Ok,its now almost spring,I'm cracking my greenhouse doors open, about an inch, letting the temperatures at night fall down to the middle to low 40's,trying to harden off my tropicals, because in a about the second week in April there going outside, last year they went out April 1st,and had to cover them a few times, because I plant them into the ground and out of there pots.
I compost the raised beds there going to be planted in all winter, and the ground temps are running close to the 50* mark.
Anyone else do anything close that resembles this method in aclmatting there plants for preparing them for outside?
Chele the warm weather is coming and the snow will soon be a thing of the past!!!

I know! you could offer free rides on the Bobcat. My husband and son would be over in a sec. They are dying to try out these Ohio things! They would pay real money to be able to do your yard with a Bobcat. No shovelling or raking for them, though!

p.s. I'll send my cleaning lady over to your house the day before the RU. Don't get nasty....It'll all work out! lol

We are now trying to get an apt name for Michele's GH. I'm going to paint a sign for her on an old slate shingle. We know It will be Lavender backround with green or white lettering. We need all types of suggestions for names. I'm trying to tap into the creative genius here at DG. Any Suggestions???? Lou

OMG! You guys are funny. LOL The Happy Place one makes me laugh. I make people laugh all the time by telling the kids to "find a happy place".

Hubby is being no help at all! I think 'Rootbound' is kind of funny too. I'm great at this kind of thing for other people but not for me. Just when I bad mouth hubby, he pops his head in the door and says "Hide and Seed". LOL Me?? Hide?? From who??

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I think "Hide and Seed" is perfect and you can tell your hubby I said so.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Tell him did something right? Tell him even the word perfect? Whatsa matter with you? :)

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

I guess I have been single too long.....mea culpa. LOL

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Great thread, yes I can remember that much energy. I like "Hide and Seed" myself. My new business is "Ms Sow n Sew", gardens and curtains.
You and your life are an "get off your tuff" inspiration to me.
The best parenting is by example and you are doing a good job of that.
How did your neighbor do, I don't think you said. That is so sad.
Many blessings,
Sidney

How about
'Invernadero de la mujer fértil' ?

'Greenhouse of the fertile woman'

LOL NoH20! Hubby and I have a great arrangement. He is not an idea man but he is a great builder/creator and I am great for coming up with ideas and not much engineering sense. I come up with the ideas and he follows through with both of us tweaking as he goes. We work well together. I do give him a lot of grief but he's a good guy. He'll be at the round up with the kids and me.

Sidney, I love the Ms Sow and Sew! it is such a neat play on words.
I have a great time with my kids but am often kind of overwhelmed by the workload. I am one of those people that needs to stay busy. Just sitting drives me nuts. I wish I had the same enthusiasm for cleaning my house and doing laundry as I do for building beds, starting seeds and planting stuff. LOL I always tell people my house is clean in the winter and my yard looks nice in the summer. :) Even though I am always home after noon, I still feel like I do not spend enough time with the kids. What I would give for someone to enertain them so I could do my jobs more quickly.

It's hard to be a parent. There are good days when you feel like super woman, able to do anything and there are days when you wonder why the powers that be would allow you to be responsible for the lives of others and you just feel like you are doing a really bad job of things. I'm thankful every day for my little ones even when I want to pop their little heads off! :)

Ummm Ric, you go somewhere and behave yourself!!! LOL

You might try getting that neighbor gardening, glad things are better.

Oh Sidney, if I thought it were possible, I would! She is a 'designer', not a person that sweats or labors. LOL Now that you have seen my replies, I will remove them. :)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Okay, so that's time for her to discover designing with flowers.
Here are 3 baskets I "designed".
There are close-ups near the bottom Of Coleuus Addicts 3.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey, it's my thread, hijack away. LOL

She does buy plants and pick out plants and tell her hubby where she wants them. Does that count?? She did actually help with the veggie garden last year so I have to be nice. :)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh to have a "Honey-do" man. Mine is mentally and phisically disabled and a sweet heart, but cant do a thing.
Maybe she will be alright, life teaches in strange ways.
Sidney

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Sidney, know that, says so much about you. Do you have family close by to help out with the big stuff? My husband has rheumatoid and degenerative arthritis and sometimes there are things he can't help with either. He does help with the cooking, cleaning and laundry. Life always has trade offs. :)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

FF does cook and help with the dogs, but is scheziphrenic, so I never know what's real or not. lol
I am happy to have him here.
I ruined his liife by marrying him 38 years ago.lol
We divorced 34 years ago, and in June of 2001 he came here to keep-up with my house while I was away working at my invitation.
We have a son that turned 37 yesterday and have most always been friends.
Now my xMIL and FIL both just think I'm great for taking care of him. He also helps with $, so we can survive.
Sidney

Goshen, OH(Zone 6a)

now that we are talking hubby, mine is a teddybear in my mind but most of the time he is a grumpy old man with no sense of humor and so I play on that alot I drive him crazy with my very strange sense of humor. We have been married for 35 years so I guess I will keep him around for the rest of my days. Not to say that sometimes I just wish he would away for awhile and leave me with my own mind what little is left. He is retired now for 7 years and when he quit so did I so we are together 24/7, I am going to someday write a book on how to survive the first year of retirment and not kill each other. We had a Brady bunch family his 3 kids my 2 and then we had our kid, so life has been a roller coaster but I would not have changed a thing.
He also does all my heavy things that I can't do (I like someone so does manual labor).

