Spell checking???

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

Isn't it possible to have spellcheck work inside DG using each member's own dictionary? I'd like that a lot!

Here's what I use, it's free, I installed it probably 8 mons. ago and haven't had any problems. After it is installed, it will be an option under Tools, on the tool bar and under the "right click" menu for IE.

You MUST use Internet Explorer for ieSpell to work. ieSpell will not work with the Mozilla Foxfire browser (I think Mozilla is correct? Not every word is in the dictionary, but you have the option of adding words that you use a lot. I'm too lazy to check if Mozilla is correct or not).

I use ieSpell all of the time, it's great!

One thing that ieSpell won't do is make sure you use the correct usage of a word. It won't correct the word "to" to "too" if that is the correct form that should be used in a sentence. I also typed "think" as the second word above, instead of "thing" and ieSpell won't catch those mistakes either. Bummer. It's best to re-read your posts before submitting them.

For Firefox:

It sounds risky, but I might try it myself one day.

Well I guess I have a very un-techy way of doing it. I will just copy and paste my post into Word and do a spell check. Then, after making the changes, I copy and paste it back into the preview "your message" space and preview it. Then send it away. If you read my posts, you will see that I don't ALWAYS do this. Ha! But I think I will download one of those programs and see what happens.

Jaime,

Let us all kow...

Now all of us DG's are the best spellers!
I remember that post about a year ago that was all misspelled on purpose. Everyone was able to read it.
If all else fails, I have a little spelling dictionary handy.

ewww... a spelling dictionary --- how primitive when we have all powerful computers at the tips of our grubby soil-stained fingers.

Another option may be to receive your Dave's Garden through the Thunderbird email system. Thunderbird has a spellchecker.

TUCSON, AZ(Zone 9a)

Can I ask what is Thunderbird ?? I have never heard of this. Were would I find this? :)))))

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

binky --- I googled to here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

I looked at that Thunderbird, but will it work INSIDE DG email???

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

No, it will not. DG Mail is browser-based at the DG website. Thunderbird is an e-mail program in the same type as Outlook or Pegasus, where you download your mail to your computer. IEspell will work with DG mail if you use Internet Explorer. If you use Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, etc. there are other spellcheck alternatives.

TUCSON, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the info. I am going to read up on it now. :)))))))

Millersburg, PA(Zone 6b)

gardenwife, I thought it would, but it doesn't. Thanks for correcting that quickly. I didn't realize DG Mail is browser based, but I really don't understand too much about computers.

I use Dave's Garden as a home page in Firefox and know I don't seem to have a spell chcker there.
(This is one of the few things I don't like about Firefox.).

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

There was a spell check available in the message preview for a short period of time.

I thought it was kind of handy, even though it wasn't always right, and wondered what happened to it.

Too much of a server load or something?

Yep.

Within Firefox 1.0 and higher as well as Thunderbird you can use the "Spellbound" spellchecker http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/install
though installation is not "easy" and does require several steps to be completed for it to work.

Count me out!

Panamon Creel, Much as I love the information you provide, this would be a complete mystery to me.
And I depend on the computer too much to take chances.

Does any one use microsoft word? It has a spell check.

I use MS Word. My point was I'd like a spell checker that works INSIDE DG email and forums.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

LOL sorry to scare you folks with the not "easy".
If you follow the instruction given on the link then you're almost there. But if you follow the instructions even to the letter the Spell checker still may not show up in Firefox (they explain how to make it show up in their FAQ) and the installation of the dictionaries is also not well explained.
I can help you out if you want to try within this thread but would prefer if we continue in the "Computer Talk" forum if assistance is needed (sorry I can be picky in regards to subject/forum matters)

Here a little pic of the Firefox Spell checker I mentioned so that you know what it looks like :)

So to use this spellchecker I hafta use Firefox itself?

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Yes it works within Firefox and/or Thunderbird, so you can use it if you are using Firefox to browse DG and write "Inter DG" mail. If you are using Internet Explorer then you'll have to use the IEspell utility mentioned above by sadiemaewebb.

I use AOL so I'm probably out on all accounts!

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Don't you use Internet Explorer as your AO Hell browser?

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

"AO Hell browser"

huh?

AOL is its OWN browser, but maybe you mean IE based?

???

Steve

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Yes that's what I meant, download IEspell and see if it works within the AO(HEL)L Browser. It's been a very very long time ago when I've worked with one of their Browsers so I do not know what they are using these days. Way back then their browser caused lot of problems (maybe they still do) thus the name AOHell.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

You don't have to use AOL's cruddy stuff, you can connect with AOL and then open Internet Explorer or whatever browser you choose. Just be certain to keep up on all your Windows Updates. I'm not a big AOL fan, either. Too proprietary and quirky...Doesn't play well with others. Runs with scissors, that sort of thing. ;)

That's what I'm saying...LOL

Actually, there are programs which will let you back up and convert your favorite places and your address books.

Vee haf veys of mekking AOL talk...
