Contest to be!! Spring is Here, Yahoo!!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Here are some Freesia from last year. The ones in the ground bloom sooner than the ones I have in hanging baskets for some reason.

I hate to say this, but white callas are like weeds in my garden. I am forever digging them up. I will say a mature clump of them is absolutley stunning.

I do not think I have ever seen a variegated nasturtium before Clare!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Kell, They are Martha Stewart's packaged seeds that I happen to find at K-Mart. Last year, they were yellow, but this year, they must have crossed with some other one because they are orange!

Clare, I am drooling, I LOVE your variegated nasturtiums, they are so beautiful and healthy. What is your secret for growing them? I've tried a million time, all total failures. In fact, I'm not the only one, the nurseries quite carrying them too. Maybe I should try from seeds, ya think? But, I bet it's a zone thing...oh, and I'd settle for plain ole green. We use them in salads, for the 15 minutes we had them...

Sherry, I think you will have a much better chance at growing them from seed. They don't like to be transplanted much from my experience. They also don't like to be fertilized. The variegated ones (alaska mix) I have never had much luck with them they just remained small unlike Clare's Big beauties.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Beautiful nasturtiums. I've never seen them before either. Great pictures Clare. I don't know how you do it all.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Thanks so much Kin!!! Do you think it's too late to start seeds??? You know, I've never grown anything from seeds, with exception of sweet peas and now brugs. And, since my brugs from seeds are so much happier than my rootings/cuttings have been that I'm going to try nasturtiums too, assuming I can find seeds. They are annuals, huh???

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Brugie, It is one of the original 2 that you sent me. Whatever it is-it is a blooming fool right now. The other was v.peach which just now has its first buds although the plant is 6 ft tall. Kell, that t. Sunset is gorgeous. I do not really care what mine is. It is happy and blooming. It is not particularly odiferous is that is a clue.

Love the vareigated nasties. I think I got my seeds at Target. Sherry, once you get them started, you will have them forever lol. Do not feed nasties. You will get no blooms. Mine thrive in the most neglected bits of the garden.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Regardless Frogs, a blooming brug is a blooming brug! LOL. Hard not to love. I wonder if you have the 2 mixed up. This could ber V. Peach. The corolla is a bit more puffed than I recall V. Peach being. My V. Peach was much darker but it was summer when it bloomed.

So tell us from your perfect place to live, San Diego!!! Be still my heart. Do you have a big drop in temp in winter? Do your brugs bloom lighter in winter or is there enough heat to grow them dark all year round?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Spring for us usually begins in April - as far as trees flowering, early bulbs blooming. This year is very unusual however. I already have bulbs coming up (crocus, tulips & daffodils) and some of my perennials that die back are showing signs of life. We've been having warm days in the mid to upper 50's but very cold nights (last week lows in the 20's - but this coming week lows in the low 30's expected). We have had very little rainfall and need it badly. Supposebly we are going to get some "showers" in the next 4 days, but it doesn't look like much. They are expecting us to fall into a drought here this summer (*sigh*).

Guess what I'm saying is that usually you could expect pics from me for early spring flowers in April, but this year it may be March. But who knows - it is very early, and the weather could turn (it has many times before) and slow it down to what would be normal.

I think for alot of people in zones 5b to 6 (that is me), late March to April is when we start to see early spring flowers. I think we could all "save" our spring pics and the contest be started at the end of April or early May. Not sure about those up in Alaska or Canada though.

Like cocktail hour, it sorta seems like it's 'always' spring some place, huh???

I have a pkt of varigated Nasties to plant, soon as it warms up

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Oh Kell, what a beautiful picture!!! I am so ready for spring and summer here to see some (anything) blooms! My winter has been so busy and pretty miserable. I've been away from DG for so long and today is the first day that I haven't been taking care of my mother. I feel like a free woman....and so ready for springtime! Normally our last frost date is April 15th! I have some hyacinths poking their little heads up!

