I'm going to be in Mountain Home, AR through monday. Any DG'ers in the area?
We've pretty much decided thats the area we want to move to and i'm going to go look at a couple different parcels of land.
What an adventure,
Jen
Mountain Home, AR
Hi MSJen, Welcome to Arkansas....you're picking a lovely part of the state to call home. I'm a little south of Little Rock, probably 200 or so miles from Mountain Home. I think Deer, where Magpye lives, is maybe less than 100 miles.
So when can we start calling you ARJen? ;-)
Mary
hehe, thats a good point.
I had my sons spring break confused, its not til next week....so i've put it off a week.
MSJen....didn't see this earlier - but thought I'd tell you - my Mom-in-law and Step-Father-in-law live in Mt. Home. They live on the land her mother and dad owned off of route 5. We are super familiar with the area - DH has been going there since he was a kid and I've been going with him since we were dating - 25 years - and we've seen LOTS of changes. They're mostly for the good....hey - we were super excited that they got a Home Depot! I can say that you are truly going to love it up there - and some day we'll probably retire up there. MIL is only a mile from Lake Norfork - and that is the most pristine lake I've ever been on.....I could go on and on about it. If you want to chat more - email me.
I've tried to get my MIL involved in DG - but she's not tried it yet.....but, maybe I can put the two of you in touch and you can get the scoop on everything from her....FIL will talk your ear off as well.
Good luck and keep me posted. I want to visit when you get up there.
Marcia
Mary and Marcia are right, Jen - Mountain Home is quite a beautiful area!
Although less than 2 hours from us now - that, was one of the areas that we'd first checked out .. when we were property shoppin', back in '96. For us, we'd long decided to get away from any and all 'near to' hustle & bustle, of city and suburban life. We'd looked at quite a bit of varied properties: acreage only, acreage with new and/or older homes, improved and unimproved land, etc. ..
We'd set up our RV in Marshall, AR, as a center point for Thanksgiving week .. and made a big 100 mile radius sweep lookin' at property back then. We could tell more about the lay of the land, features, etc. .. with the land a bit more exposed at the time. A lot of miles were covered in a short 7 day time! So when we found a lil parcel a bit further west - we were in hog heaven! Jes took us a couple of 'come backs' to realize that it had truly took a solid 'hold' on us .. Hee ..
We went 'boat' shopping in Mountain Home .. about a year and a half ago, and was the last time we were over in that area. The place has grown significantly .. and apparently, will continue to do so progressively .. with the lakes right there.
The Home Depot in Harrison, opened jes last year .. about the same time as the one in Mountain Home.
Do believe that there were a few folks that had to drive over to the Harrison Home Depot, to 'train' for Mountain Homes' HDs grand openin' that immediately followed.
Here's some web sites, that may offer a wee lil aid to ya >

Whew,
Just got home from the trip, decided at the last minute to go, lol.....nothing like flying by the seat of the pants, eh?
We bought 11 acres off of 36....take 201 out about 8 miles, left on 99....and its out that way...only one hill that warrants an ear pop, lol....
Gosh, i didnt want to come home ; )
So you did it...that is good news!
How long until the re-location? Is there a house or will you have to build? Nosey rascal, aren't I? lol
Once again, welcome! We will be happy to have you among us.:-))
Mary
I'll start a new thread with a few of the pics.
The only thing it has on it is a few rocks, lol.....perfect pasture land and spectacular views in 3 directions.
Gonna have to put in septic and well, build a barn, fence the property, so we're probably going to put in a used mobile for the time being. I really want to see the seasonal changes before i put in a home.
Off to post pics,
Jen
Am anxious to see them...hope you will post ongoing pictures of all the work and the changing seasons of your new home place.
Pasture land...perfect for horses, I'll bet. ;-) I've noticed in my lurking that you have an affinity for them...how many will be coming with you?
Mary
We have 2 right now, but the mare is coming home from the breeders today : )
Oh! A baby....sweet...how long does it take? And we will want pictures, of course...of the baby, *not* the birthing, thanks! lol
Jen,
Oh - I'm so glad for you! Tom (DH) and I are trying to find the location on a map..just curious to see where you are. Keep us posted and send those pics. Like I said = we get up that way often, so we'll need to do a "meet & greet" sometime.
Marcia
Marcia,
We will be about 3 1/2 hrs from memphis....i dont remember the rte #, tho 283? its exit 26b on 55 w out of memphis ; )
Have you ever been to Hardy? We had to pass through the town and wow, the antique shops were everywhere, seems like it would be a cool place to spend the day plundering.
We don't go through Hardy - we go through Bald Knob and Batesville - been going that way for years and I don't think we could make the cars do anything different! LOL.
I have been to Hardy though and yes - it would be cool to spend the day going through them. Maybe we can plan to do that at some point.
Mountain Village is suppose to be nice too, but I haven't been.
When will you actually be moving? I may have missed that....
M.
mbock .. Is there a Mountain Village .. or, were you perhaps thinkin' of Mountian View (?) .. located just south/southeast .. of Mountain Home ?
Mountain View has jes wrapped up its annual Mountain View Bluegrass Festival. And there are a whole mess .. of other 'festivals' and 'events' scheduled throughout the general northern areas of Arkansas ...
- Magpye
I would like to shoot for Christmas, but this dear DH of my mine is driving me nuts, lol.
I think i did manage to make him see that we dont need the barn and fencing just yet. So, now we've agreed that the main priority is to board the horses, drop a well and septic and then find a cheap place to call home until we can do something more permanant.
I'll keep you posted on the progress. We've got a chunk to pay the state of MS for state taxes, and he'll be home in June for R&R. At that time we'll have to map where we want the house so we'll know where to put the other stuff.
