Hello Everyone,
I'm asking about starting a New Forum here at DG. In searching there are 171 threads on Composting in many different forums and I think it may be a great opportunity for all of us to get together with our creative natures and compile this forum with individual threads. I'm new to DG but have been gardening for some time and this year as Spring is on us and the "GREEN DAY" is tomorrow for this full blooded Irishman, our neighborhood has started a "local" composting with vermiculture, compost bins etc. to add a new bent on "Green", recycling, and organic gardening......
Please let me know what you think and what's possible!
Happy St. Pat's Day to all of you, as we know, everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!
Peter
Composting - Possibly a New Forum
I think such a forum would be good - there are many of us who are active composters/vermicomposters, and we get a fair number of questions from folks who would like to try composting, but they're afraid they'll mess it up and wind up with a smelly mess that attracts rodents and bugs.
You've got my vote. I would love to hear from others who have experience composting.
I could not quite convince my husband that it was a good idea the first year we were married. Fortunately he is a patient soul and tolerated the composting that first year. After we tilled that fall, I hauled out one wheelbarrow of the fresh compost and he was amazed. He then made a beeline for the bin - I never had a chance to use an ounce more of it, he used it all and is a die-hard composter since. It's a great thing to encourage.
Sounds good to me. However I do hope it doesn't turn into a feud over what composting is and how it can or must be done.
good point, leaflady. Hopefully, the normal "mode of operation" (i.e, helpfula and easy-going) of the rest of DG would be experienced in this forum, too.
I'd love to see a composting forum. I have been composting for 3 years, but get very little usable compost every year. I think it's because we have so few months that are warm enough to keep it going well.
I do my composting in piles. I don't have any of the fancy tumblers or anything like that. I've been looking at homemade compost bins on the internet, but I'm not sure that is what I want in my yard either, so for now I've just got piles going. One for each year, and use from the oldest pile first. Sometimes if I get impatient, I spread a pile out onto the veggie garden in the fall and turn it under. :) The worms do wonders with it that way, but I'd love to have enough ready compost to mulch and sidedress with throughout the summer.
Any advice on helping those piles turn to compost faster would be most welcome.
I agree with this suggestion.
I am an avid composter. My wife, children, (and neighbors) think I am sick but that is another story.
I look forward to seeing Composting being added as a forum here.
Good Gardening!
Aubrey
How about we change the "Soil" forum to the "Soil and Composting" forum?
dave
Sounds like a good idea, Dave. :)
