New Hyde Park, NY(Zone 7a)

if it has your zone listed as being grown there, does it mean during winter months? or are they growing them and bringing them in during winter?

Its my understanding that if a plant is listed as being grown in that zone, its outside all year round. I grow many tropical zone 11 plants inside, but can't say that I grow them in zone 6a. Hope that answers your question.

yes thank you, thats what I figured, but as I was going thru it I noticed some plants that I didn't think grow in zone 7 ( die back and return )

Annuals count too, because some that do well in CA zone9 wouldn't live in LA zone9.

For the most part, it is for plants that live outside all year, but sometimes others are considered..it's a 'gray' area....use your best judgement.

The hardiness information (USDA zones) is intended to be a guideline as to plants that can live year-round in that zone. (They may go dormant, but they are hardy and return the next growing season.) Annuals aren't rated for hardiness because they only last one year, so "n/a" is usually marked for them.

Entering your ZIP code to indicate a plant grows in your area can be for annuals or perennials that do well in your zone. (For example, there are some annuals that do better in the cool PNW area than the sultry south or dry southwest - if we compile that data in the ZIP code/regional reports that will help other gardeners learn what will grow best in their area.

I think some people may have this confused then, because I was looking under hardiness, and that is where I was seeing this information listed, thats why I asked the ? because I just knew some of those things were not surviving my winter's, unless they grew legs and walked out of my yard.

Then those should be reported as errors ;o)

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I thought it was the zip code thing you were speaking of.... I've reported zone errors to the help desk...they correct them quite quickly.

ok dumb ? where is the help desk?

Next time you are in the PF, just click on "Report an error" at the top of the page. That's the helpdesk. :)
