Hey all you DGers in Central Ohio,
DeMonye's Nursery in Columbus is having their yearly perennial sale on April 15, 16, and 17. They sell perennials in 4-packs for $1 or a flat of 48 for $12.00. There will be over 80 varieties and you can mix and match them.
Also for the month of March a flat of pansies is half off for a cost of $7.99, limit 3 flats.
No, I don't work for them. It is just such a great way to buy perennials in bulk. Of course since they are in 4-packs each plant is quite small but by the end of the season they are large and healthy. Not bad for a quarter apiece.
DeMonye's yearly perennial sale
I JUST figured out how to get you here for the Ohio RU! I'll come to the plant sale, pick you up and keep you at my house for a week. You can pay rent by watching the girls!! LOL So, what do you think? :) Really, how far are you from Columbus? As far as I remember, Columbus is about 1.5 hours for me.
Although my mailing address is Reynoldsburg I am actually part of Columbus - the last street on the far east side. I know this because I pay Columbus taxes. LOL
I have an even better idea. You come here for DeMonye's sale, stay here for a week and help me dig up all my plants for trading, and then give me a ride to the RU. Oh wait a minute. There's just one problem with that....I don't want to have to walk home.
Seriously, I have a friend up here who is interested in going to the flower show so it sounds like I will be able to make it. I haven't been to an official RU but last year met a bunch of DGers at a mini RU. We met at DeMonye's sale and then went to Lupy's house. It was great fun. That is how I got to meet GW who is as wonderful in person as she is on line!
noh20, could you tell where the nursey is? i live about 80 miles, east of columbus. i would like to go? belinda
Hi Belinda,
The address for deMonye's nursery is:
2500 Airport Drive
Columbus, Oh 43219
phone 614-252-6046
You can go here to get maps and driving instructions: http://maps.yahoo.com/dd
Are you going to the Ohio Roundup in Cincinnati?
LOL Do you have room for me and all six kids??
Sure, When my parents moved in here they had 7 kids ranging in age from 10 months to 17 years. It was much cleaner then too - lots of slave labor. Now it's just me and my mom and all we seem to do is attract dust and clutter. That is one of the reasons I am anxious to meet you. I can't figure out how you do all you do. Where do you get the energy?
**Correction: we have plenty of room for 6 kids but not enough beds anymore!**
This year I think we're skipping the plant sale. Can't believe I'm saying that! But it's true...We've got SO much we need to do in the yard and I can't even think about buying plants until we have all our current plants and their beds in good shape. Pthbt!
I don't know if I am going either, GW. Last fall my back fence was replaced so I had to cut everything down to the ground. Then new post holes were dug, clay was piled on all the perennials and the rains came before I could move it off. I don't know what I will find there next spring. They were tough plants but being under clay and water all winter might do them in. So I know I have a lot of clean up to do when the soil dries plus I've ordered daylilies and dahlias on co-ops here. And I figure I will have my hands full digging up plants for the RU trading. I am half looking forward to spring and half dreading it. LOL
I remember the water problems you had there! You could always make bricks...we could have a hypertufa party!
I think I am better at mud pies......lots of experience there. ;^)
DeMoyne's sounds too good to be true! Will they have purple-y Pansies on sale? Cheaper to buy them there than try to grow them myself! (I want those pretty amethyst colored ones with little faces.) Have to have my yard looking nice for the RU.
noH20, we'll get you down here for the RU one way or the other...
See this picture (below) --this is where I need the pansies, or other Swap 'scores' from the RU--just so everybody knows what I need! ;-) . My idea of a swap: If you bring me a plant, I will swap you a 'Mint Julep' or a 'Long Island Lemonade' at the RU! Just kidding.
(Badseed--is it time to put up the RU Plant Swap thread or should we wait until GWife puts the finishing touches on the RU webpage? ;-) ) Suppose we should check with GW....
Of course, Badseed, now that you have that fancy greenhouse you won't need to buy plants...and BTW did you save a shelf to rent to me? I started my seeds yesterday and they are taking over my kitchen....'bells of ireland', eggplant 'bianco', zinnia 'envy'...
NoH20, thanks for posting the DeMoyne's Sale. It's really giving me spring fever!
Can't wait for the RU too! Hope everybody can come---that means you, Daylily, too! It's not a bad drive from Cochocton at all, and we will give you lots of intersting gardenmania 'rest stops' along the way to make your trip lots of fun!
May see you at DeMoyne's, if not, the RU, everybody. take care. t.
tabasco, I don't know what pansies they will have at their March sale. The picture on the front of the postcard they sent is full of purple pansies but I don't know if that means they will have them every day in March. Also, I just noticed the part on the back of the postcard that posts the pansy sale is surrounded by dotted lines as if it were a coupon. It doesn't say anything about bringing it in to qualify for the sale though.
They will have tons of pansies available at the perennial sale but the pansies themselves will not be on sale. Their pansies are beautiful and they have a large selection but the prices are high when they are not on sale. . you can definitely do better elsewhere.
