SC Mtns. - Pretty Place and Caesar's Head

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Someone mentioned in a thread that they didn't think SC had mtns. They do indeed have mountains in the extreme northwest portion of the state known as the "upstate."
Here is a view from Caesar's Head State Park. The rock the people are standing on looks like a head from directly below in SC.

This is the Symmes Chapel. It is part of a YMCA Camp named Camp Greenville. It sits right on the NC/SC line. The chapel is carved out of a solid rock face. A lot of weddings take place here. We call it "Pretty Place."

I have posted this before. It is Whitewater Falls and is the highest falls in the east - nearly 3 times as high as Niagara. The Upper Falls are in NC, the Lower Falls are in SC. Both states claim they own the whole thing and it is a long-running, but tongue-in-cheek argument.

Lovely places. Thanks, Woodspirit. Jo

It's nice to see other parts of the country through these photos.
Very nice, thank-you,

North Carolina has to win, since it holds the upper falls! LOL

Gorgeous pics, woodspirit! It's always so nice to see parts of *ANY* state that are unexpected from the pictures we get in our heads about how they must look.

Like Arizona, for example. When I first moved there from my home state of Missouri, all of my family (including me) thought Phoenix was in a sort of Sahara Desert. It was fun to describe all the colors of green that this desert possessed, and how each plant had its own defined space, and then the bright color of the wildflowers and blooming cactus when the rains came... :)

P.S. Silly typos happen when I get wrapped up in talking about one of my favorite states. *grin*

No place in the "Upstate" can beat Chimney Rock in NC....

Just my person opinion, after having lived in SC for two years, and going to the upstate parks there... Chimney Rock beats 'em all. So beautiful!

Great pics! Especially since some of those are my old stomping grounds, Folks.

I grew up just down the mtn from Pretty Place. Spent many a Sunday going to services at Pretty Place. Lot of memories in that place, from the open-airyness (and bundling up on the cooler mornings) to the comaraderie of the people, to the talks given by various people (one who just may have been a majoy influence on my and my story-telling habit!).

A few years back, on the way to the DG Tenn Roundup, I took my DD there to see a piece of my past. Woodspirit, that place will never change, will it!

Picture of the entrance. (I have a snap shot of me about same age as DD taken in the doorway years ago.)

Vic, I grew up in Spartanburg and after some years returned to Greenville to serve a church. We enjoyed a day trip to the mountains, the falls at Pisgah, and the Adubon community near Caesar's Head. This is beautiful country anytime of the year.
AngelSong, "No place in the "Upstate" can beat Chimney Rock in NC." I agree as well. We use to picnic there and play on the huge bolders near/in the water as it came rushing down stream. I remember the tourist places along the way with Cheneille bedspreads fluttering in the wind from bouquets of flowers, to Peacocks, designed on them. Oh and don't forget the whellerygigs turning in the wind. Thanks for the memories!

Funny story about the Broad river in Chimney Rock. When settlers began to move east from the coast, they named a large river the Broad. Well, later on they came across another river and someone named it the Broad too. I think that one is around Charlotte. Stupidly, when they came upon the river in Chimney Rock, they named it the Broad, too. So when they came to the rivers in Transylvania County, they decided that because that river flows northwest to Asheville and then west into the Little Tennessee and eventually into the Mississippi and out the Gulf of Mexico, they named it the French Broad because it went through French territory.
The French Broad has a North, West, Middle, and East Fork which are all excellent trout streams. The Davidson River flowing out of Pisgah National Forest and Little River in the Southeast part of the county all join the French Broad which is quite large going through Asheville, but not deep. It is odd for a river to run north but it does for aways.
I love to go trout fishing. How many of you have I told about my NC trout-fishing record?

I am the no mountain in SC culprit, and obviously wrong. Thus they might have some good info for you on SC PBS show, "Making it grow". One of my favorites.
I was careless when I posted that, but glad I did so you could show us this wonderful Pretty Place.

The Continental Divide runs north to south along the ridges near Flat Rock(sign posted on I 26) down to Caesar's Head. Water on the eastside of the divide flows to the Atlantic. Water on the western side flows into streams which make their way to the Mississippi then on to the Gulf.
The Continental Divide in the Americas is the line that divides the flow of water between the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. Rain or snow that drains on the east side of the Continental Divide flows toward the Atlantic Ocean while precipitation on the west side drains and flows toward the Pacific Ocean. (However, some rivers empty into the desert and don't end up in the oceans.)

Don't I cross the Continental Divide on I-10 in New Mexico? Jo

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Yep! You sure do, RR. That is definitely the Cont Divide. This one referenced to more known as the Eastern Continental Divide.

Dang! You're good!

Crossville, TN

YIPEE! I got something right for a change...LOL Jo

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

LOL, yes there are 2 continental divides. The Toxaway River, where I live, goes down into SC and eventually into the Savannah River and out into the Atlantic. But very close-by, the French Broad flows north to Asheville, then west into the Little Tennessee, then the Mississippi and eventually into the Gulf of Mexico. The continental divide here is within 5 miles of my house but runs the whole length of the east.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Along the Blue Ridge Mountains, yes?

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

Beautiful pictures Woodspirit1, not all that far from here. I love the east coast mountains I call home.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

sugarweed, yes. I live close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our little county has 250 major waterfalls but over 1,000 altogether. I guess you can tell it's kinda rainy here, lol. Some of their names are funny: Tumblin' Fun Falls, Slippery Witch Falls, Bear Wallow Falls, Still House Falls, Boxcar Falls, Bird Rock Falls, Laughing Falls, Buttermilk Falls, Silver Slip, and one called Drift Falls, but commonly known as Bust-Your-Butt-Falls, which is a steep angle to the pool below and people slide on it. Very dangerous there.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Ahh the memories of youth, and slides like that. Really makes us smile. I love NC's, SC's mountains and will get a place in them if I win the lottery.