JoAnn

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Thankdirt---I dread retiring and spending 24/7 with myDH! I love him dearly, but I need my space. I keep telling him he needs a hobby and he says he works so much that he doesn't want a hobby. When he's home he wants me with him , resting, watch TV, Etc. How do you survive the first year of retirement? We are the same age and will retire at the same time. He is a great help with big and small jobs around the house, and is pretty handy. But, I think you can only do so much around a house. Married 38 years, so I'm not going anywhere and hopefully , neither is he. LOL Lou

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Dis - get him a barn to go to!!!! Mine has a lazy boy chair and tv in his barn, plus a frig and two phones. Home away from home. Even has a woodstove so he can be there in the winter too!! He spends hours moving his junk around.

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Great Idea-but we live in town on a small lot-no room for a barn. Maybe we will hit the lottery and He can by a place in the country to go to to piddle around. LOL. Lou

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

LOL!
Retire for a 24/7!

We work AND garden together 24/7.
Have for 20+ years now.
We're both creative idea people. (You learn to pick your battles)

She's basically hardscape /planting and I'm basically carpenter (though she's far from being a simple apprentice), seed and bulb acquisitions, sowing and post planting care.
We overlap a bit though on all of the above.

We combine on design and buying plants.

Our secret.................no sharp objects or firearms allowed in the garden :-)

Seriously though......
If it ain't fun it ain't gardening......It's landscaping!

That sounds great Henry, so terrific you can share so many intrest. It is a blessing to be able to have this rapoire and I'm sure ya'll know that.

As Badseed can tell you from first hand .
My partner also has the temperament of a Saint.
(Actually she's much like 'chele's husband.)
Which is a good thing as my personality, like 'cheles,
tends toward devilish! lol!

Michelle!!!! I just saw this thread for the first time tonight :) I am so very happy for you! A little reward for a ton of hard work is a wonderful thing. I love seeing good things come to those who will really appreciate them :) It's great to get to share in this exciting new toy! Really, really neat :) Great job!!!

Hugs :)

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Michelle, I too saw this thread for the first time. I can't believe how much you accomplsh with all your family tokeep track of. Great job you are doing. Know you will love your gh. I waited 30 years before i got one. Then after my husband died 11 years ago. I sold the house in the middle of the orchard and moved here where there was nothing. My plan included a small 10 x 14 gh attached to the garage and it is stuffed this time of year. i love it . glad your shelving will work for this year. Congratulations on a job very well done. DonnaS

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi Huga and Donna!

Thank you so much for your compliments, encouragement and well wishes! I truly am having a lot of fun with my new toy and not minding the extra work at all!

I have 5-6 plug trays full of seeds started and many are up. Yay! I also potted up a bunch of bare root plants, a couple dozen caladiums, a couple of lotus, etc. I also have several flats of sun coleus and sweet potato vines and such, hoping they root well. I dragged all my tropicals out there a couple of days ago and will get my canna potted up next. I will probably be wishing I had bought a larger one by the time all my co-op plants arrive! LOL One neat thing about this greenhouse, is that you can add on four foot sections until it reaches 24 feet long!

I lucked out being able to use the wire shelving and aluminum supports! They definately are flimsy and won't be permanent but allowed me to set up and get going immediately. I'll have to do some reconfiguring, some type of flooring and build new shelves but I assume I will have all the plants out of there by May as the weather warms up and the greenhouse stays too warm. That will give me time to figure out exactly what I want to do and worry about permanent shelving. I have definately felt very blessed lately. By working the last couple of years, we have straightened out our finances, dumped all but on of our credit cards and secured new vehicles. Poor hubby had to wait ten years for his. The kids are all healthy and happy and NOTHING is better than that! Things have been really hectic here and there is SO much that needs done. I have taken a leave from Target and am going to spend more time at home and hopefully get to a lot of things around the house and out in the yard and gardens.

Donna, I cannot imagine the courage and strength it took for you to venture out on your own and start from scratch! I am always amazed by your photos, variety of plants and words of wisdom!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Ok Michele, I think we need some updated photos of the GH with plants in it. I'm dying to see what you have in there. lol

Donna

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Your post always make me smile Badseed.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Donna! I *might* have snapped a few pics yesterday. I am headed out with chainsaw in hand, to try to get rid of the logs and scrap lumber in front of it. Gotta run while Maddie naps. I'll try to post some pics in a bit. :)

Thank you Sidney. Sometimes my fingers get ahead of my brain and novels escape. Umm, whoops!
