Search Function Suggestion

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

I don't know if this has been asked for or discussed before.

I really wish there was some way to exclude things from searches in the plant files.

I often search or browse for plants by Genus. However, say I want to look up a Nightshade; but, can't remember the name. I know it is in the Solanum Genus and know I don't want to look at a million potato and tomato cultivars. It would be nice to have way to keep them from coming up.

I doubt there is an easy answer to this, it is just something I find annoying.

It would also be neat to be able to use use any genus as criteria for an advanced search, instead of being stuck with 19 pre-determined categories.

I've made some similar suggestions to Dave recently (and have the bruised shins to prove it - just kidding, although I'm sure he'd like to kick me good a time or two ;o) I agree that being able to limit one's search by genus, species, cultivar or common name would be nice, as would bringing back some boolean searching criteria (exclude, include all or any, etc.)

If there is another genus large enough to be given its own cultivar browse or advanced search, please let us know. (The categories aren't pre-determined or finite. Those you see simply represent the genera that are the largest in terms of entries AND have their own specific checkboxes, which makes it necessary to give users a separate advanced search ability in order to search by their unique criteria.)

You can search for a genus, but you have to start by finding one member of the genus and opening its entry. If you then click on the name of the genus in that entry, you get all the other members of the same genus, without any extras.
It is a bit cumbersome and it would be nice to be able to easily search on a genus alone.

I have just tried the search function and found that we cannot search by selecting which forum we want to search from. Is this the new way we are doing it or is this only temporary? Thank you.

Been meaning to ask what's the deal with putting the entered words in quotes, and are they single or double?
