Pop Ups?

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

I have gotten several "pop-ups" while on DG today... is this a new feature? I hope not - it is one of the most annoying things about the internet. An interruption when you are busy doing something else. Please say it ain't so! Hoping my computer has been hacked & not a new DG feature...

They're not from our site, but you may have "picked up" some nasties on your computer. If you don't have spyware and anti-virus software, you should probably go to a site that offers a free diagnostic and then check the Computer Talk forum for recommendations on what to consider buying and installing.

Also, I've found using Mozilla as my browser (rather than Internet Explorer) has dramatically reduced the incident of popups.

I use Netscape, and have never seen any on DG - plenty on other sites, tho'.

Good luck, Julie!

Although I have Mozilla, most of the time I use Internet Explorer and I have never had a pop-up on DG...ever.

That's right - no popups on DG. I hate 'em and I don't care how much they pay, I'm not willing to put them on the site.

You definitely have a virus (or spyware, whatever) on your puter, Julie.

Whew! I'm so glad that you feel that way about pop-ups and are being firm about it, Dave. Thanks.

Julie, I hope you're making out ok with your 'puter!

Thanks Dave for making a stand like this for your site. I absolutely hate pop-ups too.

I switched to Netscape Mozilla two years ago because of those annoying Orbitz popups. You shouldn't have to buy special software to prevent them. I also avoid sites where 'media' plug-ins are required. I like my information basic and FAST. Seems that MS is only just now getting the point. I also like the fact that one can just right-click with Mozilla and zap some of those annoying ad servers too. My 'Block Images from this Site' Manager in Mozilla is HUGE!

If you have Windows 2000 or XP there is a "feature" included which allows pop-up's to appear on your PC even if you're not connected to the Internet. See this link for instructions on how to disable it, for perhaps that will help: http://davesgarden.com/journal/j/viewentry/29784/

I agree with these folks about Mozilla browsers - they rock. I use Firefox 1.0 and love how there's even extensions (like plug-in's) available to block Macromedia Flash ads. Their e-mail client Thunderbird is top-notch, too. http://mozilla.org

We have the spyware & virus programs, & I will run them again as a precaution. I am SO relieved that this will not happen again - there are few things I dislike more than to be interrupted by telemarketers & aggressive sales people, & pop-ups are in the same league. If I want something, I will look for it. If they harrangue me, I am more likely to walk away in disgust & AVOID doing business with them. I think many people feel the same way, but these businesses just don't GET IT. Thank you again for your commitment to keeping DG a website with our best interests at heart! I truly appreciate this safe place to commune with gardening afficionados from all over the world...
