Adding a new plant to the database that has the same name

(Zone 5b)

as one previously added?

There are at least two "Sonora" C. annuum and the pictures I added are not the hybrid jalapeņo from Gurney's http://gurneys.com/search.asp?dt=11&ss=sonora&x=15&y=8 but an Anaheim-type such as this one: http://www.tomatogrowers.com/hot5.htm

What should I have done?

Cultivar names cannot be used in the exact same form more than once within the same species under nomenclature rules. I suspect that either one of the Capsicum is misnamed or the cultivar name Sonora has two names in it for one or both of the Capsicum i.e. Sonora Anaheim.

John, it has been a problem as there are many cultivars within a group that have the same common name. If one is a hybrid and the other open pollinated. I usualy just stick F1 after the common name of the hybrid making it sufficiently different to go through. Many open pollinated cultivars are sold under multiple spellings so some times one can use a spelling variant. In the squash section there is a pumpkin and a summer squash with the same name. Have forgotten how I massaged the name but I did get both of them in there. Mulitple spellings do cause problems with duplicate entries, have to call up and screen the entire list to catch them.

It happens all too often. And what's even worse in my opinion are companies that rename an old existing variety for marketing purposes.

Perhaps hybrids should have hybrid is part of their name? Or perhaps in this case rename one of them "Gurney's Sonora Jalapeņo"? Or the one that I grew: "Sonora non-bell" or something.

John; one my sources list your pepper as "Sonora Anaheim - Breeder: K.Owens. Vendor: Petoseed. Characteristics: Large smooth fruit, New Mexico type green chile for fresh market and dehydration. Resistance: Tobacco Mosaic Virus. 1991." Just remember that Petoseed is now Seminis.
Entering it as Sonora Anaheim should solve the problem.

Farmerdill,

Thanks much! That info allowed me to find this: http://cuke.hort.ncsu.edu/cucurbit/wehner/vegcult/peppermz.html Dr Bosland is one of the chile-head super heros. It's downright staggering how many of his collected in the wild capsicums have ended up in my pepper patch.

"Sonora Anaheim" it is. In the future I will be much more careful add photos. Your description should have alerted me from the start.

I kinda remember a Farmerdill from several years back in the AOL gardening forums.