The April 15 - 17 sale is for the perennial 4-pack for a dollar. If you have lots of space to fill, you can't beat it. Between Bluestone's 3-packs and deMonye's 4-packs I have pretty much filled my yard over the years and now don't have room for 4 of the same type of perennial.
deMonye's also has a huge selection of perennials in a variety of sizes. These won't be on sale that weekend but are definitely worth looking at since they often carry plants that other nurseries don't.
Anyone who is coming into town for deMonye's should check out Oakland Nursery (probably Columbus' biggest nursery) and also The Anderson's General Store if you don't have one near you. They carry a huge variety of plants at reasonable prices, including many unusual perennials. If you are coming in from the east and haven't seen Wilson's Garden Center in Newark, it is great too. It has beautiful display gardens.
OK thanks for the Sale Details. Sounds good. And thanks for the tips on other Garden Centers and Nurseries....you certainly have quite a collection up there.
Is it snowing there today? It's coming down like crazy here. t.
Snowing buckets here...I like it. As long as it's winter, I'd rather have it white than muddy.
Amen.
I heard Mint Julep and Long Island and I slammed on the breaks. LOL NOT buy plants? Surely you jest! I have a certain dilemma about buying plants. If I have to take the kids to buy them, there is not much room left. I think I am going to build a shelf for the trunk so I can fit two layers of plants in there. bwa ha ahahah ha! And, of course I'll save you room in the greenhouse. LOL I'll just have to kick your stuff out if mine gets out of control. : P
A couple of people have asked about plant trading so I can go ahead now or whenever you think the web thing will be ready.
Oh, I have wet AND muddy. I refuse to flatten the yard until I am completely ready to sod it, which means I have to get it all cleaned up. Anybody up for some hard labor for a day or ten??? Hey, I can try.....
I think the Cincy roundup organizational stuff should be in threads, myself. One for Plant Trades one for Food Arrangements one for Official Head Count, etc. The page I'm working on is basically the info about the general event and events/activitites around the area, not a lot of nitty gritty details.
Hi, again, BS and GW, No, and all
--whenever you're ready to post a Swap thread go ahead and then we will add The RU Web page link to your opening post when GW gets it ready--I was just hoping the Web page could have a link to your Plant Swap thread and we could bring it all on at the same time--kind of a Media Blast---is that making any sense?!?
I will post the Reservations/ Arrangements Thread and Hugahosta will do the Food chat thread. Does that sound OK?
Well, I guess you can tell that I am concerned about the PR for the RU. lol I noticed some 'Texoma' RU threads are taking up the first page on the Roundup Forum list and the Ohio R.V. RU has been pushed to the second page!!! boo hoo. what if nobody comes?!
Badseed doesn't know it, but I've been offering private tours of her GH as the Grand Prize for the RU--and the winner is allowed to pick any plant they want from her collection. After the groupies she's gathered from her RION Greenhouse thread--they all want to come and get a close up look. Next the reality TV show!
I've called the Cincinnati Enquirer to come over and get some pics, too.
If I buy a lot of plants at the DeMonye sale and give them growth hormones will they be big enough to Swap at the RU?
Keep me posted...t.
Folks can always bump the threads by posting to them. The best advertising will be word-of-mouth and personal invitations. I will get something up tonight or tomorrow...Might not have all the pictures and bells-n-whistles, but the links will be there.
The snow that is coming down horizontally is currently covering up any potential plant trades I may have.....*sigh**
What RION greenhouse thread?
Go look on the Greenhouse Forum...
okey dokey
Candy I have this great idea just buy me three or four flats of perrinals and ship them to me or better yet bring them on de plane with you it is time for your spring visit is it not.
Sorry I haven't answered your E mail I know I have been a Bad Toad lol. Ernie

Hi Ernie! It's good to hear from you. No spring visits from me - I can't afford to leave town that time of year. I have too much work to do. Plus the Cincinnati Round Up is at the end of April. I am hoping to make it to that.
Besides, with your greenhouse I know you are already growing a million plants on your own. You don't need deMonye's!
Candy your right but I did just extend the lower back yard all along the trees around to the gardens edge another five feet so. Come in August then and see the show or early Sept. I poured concrete in front of the gh and a strip four and a half feet wide all along the backside of the GH to the quail pen now the grass and weeds wont grow up there and I can store my potting soil and junk there in peace lol.
Thinking of kicking out the south wall of the GH and making it 10 x 32 bigger projects projects why me lol. Ernie
Pssst.....if DeMonye's is a place you shop (or have shopped), please give them a review: http://davesgarden.com/go/view/3928/
Thanks for the nudge! I'll do that now.
Candy nope I am not extending the south gh wall . I am building a 20 x 40 steel hoop house arch style . I have the forms in the ground right now for a concrete perimeter and a small slab out front. The inside will have a 10x20 slab at the front and a 2 1/2 foot sidewalk down the center with two 8x30 foot dirt grow areas in side. I think I will put a concrete table and bench set in front to have my coffee breaks at starting July 7th yes you guessed no more working for me no its all my time after that day I guess July really is the month of independance lol. Naw no demoynes trip for me I guess I will grow my own lol. Ernie
Hey, I received DeMonye's postcard and see they've had to raise their prices by a quarter. Now a 4-pack is $1.25, or a flat is $15. That's still not too bad.
Kimberley thats a great deal nothing like that happens here ever. Ernie