MelissaOhia....you have so gorgeous pics!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Doris, about how long will it be before you plant them, and, do you plant them in the ground?? I bet the variegated ones prefer a cooler climate like your zone 6a...I'm really looking forward to planting some!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I do not see the post from Melissa Ohio.......?????

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Sherry, I'll check to see if I have some Nasturtium seeds that I can send you. Every year, they are beautiful in spring, and then by summer, they are covered in aphids. If you hose off the aphids with a spray of water, the nasturtiums end up looking beat up so I usually pull them all up in summer. The few seeds that I get, I usually leave where they are and they come back the following spring. I do like the variegated ones because, as GardenGuyKin said, they remain small. When I was growing the regular Nasturtiums they took over everything and eventually had to go. The regular kind got aphids really bad too. Here is some from last year:

I am a new member making the rounds to various forums. Please post the rules etc for your new photo contest. My brugs are not blooming until mid June. I am in north Florida.

Clare, my hubby's mom, 92, is here and she tells me that it's a waste of time to plant nasturtiums here because the soil is too rich. She says she tried them for years with zero luck and she can grow anything, orchids and African violets now because she can care for them inside, but she and my hubby have a small tomato garden which is being moved to tomato success kits this year because she cannot watch them grow in the regular garden. And, if you can't watch them grow, half the fun is gone, huh?? Your nasturtiums are oh so pretty and healthy, I'm green with envy!!!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Absolutely!! Blooming brugs are the best. Since I am never going to breed the things, pretty will do me just fine. Oh yeah. This is the plant that has the weird growth at the bottom so perhaps it is just a mutant all the way around. I love it anyway.

The winter blooms are MUCH lighter. I did not post any when butterfly bloomed cause I did not think anyone would believe it was her lol. CG seemed to be least affected by the cold. My favorite nursery has a monster that I have to visit from time to time. (Oh yeah, I buy plants too.) Interestingly, I had no whites bloom in winter. Perhaps next year whe the plants are older. I need to learn the best time to cut them back now that most of the plants that I want in the ground are established.

The bug wars have begun. Time to stock up on bt and sevin. Sigh. With all of the frogs I have around, you would think they could take care of that!

Here is a cute little spring allium. It is an invasive plant but mine is bounded by cement above and a drain pipe below so they have only this little spot to grow in.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

That allium is really pretty.

Sherry, your mother-in-law is definitely right. They seem to thrive in poor soil and little water. In fact, they grow by the freeway in Santa Barbara and Montecito and self-seed every year and have no care or water at all. Thanks for the nice complement:-)

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Yes, Clare, she also mentioned the water, said it rained all the time when they didn't need it. Oh, well, I'll just take a trip to CA and enjoy them there!!!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Sherry, I have grown them in hanging pots. Just get the cheapest potting soil that you can find and a 97 cent pot from wally world and you will be all set. Just take the plate off of the bottom so the water will run through. I wish I could send you some. I planted climbers one year and have had them ever since. Time to yank them out again. The poor clivias are nowhere to be seen in the sea of nasties. See all the orange and yellow blossoms lol?!

Here's a visitor this am during a break in a shower. I think it's a Gulf Fritillary but not sure.
Also can someone ID the plant he's on (not the spurred snapdragon).

What a beautiful walk way frogs, I'd be spending lots of time there, so pretty! I love your photo too Jan, yours are pretty and healthy too - I love the tomato containers...you two have similar growing zones and real green thumbs!!!

I do not have flowers kell but this is my first sign of spring, just took this ten mins ago.

Well, Spring hasn't sprung yet here either! All my flowers are still hiding under a blanket of snow! Hopefully soon, I'll have some Springtime pictures to share, but in the meantime, I loved seeing everyone's beautiful Spring blooms! They definitely brought a big smile to my face!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Great picture, Kareoke!

Shirley, I hope that snow melts soon for ya!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Clare, the blanket of snow is beginning to receed, but has left mud in it place. Time to dig out the boots!
