I know, I know, I'm sounding a bit complainy here but should comments be allowed to contain curse words? Is it really conductive to that person's comment about the company?
Maybe you guys just didn't pick up on all of them is all.
Garden Watchdog Comments
I believe it is appreciated if you send an error report in for curse words. (even tho some is deserved)
I don't think there was an error report button on those pages. Maybe I'm wrong.
Any comment comprised of curse words diminishes any impact of the comment, regardless of how valid it might be, and tends to reflect far more about the originator than on their intended target.
:)
In any case, all such things should be reported via the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of each page.
there is also a positive comment from someone who never bought
http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/1737/
should this be allowed ?
We're not going to allow curses anywhere on the site.
Where did you see the curse in the comment?
dave
The positive comment has been removed and the person who posted it was sent a note explaining why it didn't meet our guidelines.
If you can point out the curse words, I'll take care of them.
While I'm on my little soapbox, I would remind everyone that euphemisms (frickin, flippin, friggin) are not something that we should be using here, any more than words that are definitely off-color and violate the AUP.
The sad thing is that Google doesn't update changes to older posts very often, so even if I remove them, they still show up in a Google search for a loooong time, and it reflects poorly on the site and the person who posted it. Please (please please) watch the words you use here (and double-check anything you're copying from an email or another site - jokes tend to be the among the worst offenders for sliding in stuff that shouldn't be here.)
Well it should be said too that one person's 'curse' word is another person's 'innocent comment.'
Sorry, RikerBear, I'm a mom, and I don't buy the "it's all relative" argument. (I didn't buy it from my kids either - they know and respect the house rules when it comes to what they can and can't say.)
Likewise, there is a standard at DG - there always has been. The three words I mentioned are all defined by various dictionaries as widely-accepted euphemisms for a particularly vulgar word. As such, they have no business here.
Than that should hold true for ALL euphemisms being used here on DG.
Poop,Pooh,Crap, Manure, etc.
We all know what the poster really meant. There are a great many such things posted daily throughout the DG forums. Are ALL of these to be deleted as offensive? Most everything is offensive to someone, somewhere.
And I don;t believe I used the 'All relative" argument. I merely pointed out that what some may find offensive as a curse word is in no way meant as such. If that were the case than my 80 yr old mother should wash her mouth out with soap....I heard her say "fudge" yesterday, and we all know what she really meant. :-)
There aren't going to be any arguments about the standards we uphold, RikerBear. If you don't like the standards, you're not being forced here against your own will.
Nobody has yet been banned for their potty mouth. I usually let them know when I've edited there posts, to let them know that the word they used could be considered offensive and should be avoided.
So far, we've had 100% success with keeping the site clean, and I like it that way. :)
Dave
I never said I didn;t like the standards here at DG, so please don;t put words in my mouth. My one and only point was that not all words used will meet the same 'offensive' standards as others, and we ALL should expect from time to time of seeing some we ourselves may have not chosen to use.
If keeping the site 'clean' is what your really after, than can you please delete the threads showing all of those 'nearly naked' pictures of women in their gardens.....The Naked Ladies threads really push the limits in my opinion.
NO Riker, if your mother is 80 years old, she really meant "fudge". That's an old-timey expression that I heard my 94 year old mother use all my life, and she considered "darn" unacceptable slang!
This thread brings back memories of raising teen-agers. I had house rules and they spent a lot of time using teen-age logic to talk me out of them.
Oh what tangled webs they wove,
To justify deeds I did disclose!
LOL
Pati
LOL You may be right hehehehehehe.
Hey, cool titles there, Dave and Terry!
RikerBear, I am not aware of this "naked ladies" thread. It's hard to keep up with 1,000+ posts per day and we rely on reports from our members to help us spot the things that need removal.
Could you please give me a link to this thread in question?
Thanks,
Dave
Thanks
I just want to say thank you Dave and Terry for all of your hard work to keep this site clean. I am constantly bombarded by offensive language, behavior, etc when "out and about". I appreciate having a safe site where I can not only relax on my own, but not have to worry if my kids are reading over my shoulder. Keep up the high standards, they are appreciated. Margaret
Dave .. it's interesting .. when we do exactly, as you request .. to notify you guys of such - and then, subsequently .. we recieve no reply, no acknowledgement .. and, neither is there any correction or 'fix' done !!
Especially when there is absolutely unnecessary but, specific mention .. of some most private human anatomical body parts used in the text !!
I for one .. do not particularly like to bombard your guys with what some may feel is petty .. but then, I can't help but wonder why there are some matters that seem to be deemed far more important, and you DO address far more instantly .. even within the content of the threads! I suppose that you guys are indeed spread mitey thin tho', with DG .. along with the other sites you are hosting.
I'd sent you an email a few weeks ago, via the 'Contact Us' .. giving the direct link to the specific thread and the particular post, that would seemingly be of much concern. I will not post the link here, however ...

I just want to say that the "naked" ladies thread pictures do not consist of actual naked ladies. I've spoken to the ring leaders and they're wearing, bathing suits, shorts, tube tops, etc. I think you can see clothing in a few of the "naked" pictures.
Any who, the curse words is located here, third post down. http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/146/ I don't think it'll be much missed b/c the poster was one of those people who sign on soley for the benefit of a single comment.
It's interesting that this thread caught my eye. I had 3 catalogs sitting on my desk waiting to be looked at.
Finally I did last night. All three had coupons. I looked through and was enticed by all the photos and possiblities of buying some that would survive in my zone.
My last step before ordering was to check the Garden Watchdog. All 3 companies were affilated with each other and one of them had an extremely bad rating. Gurney's is also an affiliate of those companies. I have ordered seeds from them 2 times and it was okay, except not getting the Sugar Ann Snaps. I will consider myself lucky.
They are now in the recycle bin.
Molly
Thanks, CaptMicha - the word has been removed ;o)
Magpye, I sent you an email yesterday regarding the concern you had.
Molly, that is one of the purposes the Watchdog fills. I hope it also helps you and others find wonderful new sources you might have not heard of or tried if not for the accolades of others ;o)
