: Fw: About using dryer sheets

A friend of mine sent this to me this evening.

"I had a wonderful morning, the heating unit went out of my dryer! Why
does everything seem to fall apart this time of year!!???!!! We called the
guy here in town that fixes things like that and he came over while I was
working over at the folks. One new $50. heating unit and a $40. house call
later, I now have a dryer that works plus a very good hint from the
man that fixed it! The repairman went into the dryer and pulled out the
lint filter. It was clean. We always clean the lint from the filter after
every load of clothes. He told me that he wanted to show him something. He
took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. Now, this thing
is like a mesh. WELL.......the hot water just laid on top of the mesh!!! It
didn't go through it at all!!! The dryer sheets cause a film over that
mesh and that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but
it's there. He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long
time (and to keep your
fuel bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy
water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He
said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! Learn
something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that
and I doubt you did either. So, thought I'd share!"

Wow! I've been losing dryers once every two years lately and now I know why. I put several sheets in every time I dry because I LOVE the way they make my house smell. Sometimes I throw a dry towel in the washer to wet it and then throw it in the dryer with 3 or 4 sheets just to freshen the house. I rescue small dogs and most of them can't be around air fresheners or potpourri (SP) because of allergies. I don't like to burn candles because I sometimes forget them so this has been my only way of freshening the house. Should I tell my husband what I've done? Maybe I'll just change my habit and leave it at that. Thank you so much for enlightening me!

Herbswife, try putting a square of fabric softener sheet inside your heat vent grill. You can also poke a hole through one and hang it on a hanger in your closet - makes your whole closet smell great.

I don't like to use fabric softener or dryer sheets on my towels (they are more absorbant without it), but I do like them used with some of our clothes.

I do hang them on my hangers with my clothes but I never thought of hanging them on my heat vent. Great idea, thank you! I didn't know the dryer sheets made towels less absorbant. I knew liquid softener was bad for them but I didn't know why. Now I do. Thanks!!

I'm with GW on the towels...and kitchen towel too...looses some of their absorbancy. Jo

I got that message from someone else. I had to wash off the screen anyhow because my son is always washing his chapsticks in his pants pockets and they get into the dryer and they gum up the screen. you have to scrub them with hot water and soap and a brush to get the baked on goo out.
