Uses for kitty litter

I wasn't sure which forum to put this in, so I chose this one, hope it's okay. I read these tips in the March 8, issue of Woman's World, in case anyone would like to get the magazine. Here are the uses:

1. Deodorize overnight ~ To deodorize a confined space, such as the trunk of your car, fill a bowl with kitty litter and place it inside overnight.

2. Keep your home warm ~ Got a draft coming in under a door? Fill an old, clean tube sock with kitty litter, then place it along the bottom of the door to keep cold air out of your house.

3. Cleaner garage ~ To clean up spilled oil on your garage floor, sprinkle kitty litter over it; let it stand overnight. The litter will soak up the oil, so the next day all you have to do is sweep it up! ( I think most people have heard of this one )

4. No more odors ~ Keep 1/8" of kitty litter at the bottom of your garbage cans (change it occasionally) to absorb the moisture that causes smells.

5. Keep that bouquet forever ~ Want to preserve fresh flowers? Fill a large plastic bag about 1/4 full with clean kitty litter. Spread flowers insie the bag on top of the litter; seal or tie closed. Let stand until flowers are dried, 1-2 weeks. Litter absorbs moisture, so the flowers will dry out quickly!

6. Instant dehumidifier ~ Does the air in your basement feel dmp? Keep coffee can filled halfway with litter in a corner to absorb moisture in the air and prevent mold and mildew!

Living in Louisiana, we have 100% humidity almost all year, and mold and mildew are always a problem, so I am going to try this at our camp. I've been using Damp Rid, which works beautifully, but I seem to be allergic to it, mainly when I come into contact with it directly, or with the dust from it, so this might be a good substitute for us to try. I'm going to try it in the bottom of the garbage can, too. Makes sense, when you think about it, huh? They didn't say to use one specific type, but I noticed in the picture at the top of the column, they have a jug of the kind with the Crystals in it, and there's is Tidy Cat, but I would think you could use any litter? I use Fresh-Step in Grayse's box, and it works really well, so I'm going to try it first, since I have some on hand, and I'm going to see if it works.
Here's a thought, not sure if it would work or not, but don't see why it wouldn't: put some of the litter in the bottom of the garbage can, spritz it with the alcohol and essential oil deodorizer recipe I posted in the Healthy Living forum.....which is basically 4 oz. of Vodka or any clear liquor, and 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil, mix until well blended....and maybe this will even work for adding some fragrance, rather than any smell of kitty litter that might come through? What y'all think? I'm going to try it and see what happens. Doesn't hurt to try ;~)
Let us know if you try any of these, or come-up with your own, so we can know what works and doesn't....have fun experimenting!

We have a very old house... the closets in the living room are built into the walls, and were damp. I read somewhere years ago to use a bowl of Kitty Litter to draw out the moisture, and I"ve had a bowl of kitty litter in them ever since. :-) It works great!

Melissa_Ohio...that's good to know that the kitty litter works good in the house, too. I'll be trying it.
I'm going right now to put the litter in the bottom of the trash can. I've been busy with other things, and just completely forgot to do it the other day.
