny roots sprouting from the seeds at which point I plant them. In just a very short time(a few days) I have plants. Any seeds not showing the root sprouts stay in the paper towel until (if) they sprout. Doing it this way stops me from having to watch pots wondering if and when the seeds will do what we are wishing for. Just remember to NOT let the toweling dry out.

pink blush???? now you have my interest as most daturas only come in lavendar white yellow and purple mixed.


you sure you got datura seeds and not brug seeds?? Not saying you dont know your seeds but some people will label brug seeds as datura seeds and vice versa.

Everyone says they have never seen a pink datura. But there definitely is one. These are definitely datura seeds and not Brug seeds. I will find the picture I have of one and post.

Well..I believe it is Stramonium... The worst that can happen is they wont bloom pink blush...LOL Time sure will tell!!! ha ha haaa

zone 7 is 10 to 20 above freezing. I live just down the road in St Peters (zone 6, 0 to -10)
and it frequently gets below freezing here.

Never gets below 10 where I'm at...hmmmmm. Where I sit on the map tells me I'm 6b-7a..also plants labeled zone 7 and some 8 come back every year for me.

has it opened yet?? it looks pretty so far. bloom lots little one so kimhas planty to share. HEHE

OMG!! That is beautiful!! I need one of those. LOL!!
I have grown the purple and white double one for years. The best way I have found is:
1. Remove the seed pod from the plant and when ready remove the outer shell.
2. In early spring, plant the whole seed pod in the center of a 6" pot. Cover slightly with soil, about 1/4 inch.
3. Place in a sunny window and within a week they should start popping up. As they pop up, place them in their own seed pack cell or 4 inch pot.
Continue to do this until nothing else comes up. I usually plant one seed pod and have over 100 plants. Looks like every single one comes up.
A botanist explained this to me once, I don't remember the technical terms, but basically, the pod breaks down and releases a rooting hormone that stimulates the seeds to grow, or something like that.
Anyway, works great for me!!!
Try it and let me know if it works for you.

Did I miss something? Where oh where are these pink blush found? I search internet - not much luck. I need them, also. My life just won't be the same without them! LOL! Very interesting thread! I still only have two of the white daturas up. No more seeds! Is there a better than average place to purchase seeds? I can't find them locally.

mdeano check out J. L. Hudson, Seedman. He has a very extensive list of daturas. It is worth it to pay a little more to get the seeds that have been pretreated with GA-3. I recently purchased nine different daturas. All packets contain roughly 50 seeds @ $3.00 each ($1.00 more for the pretreatment). Shipping for the whole batch is only $1.50. I have ordered datura seeds before from Hudson that were pretreated and got about a 95% germination rate. I had daturas everywhere lasy year. Really love them. By simply sticking them in a pot with some unknown sedum...... and Voila!!
