There are reports from Canada now!
The ruby throated hummingbirds are on the move!
Yesterday, I saw my first female hummer. Two males also came to the feeders. They are so fun to watch!
You guys be sure and report your first sightings at the link above. ;-)
I saw my first hummer of the season on Sunday. It snowed in the morning and then the winds picked up and were gusting to 40 mph, poor thing must have been getting blown around alot. But right on time for me, they always show up just as the buckeye blooms open. Had two males and a female today. Tried to get pictures but they insisted on hiding behind the feeder ... lol. I got this shot of the male in flight but it is not very clear.
I'm in SW Ohio, about 10 miles SW of Dayton.
It is clearly a male! Be sure and report your sighting at the above sighting.
Sobbering!
Don't give up Sidney! Once they find your place they will NOT forget.
Oooh, they are getting close to Minneapolis! Looks like there was a sighting on the 18th around Eau Claire - only a couple hours drive from me. Looks like my feeders are going up this weekend...
Saw my first hummer on Thursday late afternoon, and then again this morning. I have put up all my feeders and am patiently waiting.
I am getting more hummers! Are we having a good good time or what?!
imway~
John:
Lucky you. I'm still waiting.
I'm also still waiting. I don't know if they forgot me, or if it's because we're still getting cold snaps.
Do not give up!
This weekend I felt sorry for the ones here. It has been down to 32 at night. They must have wanted to fly back south
Hey, Imway, thanks a bunch for posting that url. I did report my first sighting, which was 4/17. I was so excited to see him. I know he's been here before because I usually hang my feeder outside my kitchen window from a little chain, but hadn't put one out yet. And that little guy was hovering at the end of that chain, looking in the window at me like, "Hey, where's the food??" Of course, I got it out there to him as quick as I could and apologized for being so slow! :)
I felt like an old friend had come to visit. Hummers are just so cool!
That is how I got hooked on hummers. Same thing happened to me. He flew up to the window a couple times looking in. Felt so bad I had let him down. Rushed right out with his feeder. They have never let me down!
Last year was the first time I'd put out a feeder. I didn't see any hummers until July, but was told that since they found me, they'd start coming back. I hung one of my feeders in the very same spot, and they other not to far from where it was last year, but I still have nothing. Am I going to have to wait until July again? Maybe it will take a few years for them to start returning regularly.
It was probably me that told that, Jennifer. Be patient. Build a hummer friendly garden and they will come, year after year. I guess I was just lucky. Please don't give up! The plants they like are great garden plants, too. :-)
John
p.s., I have heard that living by busy highways can be a problem.
jdee, they will return, keep the food refreshed, just sugar and water, nothing fancy. I wish Mother's neighbor would fill hers since she is gone, that ought to up the price of her home. I miss her and the hummers very much.
sidney
Our street is a short one that ends. The highway isn't a problem. We do, however, have some new to the neighborhood people who like to party late into the night. grrr!! I was ready to blame them, but they don't live that close to me, and they're pretty quiet during the morning time, when hummers are most active. I have salvia planted this year, but I didn't plant any hummer attracters last year.
You should be ok. They are all over my Salvia greggii. They will come!! :-)
John
Today, I was finally able to report my first sighting. I was on the porch with my husband, cutting his hair. I was expressing my concern that I might not have any hummers this year, when I heard that familiar humming of tiny wings. I looked over, and sure 'nuff. There he was. Happy day!!
I only have one concern. I had pretty much given up, and hadn't changed my water for 4 days. Part of me is afraid that if it tasted bad, they won't return. The other part of me remembers the several cool day's we've had in a row. Maybe it was still ok. I've put out fresh water, and hope to see them again, soon.
All will be will be well!! Yahooo for you, jdee.
Thanks. Last year, we used to sit outside and watch them while I cut his hair. We used to see them several times until I was finished, but this guy came by once, and was gone, almost as quickly as he came. It made me wonder how long I've had them and didn't know.
|I saw my first one, then nothing for several days. But hes back and he brought others with him. I'm sure that more will show up shortly.
I was so excited, thinking that I was going to try to get up earlier tomorrow, and sit on my porch to see if he comes back. Now I see the weather forcast says cool and rainy for the next three days. grrr!! I guess I'll have to plan that for another time. lol
Yahoo for defoecat! Report your first of the year at the link above, ok?
Jennifer, did you know its been warmer in Fairbanks, Alaska than here?
imway2dumb, I did report it. Isn't this exciting. Sure sign that spring can't be far away. Really chilly and windy here today. Been outside digging and transplanting anyway. Just acting as if it's 80 degrees.
I hope you're right about spring! Tired of this stuff. ;-)
On a more positive note...my potted primrose has lasted longer than it should. I think that's because of the summer heat being delayed. lol
We didn't get near the rain we were supposed to, and the temp hasn't been as cool as I expected, so maybe I'll be able to watch him again. I did glance out the window, while I was hanging up hubby's jeans, and there he was. So I guess my water wasn't too bad.
That is a positive. A couple more days of it, too.
jdee~
How much do you get for cutting your DH's hair. I've been trying to talk my DDW out of expecting anything in return for cutting mine. I keep telling her that the experience she's getting is good.
LOL!!
I used to be his hairstylist when I was still working. That's how we met. I guess I'm just so happy to not have to work with the public anymore, that I don't want any thing in return. lol
jdee:
That's one romantic story. Did he ask you for a date the first time you "styled" his hair? Which one made the first move, you or he? You know. the movies never had a story with that good a plot.
I cut his hair for 6 years before he asked me out. lol He's 20 years older than me, and he told me that he was afraid to ask me sooner, because he was afraid he was too old for me.....how ridiculous. To be honest, I've always pictured myself with someone older than me.
jdee:
Well, your dreams came true.
And he can't be old. If he still had hair after six years, he's a kid. And he still has enough for you to cut! Heck, you've got it made.
LOL!
Saw the first rubythroat today!. Feeder has been out since the end of April. (And changed frequently) Usually do not arrive here until the CoralBells are blooming, We have a lot of fruit bloom right now, hope they can use that until stuff starts blooming.
Yay, for ya se_eds !! ..
