Thought I would tell you what happened here today. I noticed smoke west and south of our place today, but figured the farmer was burning something off. All day, it smoked like crazy and moved more north as the day went on. I asked Jim if I should call the fire dept. because it had burned a lot. He told me he thought it was a farmer doing a controlled burn. Well, around 5 tonight, someone called the fire dept. I don't know how much was burned off, but it was timber and pasture land and it looks like about 120 acres, maybe more. I feel really bad that I didn't call it in when I first noticed it, but figured it would be called in by someone close if it was bad. Next time, I won't hesitate or assume it is a controlled burn. It was only the width of a 40 acre field from us and very close to a couple of houses, but I couldn't see that because of the hill between here and there. It looks like they have it all out, but a wind could probably still cause some trouble. I might not sleep well tonight and will keep my eyes on the west windows. Fire really scares me. At least it wasn't life threatening as some fires can be.
Funny how we take things for granted.
Oh gosh Shirley! Im glad things seem to be ok now, and so glad no one was hurt! Scarey stuff for sure!
It scares me too, Shirley. Our nearest neighbor likes to burn AT NIGHT, and always seems to pick a time when we've had a windy day. He has 5 acres and we have 3, so he's really close.
Scary Shirley...I know sometimes it is better to go with our feelings!
Got used to them, being a fire chief for five years.
trying again
oh boy another contest...lol...im in

Wow Shirley that was a close call...............no pun intended........so glad no one was injured or property lost....
Dee
Shirley that sounds a little to close for comfort. They do a controlled burns here every year for the Sandhill Cranes refruge. 2 or 3 years ago it got away from them and burned everywhere. They ended up having to call in the Indian Forest Fire Fighters. The specialist. Luckly it didn't get anyones homes but it sure took out some acreage. They were using Helicopters and getting water from everyones ponds that had them.
Count my time in again since I am here
I'm glad to read nobody was injured, but I bet you are shaken up. I hope you can get some rest tonight.
