new watchdog comment on old company?

I was wondering if we could revisit the idea of being able to post new ratings to the same company instead of just editing our comments? We've talked about this, and I understand that we don't want anyone to be able to slam or inflate ratings with repeated posts, but sometimes I've ordered once a year from a company and had radically different results. I think it might be usefull if we could post a new comment once a year to the company? Or maybe the comments could bump up to the top of the list when they are updated? Just some thoughts. . .

sylvi,

I recently asked Dave if subsequent comments (tagged onto the old one) could cause that comment to "bubble" to the top, but he looked at it and said it would require some major retooling of the code to make that happen, so it's not likely to be a high priority item. I am hoping that long-term, he'll be able to make it happen, as I personally think that makes the most sense ;o)

For the reason you mentioned, I don't think it's wise to let people post multiple, separate comments to the Watchdog - there's just too much room for abuse, and we are haivng to be vigilant with some less-reputable companies who try all sorts of weird things as it is....

Okay, thanks for checking on it. I saw a couple of those posts that came from the same computer claiming positive things about companies with a bad rating. I guess people will do anything if they think they can get away with it! We sure don't need that happening. Maybe there will be a solution in the future :)

Is it possible for someone to completely delete their comment on the GW? If so, a new one could be entered so the reporter could include all information to date regarding their satisfaction with the company. It would also then be 'on top', so to speak, yet only still represent one vote.

Just curious,

Comments can only be deleted by an administrator. It's possible to do what you're suggesting but (big gulp) - the Watchdog contains more than 17,000 comments from thousands of users.

If a lot of people decide they want their old comment deleted so a new one can go on top, then we're not going to get much else done around here. I'd rather we wait and see if Dave can come up with some new code that allows the old comment to rise to the top when an addition has been made to it....

I wouldn't want my old comments to be lost. I think part of the value is that you can see a record of how companies have changed over time and how they have or have not dealt with unhappy customers.

Ahh, I understand. I'm certainly not trying to increase workload here. :)
