Hello,
I know this isn't gardening related, but I just had to pass it along. No matter how you feel about the war, our troops are facing hard times and would love care packages and letters from home. Anysoldier.com was started by the mother of a soldier and it is a great way to know what and where to send care packages to our boys and girls over there.
A friend of mine just got back from Iraq after a year, and I was shocked when I saw him. This guy is a tough-as-nails Marine (this was his 4th combat tour), but the conditions in Falluja nearly broke him. He had lost 35 lbs and couldn't stop coughing due to a respiratory condition that he and all his men got while there were there. Hearing stories about how they have to live out there made me nauseous. Their supplies are low, and a lot of there equipment doesn't work correctly. Their vehicles breakdown on streets with snipers looking down on them from the roofs. Scary stuff. They need our love and support!!
So please visit anysoldier.com, pick out a soldier, read his or her letter and send them something. You can make your own care package, or send one of the pre-made ones. Our just send a letter. Anything to help them pass the time, and to let them know we haven't forgotten about them.
Thanks for your help!
Anysoldier.com, a great way to directly support our troops
Thanks for the info!
Terrie
We had a wonderful project here at DG at Christmas...we had a whole company of soldiers that we 'adopted'...every soldier got a Christmas care package, letter and Christmas card made by elementary school students...I'm still in touch with mine and it's been so rewarding.
Great! I have a shipment of comic books (a friend owns a comic book store) going over this weekend.
Also, some stores will give you their old magazines that have been on the shelves for a while if you tell them you are sending them to the troops. Magazines from home are a big hit over there.
As Melody says, the effort is well worth it. You will get warm fuzzy feelings for doing something nice for someone who needs some comfort from home.
....and another big plus is the new Priority mail boxes the post office furnishes....you can fill on as full as you can get it and it will only cost you $7.70 to send....even to APO's and FPO's. Ask for the Special Rate Priority mail boxes. They saved me a lot of $$ at Christmas when we did the fun gift program.
I know I have some more Kool-ties to send, so I'll get busy on one soon. Most of the ones in our thread are ready to rotate back to the States....Thank God! Jo
